This was a short hike to the summit of Peak 6062, the high point of the Broad Canyon Wilderness. This wilderness area is not too far from Las Cruces in the Organ Mountains - Desert Peaks National Monument.

I drove in on a paved road and parked at the wilderness boundary near a locked gate. The road past the gate leads to an FAA facility atop Magdalena Peak.

It was easy to figure out a route on this off-trail hike: from where I parked just go straight uphill to what turned out to be a false summit. It was a steep climb but the footing was pretty good. There were some cliff bands at the top but it was easy to find a weakness in them. The false summit was at the end of a mesa, so I just walked across the mesa to the obvious high point.

There were nice views at the top so there was a payoff for my efforts.

It was a cold morning -- 29 degrees when I started with a very brisk wind.

Given the long drive for such a short hike, this is not one that many people will want to do.
