our second day in joshua tree
coffee and breakfast at camp, then we headed for the northwest corner of the park
@tibber and i hiked warren peak in april, and i really enjoyed it
john and i got started around 0815, heading up black canyon
at the split, we went left to do the panorama loop first
angela thought the hike would have better views this way, and i agree
uphill to a ridgeline and a short off trail to peak 5195
great views heading west along the ridgeline of coachella valley, san jacinto and san gorgonio
gradual downhill to the warren peak trail split
we hit the overlook first, then went up to the peak
john chatted with a hiker from virginia at the summit
we didn't stay long as it was windy and cool
dropped down, closed the loop and returned to the visitor center
found the same mexican restaurant that angela and i had lunch at in yucca valley
lucky for us it was taco tuesday :)
we drove over to indian cove and checked out the campground
hiked the little nature trail then took a break to digest our tacos
next up was fortynine palms oasis, which i had hiked with sue two years ago
nice trail, fun short hike with the palm grove as a destination
getting dark as we finished
returned to camp and read in the car for awhile
colder that night and quite a bit windier

Day two of our Joshua Tree NP trip.
Kelly took us to the far reaches of the park. Cool hikes.
Five tacos, beans and rice for lunch. Took a while to feel like hiking again.
Another fun day. :)

third day of our joshua tree trip
my only request for the trip was that i wanted to do this hike in the northwest corner of the park
it's a bit of a drive from cottonwood, but we got up there around 0915 or so
parked at the nature center and headed through the campground
the trail follows black rock canyon at an easy uphill grade
lots of flowers, including some very tall fiddleneck
interesting rock formations in the canyon
at about two miles, the trail splits - right to warren peak, left to panorama loop
we wanted to go to the peak first so continued west on good trail
there is a short steeper spur to warren peak
we took a break on the peak to enjoy the views and cell service
angela kindly waited for me at the spur intersection while i went up another peak just to the south
all off trail, and i probably would have just done the little overlook with her had i looked at the track we were following
extra credit
we returned to the trail split and followed the panorama loop
wide smooth trail at a moderate uphill grade
turning around we had great views of snow covered mountains to the west
angela felt this hike would be best done in the opposite direction we did
we ascended to a ridgeline, and i hit 5195 on a very short use trail
some switchbacks dropping of the ridge, then back to black canyon for the finish
great combo and probably the best hike i've done in the park
it was a little breezy but temps were comfortable and we had some cloud cover at times
thanks for humoring me on this one angela :)
we rolled into yucca valley for some mexican food afterwards, then enjoyed the drive back to cottonwood
nice sunset that evening as a bonus

After finishing off Warren Peak we took a right hand turn as we headed north in Black Rock Canyon. The Panorama Trail was also a wide sandy path from this direction. It seems a bit of a valley that you slowly make your way up in elevation. Once again there were some nice tree specimens here and there. A big beautiful, partially fallen, Joshua Tree was almost in the middle of the trail. Its trunk was huge. And when you went around the other side, you could shoot San Gorgonio through the branches so I took way too many pictures of that. When shooting the pictures, the background seemed blown out but fortunately, on the computer, the pictures turned out quite well.

We continued the gradual ascent keeping an eye on our surroundings including some flowers like Fiddleneck, Scale Bud and others. A little bit further was a small grove of Pinon Trees and from there, we were quite near the first saddle. Oh, I almost forgot to mention, the clouds had started putting on a show since Warren Peak so that made for an even more scenic hike. It was at the saddle that the overcast sky was trying to take over. It was pretty windy. The trail heads south and up a little further. We came to a peak, Kelly bagged it before she knew THAT was 5195. I told her HAZel had announced it. She bagged both of the little peaks up there and seemed to feel so much better

From here you head a little further east before the trail takes you somewhat steeply down, but does have nice switchbacks. I decided that this loop should be done clockwise as the views coming west down the valley are easier to enjoy rather than having to look back. However, there were still decent views to our north and west. The flora through here was very nice as well including some more great Joshua Tree specimens.

It was good to reach the desert floor. The area would narrow pretty significantly as well so we got to see some more of the Pinto Gneiss rockery that once again seemed a scrambled mess. There was some more flora including Poppies, Bajada Lupine, Spotted? Milkvetch, Hedgehog Cactus, Scale Bud and Fiddleneck as well as plants GL can't identify. You eventually exit the narrow part and hook up with Black Rock Canyon again for your journey out. There was still plenty to see, even with the overcast sky which kept the temps so nice but detracted from the color of the landscape.

We found a Mexican restaurant for dinner and had hoped to get a shower at Coyote Corner but you can't get them there anymore so we headed home after fueling up Tonto 3. It took us a little less than an hour to arrive back at our Cottonwood Springs campground. Our evening was topped off with an endless sunset; it just kept giving :y: . I took too many pictures but the colors were brilliant; just like our time here. And the nite sky threw some photo ops our way as well.

After hiking a loop at the Maze in the morning, we drove to Black Rock Campground to start the second hike of the day. We parked at Black Rock Nature Center and headed south to campsite #30 where the trail to Warren Peak and Panorama Loop begins. The campground has a bunch of Joshua Trees, but the geology in the early part of the trail was much different than the boulder piles at the Maze, with a lot more black rock...hence the name.

We hadn't seen anyone on the trail in the morning, but that wasn't the case this afternoon. It was a steady, gradual incline toward Panorama Loop, and we started counterclockwise to take the spur toward Warren Peak first. The final ascent up to the summit was a little steeper, but nothing too difficult aside from the windy conditions. It wasn't a particularly warm day to begin with, and the wind up at the summit was probably 30+ mph. There was a small tin with a summit register as a USGS benchmark at the top, and we had nice views of San Gorgonio and San Jacinto poking up above the haze. We briefly had the peak to ourselves before we started back down to get out of the wind.

On the way back to the loop, we took a short spur trail to an overlook below and a little south of Warren Peak. We were doing well time-wise, so we hiked the full Panorama Loop, continuing counterclockwise and passing through some nice forests of large Joshua trees. The wind was brutal again up near the high points along the southern part of Panorama. The trail passes just south of Peak 5195, and I took a quick detour up to the top on a short social trail. Nice views, but nothing of particular interest up there, just the windiest conditions of the day, which felt pretty cold on an afternoon that topped out in the mid-50s. It's almost a hundred feet higher than than Warren (5,103') but Peak 5195 doesn't have a benchmark or register.

[ youtube video ] (mostly just wind noise for audio on this one :))

Things calmed down a bit after we dropped down from 5195 and lost a few hundred feet of elevation on the north section of Panorama, and we passed through more Joshua trees and some nice rock formations as we finished off the loop. The hike back to the campground was quick and easy, with a slight downhill most of the way. This was a new hike for both of us, and it ended up being a very enjoyable loop with two peaks, and it wasn't ridiculously crowded by typical national park standards.
