Great introduction to the Sierras. After picking up our permit at Lodgepole, we started up in the late afternoon and set up camp at Panther Gap ~3 miles up the trail (the views are hard to miss). There are two campsites there which don't have water, and a few campsites at Mehrten Meadow (another mile up the trail) which do have water. The views across the canyon and east to the high peaks were worth the added effort of packing extra water for camping, and we just stocked up on water on our way up and down the peak the next morning.

The final mile to the summit was unrelenting, but the conditions were perfect and afforded us plenty of time. Definitely doable as a day hike, but the campsite is worth some extra time.

That being said, we saw a bear at the campsite early in the morning! It didn't seem to have any interest in our food (or us), but it ran across the trail right next to one of our tents and lingered in the bushes downhill for a little bit. They're pretty strict about the bear canister requirement, so I'd expect this sort of uneventful bear encounter to be the norm. It's a good reminder to stay near your food whenever it's out of the canister though...

Alta Peak hike is a moderate/strenuous hike leaving from Wolverton parking lot. It is roughly 7 miles to the top. The hike starts with series of switchbacks passing through the sequoia forest. After 4 miles you get to the saddle and from there you will continue left towards the Alta Peak. After hiking mostly flat/little up for mile or so, you will start to hike up in steep switchbacks towards the saddle and peak. After passing the Tharps Rock, the switchbacks end and you will have to make your way going straight up for the summit. That part of the trail was covered in snow, but nothing our micro spikes couldn't handle. When we got to the summit it was just us and few curious marmots. Awesome views every direction, Mineral King valley, Great Western Divide and Emerald, Aster and Pear lakes.

Alta Peak is a must do for those looking for a challenging peak bag close to the main park. I started from the Wolverton trailhead and my GPS showed exactly 7 miles to the top. The trail signage said 6.7, so I imagine it's within that range. Most of the trail was covered in snow above 9,000ft when I hiked it on Memorial Day weekend, and the last quarter mile was completely buried. I still managed to reach the summit, forgot to sign the register though... Alta is an awesome hike with an incredible view of the Western Sierras!
