Late afternoon hike in Sedona. In fact, a little too late. Started from the Scheurman TH right across from the school around 4:30. Very small TH. Roadside parking for maybe 5 cars on the east side of the road. The old TH (on the west side of the road) is adjacent to the administration building, but has been closed off. The map of Sedona and of the trails in the area are located at this old TH.

The climb up Scheurman was nice. The sun was already far enough along that I was hiking in the shadows of the mountain. There was a couple of ok views as I climbed. It was only about 400 feet to the top and .6 miles to reach the turn off for the vista. The vista spur was an additional .3 miles and well worth it. Very nice views for very little effort. Great views of Sedona, but because of how Scheurman is situated there are limited views to the west. Took me a bit to recognize the Sedona airport. I saw the strip on top of the hill and I thought I was seeing a road or canal. I happened to catch a plane take off which made me realize my mistake.

I returned to the main trail and continued west. And continued. And continued. It really wasn’t that far. But it seemed that way because I kept expecting it to end. Scheurman Mountain is a bigger mountain than you’d think. And the trail covers all of it. The trail and views were actually kind of nice. Almost like a high plains feel. A vast expanse of grasslands, peppered with piñons. The trails ending is kind of odd. About 2.65 miles (this includes the first vista), the trail comes to another signed vista turn off. This is a short spur with views of Cathedral and Courthouse. There is also a view of a crazy house perched on top of a red rock cliff. Kind of garish. This signed Spur is odd because there is no map (all Sedona trails have mapped junctures, so I guess this is an indication that we have officially left Sedona) and even more odd, there was no sign indicating that the trail continued west. There was an obvious trail that continued down the slope, which I followed and in about .15 miles I came to the official end of the Scheurman Trail where it junctures with Lime Kiln Trail. By this time the sun was quickly approaching the horizon, so I cheated and gave my wife a call and asked for a pick up. I continued down the Kiln Trail and then road walked until my wife found me with the car.

Not a bad trail. Provides a nice goodbye look to Sedona. This would be a phenomenal trail to take if you are hiking into Sedona and never seen Sedona. Those initial views from the vistas would be a great introduction to Sedona. Weather was great, evening temperatures were perfect. Had the trail myself. I did see two deer as I was heading down the back slope.

The trailhead is near the high school in Sedona. 89A and Upper Red Rock Loop Rd. Starts on Scheurman Mt trail for about 50 yards then junctions on to Scorpion Trail. Lollypop loop end is called Pyramid Trail. We got a late start and paid for it....hot! I can't do 89* with very little shade anymore. I was hot, tired and had Judy barking at me for starting out so late (10 AM). Hiked with friends Rich and Sue plus wife Judy. Used USFS PDF map "Red Rock (Sedona Area) SW Trails".
