Got to the TH around 7am. Trail starts from Lake Andrews and does a series of switchbacks to get out of one basin and into another. Trail did this a couple of times gaining in elevation, alternating between open meadows and beautiful forests! During this time of year, this area seems to have frequent afternoon showers and this was especially true this year. Hiking in, I had to cross 14 streams! All very manageable, but a far cry from what I am use to in the valley. About 4 miles in came across an area about the size of two football fields where the trees had all been knocked down. Over half of them had been uprooted! It was quite a sight, coming upon this area from an unblemished forest. About 5 miles in, I hit what I thought was Crater Lake. It was a marshy pond with nothing but reeds showing. Not much of a lake. Then I noticed a muddy trail going along side the marsh that led further back into the interior. Little bit later (with muddy shoes) I arrived at Crater Lake. It was small, but very picturesque. Only saw 3 hikers, all as I was heading out. Wildlife minimal. I saw a couple of land birds, which I believe were grouses... but I'm not sure. Great climate! Great weather!! Great Hike!!! |
