First hike of day. We got started up the trail to Stevens Lakes. The uphill began right away, and was fairly steep. The trail was in mostly good condition. We passed an adit and some tracks, remnants of mining in the Silver Valley. I liked the section of trail that crossed a large talus slope. There was also a neat waterfall just off the left side of the trail. It’s a short, steep descent to go check out the base of the falls, but worth the effort.

Lower Stevens Lake was very pretty. We took in the sights then traveled down the west side of the lake to some better views at the south end. We inadvertently stumbled upon the best trail up to the upper lake. Upper Stevens was also very pretty. Originally, heading up to Stevens Peak was an option for today, but after looking at the mountainside, we opted to skip it.

We took a less desirable route back down to the lower lake, then continued down the main trail back to the trailhead. Saw three other hikers. And in the parking lot, chatted with three New Zealanders who were bicycling across the US.

Both lakes had some great campsites along the shore. I can see why this one is a fairly popular hike.

Next up was the hike to both Lower and Upper Stevens Lakes. The trailhead requires only about a mile of dirt-road driving, but a high-clearance vehicle is recommended.

The hike begins with a steady climb right from the start, leading up to Lower Stevens Lake. Along the way, we paused at an old mining adit—mostly as a good excuse to catch our breath. From there, the trail continued across a talus slope, where Kelly made quick work of the rocks, and we detoured briefly to enjoy a small waterfall.

Lower Stevens Lake is yet another picture-perfect Idaho gem.

We traversed along the western shore to explore some interesting rock formations and a small beach on the south side of the lake.

From there, we climbed about 200 feet to reach Upper Stevens Lake. At first, we thought we were following a faint use trail, but later learned it was actually the main trail. Word of caution: do not follow our return track—it's a thin, obstructed, and much slower route.

At Upper Stevens Lake, I realized we were less than a quarter mile from the Montana state line—something I hadn’t known until that moment.

Another beautiful adventure in the Cabinet Mountains of Northern Idaho.

today's choice was a hike to stevens lakes and possibly stevens peak
the trailhead is not far off I90, near the town of mullan
we got going around 0800 going uphill mostly along willow creek
checked out a mine
one big switchback on a talus field
we spotted a waterfall and dropped down to get a closer look
arrived at lower stevens lake and explored along the shore
very scenic with several campsites
made our way to upper stevens lake
we realized going to stevens peak would be a full day commitment and since we wanted to do another hike in the area, opted not to
back downhill with a break at the lower lake
actually saw three hikers, then three cyclists at the trailhead
linda hadn't done this hike, so nice for all of us to see something new
