I have been eyeing Boundary Peak for a while, and this one turned out to be a FANTASTIC hike! I have now done 11 state highpointers, and this one is my favorite.

We started and ended the hike at the Trail Canyon Trailhead. To get there I drove in on Chiatovich Road, off of Nevada Highway 264 about 12 miles or so north of Dyer, Nevada. The road is unpaved, and it is about 14 miles off of Highway 264 to get to the TH. During that stretch you gain about 3,800 feet in elevation, although the ascent is fairly gradual so it didn't seem like we climbed that much. The TH is at about 8.900'. You don't need a 4WD vehicle to get to the TH -- at least when the road is dry -- although you'd probably prefer something with a bit of clearance. I think that something like a Subaru would be OK, again, when the road is dry. The road gets narrow the last 2-3 miles before the TH. The day before the hike I drove out there to make sure that I knew how to get to the TH, and I took some loppers out in a few places to trim some vegetation off the road so I wouldn't get any pinstripes. I didn't time my drive in on Chiatovich Road, but after the hike it took me about 45 minutes to drive from the TH back to Highway 264.

The first 1.5 miles or so of the hike follows a forest service trail, although it is a bit overgrown. However, it wasn't a big problem to stay on the trail, although a GPS is helpful. At about the 1.5 mile mark, we came up to an open meadow. The "trail" continued off to our left to the "descent route" from the peak. We continued more or less straight up to Trail Canyon saddle, at about 10,800'. At the saddle, the trail from the Queen Mine (the other trailhead for Boundary Peak) comes in from the NE.

From there, we continued south up and around a false summit. This was a steep, slow climb on loose dirt and talus -- we probably climbed 1,200 feet in about 3/4 mile. We then got to another saddle where we took a short break. Then we followed a relatively flat trail for a ways around the top of the false summit until we got another saddle just before hitting some boulder fields about 3/4 mile from the summit. From there it was mostly boulder hopping to the summit. There were a few cairns, and in some places you could see the route that previous hikers had taken. I had a GPS track which was helpful, but as much as anything we followed our instints to make our way through the boulders.

We got to the summit to enjoy the awesome views and to take a snack break. Montgomery Peak -- in California -- is only 0.6 miles away, and is quite impressive. You could see some peaks in the White Mountains off to the south. There were some wildfires in California, so the sky was much more hazy than normal. Fortunately we could smell any smoke though.

On the way back, once we got past the boulders, there was a saddle with a "descent route" that we took. This route was very steep -- we descended 1,600 feet in about 3/4 mile -- but I think that it was a lot better than going back the way that we came up. I would not go down it without trekking poles though. It actually wasn't all that bad -- the terrain was basically sand, so it was like being at the beach. There were a lot of short switchbacks, and I basically dug my heels in and slid down in some places, using poles to control your speed -- it was almnst like skiing!

As we neared the meadow that we crossed earlier, we passed through some ancient bristlecone pines. Once we got to the meadow, we retraced our earlier steps back to the TH.

On the early part of the hike we saw 8-10 white-tailed deer about the time that we got to the meadow. On the drive back out, not far from the TH we saw some wild horses.

We did not see many other hikers on the trail. On the way up, we could see one hiker ahead of us, and shortly before the summit he was coming back down. On our way back, we met a couple of hikers on their way up. One of them said that this one was his 44th state highpoint. While we were at the summit, we could look down and see 2 other hikers at about 12,000 feet, but for whatever reason they turned around and went back.

I have a GPS track for the drive to the trailhead if anyone wants it -- I'll have to figure out how to send it to you though.

This hike was supposed to be the grand finale of my trip. I ended up reversing my vacation route, and this became the first hike.
With 1300 ft elevation to go, my pup cut her back paw jumping around chasing wildlife. This would have been a good time to turn around... Instead, I started carrying her. The next hour was very slow going. I ended up off trail, and running low on water, so I turned around. I should have turned around a lot sooner.
Over all this is a great trail. I saw a lot of deer, wild horses and smaller wildlife. I will attempt it again.

Skipped Bonanza Peak near Las Vegas and headed straight to Boundary Peak. I wanted to do something big. This is a great peak, and conditions couldn’t have been better for it today. I started from the Trail Canyon Trailhead, and went up and down the descent route. This is pretty hard to go up, since it is a rough scree slope, but altitude makes it harder, too. Everything here has a Sierra feel, but the white rock is Quartz Monzonite, not granite.

While on top, I kept looking at White Mountain Peak, and thought I would head over there to hike that, but that ended up not working out. The summit views of the Sierra Nevada and Mono Lake were enjoyable, as was 2 nights of camping near the base. Boundary has ended up being my highest summit since San Luis Peak in Colorado in September of 2013. Since then, I’ve managed lots of Humphrey Summits but nothing greater. I felt it, too, as 13,140' is now 12,000’ higher than my living altitude. When I lived in Flagstaff I wouldn't have even thought of it.

Boundary Peak is located in the Nevada outpost of the California based Inyo National Forest. Perhaps for this reason, there are no actual developed trails to the summit, and there are few signs for the roads. I followed summitpost directions and the USFS signs to Trail Canyon, but it turned out that the route descriptions was for Queen Mine, not the TH I used. 1 of the 3 other hikers I saw this day made the same mistake using SP directions. This was fine, but I didn't know the route up to the Trail Canyon Saddle was off trail, and I never got close to the wild horses, where as the other 2 hikers of the day came from the Queen Mine and did. Because I went the visible trail and found the confusing route description useless on this roue, I went up and down the descent route, which is basically a steep loose trail that is very easy to follow. In fact, the hardest part was the loose scree, but that was fine. Once on the ridge, it was very obvious and easy to follow, just hard due to altitude.

Stats are per Carl's GPS route which I played with to get my route.

We headed for cooler temps and some peak high points. Boundary Peak high point of Nevada was the goal for today. We drove half way the night before and then arrived at the Boundary Peak TH about 10am. Kind of a late start but it's a relatively short ascent. Started from Trail Canyon TH about 8800 feet although there is an alternate one coming in from Queen Mine but both ways are roughly the same experience. There was decent amount of water in Trail Canyon in the first mile and a half but with temps in the upper 50's water was not an issue.

The trail starts up Trail Canyon following the creek for about 3 miles before it reaches a saddle. The Queen Mine route comes in at the saddle and from there both routes share the same path to the summit. We took a short break at the saddle and ran into 4 other people also taking a break.

The saddle is at about 10,600 so from there the route is very steep with about 2500 feet to go in the next 2.3 miles. At first their is a good route going up the ridge but it gets progressively harder to follow with multiple routes. Also the snow complicated the route forcing multiple paths to take. However, we soon found out that staying on the ridgeline was the best way to go despite there being more snow in places. What was a route turns into a steep rock scramble with moderate bouldering. About 1/2 mile from the top the snow was deeper and I put on micro spikes for much needed traction.

Finally made it to the summit with awesome 360 views at 13,140 feet. Montgomery Peak just 2/3 mile away is 200 or so feet higher than Boundary but the border between CA and NV runs right through the saddle separating the two peaks making Boundary the high point of Nevada. Windy and chilly on top so didn't spend very long on the summit before descending. About 1 mile down the ridgeline we took a different descending route which is recommended on the some of the peak triplogs. The route took us down a side canyon before linking back up with Trail Canyon and completing the small loop.

Boundary Peak, high point of Nevada was the goal for today. We drove half way the night before and then arrived at the Boundary Peak TH about 10am. Started from Trail Canyon TH about 8800 feet, I was surprised by the amount of water in Trail Canyon in the first mile and a half and all of the greenery.

We played leap frog with a couple until reaching the ridge line. An Australian guy was headed down and he warned us to stay on the ridge. At the ridge line, the hiking became crawling on all fours and I already stopped using the advice to stay high. I was along the side and all the boulders felt unsteady. The couple we were "with" turned around. At .4 miles from the top, I tapped out. I'll use the time crunch as my good excuse to be a quitter. We had a turn around time and I wanted to make sure Karl got up without waiting on me.

Karl told me to head down the alternate way. The route takes you down a side canyon before linking back up with Trail Canyon and completing the small loop. On the way up, I was on the right hand side of the ridge, I came down on the left side, thinking it would be easier to find the alternate trail down. Instead, I got snowed out and ended up doing the crab walk down the gravel for like a mile. I waited for Karl near the bottom, Karl was on the correct route and I watched him bound easily down the trail.

Started at the abandoned Queen Mine north of the peak. Approach is via 6.2 miles of fairly smooth dirt road after turning east off Highway 6 at a point 2.5 miles northeast of the NV/CA border.

Not a terribly scenic mountain perhaps, but the views are stupendous and with a good trail all the way to the top it's a relatively easy bag.
