second hike of the day
sunday gulch was another recommendation from @azlot69
the trail began right behind the sylvan lake dam, so we hiked the lake shore loop too
an initial drop along a creek, with sets of handrails attached to the granite walls
fun to negotiate the descent
trail winds through an aspen, spruce and birch forest, then loops back
views of the needles on the return
the lakeshore trail is beautiful - no wonder sylvan lake is so popular
a fun and unique hike
we had planned to camp at horsethief lake
took the long way back that way, stopping in custer for coffee and browsing
decided to camp at the mount rushmore KOA instead - nice to take a shower after a day of hiking

I disagree with the hike description -- this hike is not better than the Harney Peak hike, but it's a good one. I did the loop clockwise, starting on the south side. It was a fun hike, especially at the waterfalls and streams on the north end. From either side of the loop, you hike down into the gulch and then back out. Not many people on the trail; I encountered maybe four other groups the entire time.

Nice temperatures under strong tree cover made this a nice day. Only a few others on the trails.
