Short hike through IH Wilderness with Kaila and Joey. Trailhead was crowded with lots of cars parked outside the lot, but we were fortunate enough to find parking. Hit the trail around 1pm, most people were already on the way out and threatening clouds were gathering overhead. We chose to loop through the old cascade crest area in order to increase solitude. Huckleberry bushes are in full fall color right now.

Spent an afternoon wandering through Indian Heaven Wilderness. Started out by hiking to Deep Lake and snorkeling for a bit. Then went over to the Old Cascade Crest trail network and did some off-trail navigation to look at some remote ponds and meadows. Along the way I came across a couple of use-trails that I didn't previously know existed.

Took refuge from the extreme heatwave in the many creeks, lakes, and ponds of Indian Heaven Wilderness. Started from Thomas Lake Trailhead around 3pm. My truck showed the temp was 98 degrees and there wasn't a cloud in the sky. Only 2 other cars in the parking lot.

Headed out to Elk Lake trail via the Old Cascade Crest trail system. Went swimming in a couple of lakes and then lounged around until sunset. Mosquitoes were annoying when sitting still at camp, but with bug spray and treated clothing they didn't actually bite. Most appeared very small and would only just have hatched.

On trail at 0500 the next morning. Made my way back south on the PCT to Eunice Lake, then headed west along the Old Cascade Crest again to shorten my return hike. Mosquitoes were worse on day #2 and much larger, probably a combination of lower temps and dropping in elevation, but they started to swarm when I was moving and were not fully deterred by bugspray when I stopped. Still had fun, but will probably wait a couple weeks for the hatch to die off before returning to hike anything at this elevation level.

Started from the west side of Indian Heaven Wilderness with Tim and did a giant loop. Clear skies with temps in the 50s- much different conditions than my trip just a couple of days ago. Felt really good to be able to hike in just a t-shirt, almost felt like summer again...

Meadows & Lakes of Indian Heaven are as scenic as ever. The ice has subsided a bit since my last hike- but the rain & cold weather returns this week and the area will soon be blanketed in snow.

Set out to do my first snow/winter overnight for the year in one of my all-time favorite areas- Indian Heaven Wilderness.

Beautiful sunny afternoon with temps in the mid 30s. Started from Thomas Lake Trailhead and made my way out to Blue Lake where I turned north onto the PCT. I had forgotten how tough it is to hike Indian Heaven after things start to freeze. There are so many lakes, ponds, streams, seeps, etc... so everything turns to ice once it gets cold and the whole area is essentially one big ice rink. Without microspikes or some type of traction device, it becomes an extreme test of ones balance and patience. Despite multiple close calls, I'm proud to say I only completely fell down once during my entire hike and am no worse for the wear.

At Eunice Lake I turned northeast and followed Lemei Lake Trail. I haven't been on this section of trail for years, but it brought back happy memories of hiking it with a group of friends during a particularly buggy summer afternoon a long time ago. Above 4700-4800 feet I hit some patches of snow that were a couple of inches deep, and provided a blissful relief from trying to navigate the black ice that coated most of the trail. I then turned left at the junction by Clear Lake and wound my way back southbound on the PCT and headed over the Elk Lake where I had intended to set up camp for the night.

I had a new freestanding tent that I selected specifically for winter/snow treks and was excited to set it up. I selected the very last campsite at the far end of Elk Lake that was fortunately snow free. I set up the tent without too much trouble, broke a hole in the ice over the lake to collect water, then heated up dinner before retreating to the comfort of my tent for the remainder of the evening as the temps held in the 20s.

I dozed off for a bit, but eventually awoke when the wind kicked up. It was strong enough that it was causing the ice that covered the lake to snap and crack quite loudly as it crashed into the shoreline. I laid awake for a while in the dark before finally deciding to pack it up and head out. I figured it wasn't worth a night of restless sleep and I had already accomplished everything I had set out to by testing out the new tent (which I am happy to say works great).

I followed the trail back by the light of my headlamp. Pausing in several meadows along the way to shut off my light and admire the star filled sky. For the fun of it, I opted to take one of the unmaintained former Cascade Crest Trail segments to cut between the PCT and Lake Umtux. It had several snow patches, but overall was very easy to follow by headlamp and was a nice way to mix things up. When I got back to the truck at 4000' the gauge read 27 degrees and I startled a mouse that was rummaging around in my center console.

We have had a couple of nice cold sunny weeks in the PNW and the winter snow that usually makes some of the more remote areas inaccessible this time of year has held off a bit longer than usual. I took advantage of the nice weather window to head up and explore an unmaintained trail through one of my favorite sections of the Indian Heaven Wilderness.

I started from the Thomas Lake Trailhead at 12:30. A bit later than I would have liked now that the sun sets so early, but I am lazy and couldn't bring myself to wake up any earlier. There was only 1 other car in the lot, but I quickly passed that hiker on their was out just a couple minutes up trail.

The trail was mostly snow free up to Naha Lake, although it was covered in small sheets of ice and most of the lakes were frozen over. Passed Naha Lake I turned north onto the abandoned Cascade Crest Trail and headed towards Acker Lake. The trail was easy enough to follow, but it was 95% covered in ice. I regretted not bringing my micro spikes and full winter boots. It looks like most of the Indian Heaven Plateau above 4700' feet has only received 6" of snow at the most, but there are so many lakes, ponds, streams, and springs that the whole area is covered in very slick ice that made for very slow going.

At the Cascade Crest/Elk Lake trail I briefly considered heading west to check out Elk Lake, but I already knew I would be finishing after dark and decided to start heading back. The PCT was marginally faster than the Cascade Crest Trail as it had more snow and less ice. I made decent time to Blue Lake, 1 of only 2 lakes I would see all day that was not frozen over. I assume its large size helps retain heat longer. Lake Sahalee-Tyee was also mostly ice free, although the creek that drains the lake was icing over and starting to encroach on the lake shore.

As I crossed the plateau towards Naha Lake the sun set and it started to get a bit windy. Numerous streams and ponds cover this area and it was all frozen solid, making for very slow going. Finally past Naha Lake I started dropping in elevation and quickly returned to mostly snow/ice free trail. There seems to be a bit of a microclimate at the 4700' elevation level, although the trail below here was covered in needle ice, it was much easier to follow and super fast. I finished by flashlight about 30 minutes after dark, temperature on my truck was showing right around 40 degrees.

Beautiful hike through the Indian Heaven Wilderness past more lakes than I could possibly count. Greg, Virg, Kaila, and I departed Camas at around 9:30 and were on the trail by about 11:30. Had a couple of minor navigational issues on the way up, and stopped at Panther Creek Falls along the way. Also got to engage 4wd to cross a minor road washout which added to the adventure.

Weather was partly cloudy and in the 70s. We encountered maybe 4 groups of hikers during our entire time on the trail. There were more lakes than I could possibly remember, and it would be easy for anyone to head out here and find their own lake to enjoy, far from anyone else. There were quite a few mosquitoes, so we repeatedly soaked ourselves in deet and never really took a break. We were also motivated by the idea of hitting the brewery in Stevenson on the way back, so we kept a pretty quick pace through the entire hike.
