| partners | | After several months of planning mid July finally arrived and the three of us were off to the Sierras for five days of fun and adventure. We left Tempe on Tuesday night and spent the night in Barstow. We then headed for Mammoth Lakes the next morning and stopped by Convict Lake for a quick warmup hike. This lake has been on my radar for several years and I'm glad to finally check it off the list.
We parked right next to the lake and started hiking in a clockwise direction. The going is very easy and the views are just spectacular. We made several stops along the loop and Chumley went for a quick swim. The southwest side of the lake features an elevated boardwalk above the creek. This is a really scenic and fun area. There were lots of boaters out and this area was their ideal chill spot.
This loop took about an hour and we then headed into Mammoth to set up camp. Afterward we did a couple of easy hikes in the area. We plan on driving into Yosemite tomorrow so we're easing in to our vacation. |

| partners | | Quick hike to stretch our feet after a long drive and before setting up camp. The sun was warm so I took the opportunity to swim. It was chilly but very refreshing. Laurel and Morrison are HUGE. Over 4000 feet directly above the lake. Those might be fun to conquer one day... |

| no partners | | After leaving Heart Lake somewhat disappointed with the fall foliage, I headed to Convict Lake. I figured that lower elevation would mean more leave still on the trees. I was right. Convict Lake was in full fall splendor.
I don’t hike here that often. It’s a pretty flat hike. The east end of the lake is desert like and the west end is where all of the trees are. It’s nice to visit every 5-10 years, but ordinarily I stick to higher trails with higher vantage points.
Today was different. I was looking for fall foliage and I knew that Convict Lake would have lots of it. As I headed west along the southern edge of the lake the scenery became increasingly beautiful. Glad I did a second hike today. |

| no partners | | Drove up to Convict Lake to see what it looked like. Lake was iced over and covered with snow. The trail was covered with snow so I settled with just taking photos of the lake while I watched clouds blow over the nearby peaks. |
