this triplog includes the tower trail from wednesday evening
we left sylvan lake early wednesday afternoon and drove to devil's tower, stopping for lunch in newcastle
i've wanted to see devil's tower since our black hills trip in 2019
drove up to visitor's center and hiked the tower loop, then checked into our koa cabin
the tower is a remarkable piece of geology
probably took 75 photos of it
mike and fletch have climbed it
the surrounding terrain is really nice, too
thursday morning sue and i returned to hike the red beds loop, which makes a wider circumference around the tower
nice trail and a different perspective
only saw a couple of people with the early start
apparently this is a big draw during the sturgis motorcycle rally, with long wait times for a parking spot mid day
wandered around the visitor center for awhile then hit the road, stopping for breakfast in sundance
it's a nice drive back toward custer

On our way to Glacier National Park from the Badlands we stopped off at Devils Tower in Wyoming. We did the short paved loop around the tower. Lots of good views and people. If you are in the area this is a must see, this is my second time here and it did not disappoint. Couple of rock climbers attempting the climb the south side while we were there, I watched from a safe ground elevation.

With the highs, for Black Hills, South Dakota topping out at 92 today, and dropping to a high of 74 tomorrow, I opted for hitting this area. The Black hills can wait until tomorrow. Since dogs are not allowed on 98.6784% of trails in National Monument and National Park areas, the pup and I took a nice scenic stroll through the parking lot. We where one of the first ones there, so there where not a lot of people around. Judging by the crowds at Custer State park that evening, Im guessing this place was going to be packed for this Labor Day.

Visit to Devils Tower National Monument.

Busy busy busy crazy busy. The line of cars to get to the parking lot was about 2 miles long! Not helped by the road construction going on in the area. This has been on my list for many years. Very exciting to have it come into view about a half hour out. Parking a joke.

There is a 1.4 mile loop around the tower. Views all around. Paved trail and not to crowded even with all the tourists in the area.

On to Theodore Roosevelt NP tomorrow.

As Americas first national monument, this geologic feature stands out.

Hike around Devils Tower. Each side is different but quite the same.

Climbing to the top of the tower is allowed with a permit obtained from the ranger station (in summer) or from self-service counter (other times of year).
