I traversed the Bear River Range last September as part of the Bear 100, and it seems logical to summit the highpoint of the range as well. Also, the Tony Grove and White Pine area are said to be particularly scenic, but for those of us slow folks, you don't get there until it's dark...
When I got to the lake, it didn't disappoint. Bigger and prettier than I expected. Also a little crowded, but it is Labor Day...
The trail itself is pretty mellow most of the way, and then gets moderately steep the last mile or so. Pretty easy summit overall (unless you try it from the west end of the trail, in which case you might climb 6000 feet). Outstanding view from the top, although it's unfortunately very hazy today all over the great basin... I couldn't even see across the Cache Valley, but normally it would provide a good view of the Wasatch, and I suspect you could even see the Uintas and Winds off in the distance.
Pretty worthwhile summit if you're in the area and you're looking for something relatively easy. |
