Once again headed to CO in search of mushrooms. We were hoping the current heatwave and rains would produce more. Yet it was not to be. Still a nice day. The colors on the Million Dollar Highway are at peak and are stunning.

Looking for a 10-12 mile hike with some moderate elevation gain, we opted for the out n back to Crater Lake. It was a busy day and we encountered a handful of small groups doing the same day hike as us, as well as two groups of skiers and snowboarders on their way back from riding the Fourth of July Couloir on North Twilight, some backpackers who had overnighted near the lake, and one group heading up to summit Snowdon. There was even a group from Columbus, so 9L was able to get some Buckeye love  .

The first half of the hike was a little bit drier than we had experienced in previous days, but later on there was plenty of running water and mud, which we had become accustomed to. The lake wasn't particularly scenic, but was still a worthy destination, and the trail itself was fantastic. We took a short break at the lake as thunder rumbled overhead. Shortly after starting the return it began to rain. Despite ominous skies in all directions we managed to avoid a deluge, and after a short duration of light rain, it just sporadically drizzled for the rest of the hike out though the temperature dropped to light jacket temperature.

Despite the easy unique, we opted to skip the trip to Molas Lake Campground, though we did check out Little Molas and the trailhead for the Colorado Trail there.

Our final hike of our Colorado trip on fourth of July! We pulled in to a relatively packed trailhead by Andrews Lake. We parked in an unofficial spot & started hiking around 10:30am. The first mile of this hike makes a nice climb and then has two rolling climbs. From there it's easy going as you hike through forest and open sections. The views of Engineer to the west are breathtaking & North Twilight Peak dominates to the south. These mountain views never get old! We eventually hit Crate Lake and admired this area. The Lake is nice and there are several campsites around the perimeter. I opted for a lunch spot on west side while Chumley & Claire worked their way around.

After lunch we started our return as some clouds moved in. There were a few sounds of Thunder and then some rain started to fall. We put on our rain gear and continued. The rain was not bad & didn't last too long. We made good time on the return and then headed back down to Purgatory for an early dinner.

This hike completes our trip to Colorado. We hiked five trails over the course of four days and made stops in Durango & Silverton. We covered a lot of ground and it left me thirsting for more. Colorado is such a beautiful state and is paradise for a hiker!

BLAST FROM THE PAST! Did this hike while on vacation in Durango Col. Great place to go and escape the heat. (This is one of several hikes that I did and will be posting.) Got to the TH around 7am. Trail starts from Lake Andrews and does a series of switchbacks to get out of one basin and into another. Trail did this a couple of times gaining in elevation, alternating between open meadows and beautiful forests! During this time of year, this area seems to have frequent afternoon showers and this was especially true this year. Hiking in, I had to cross 14 streams! All very manageable, but a far cry from what I am use to in the valley. About 4 miles in came across an area about the size of two football fields where the trees had all been knocked down. Over half of them had been uprooted! It was quite a sight, coming upon this area from an unblemished forest. About 5 miles in, I hit what I thought was Crater Lake. It was a marshy pond with nothing but reeds showing. Not much of a lake. Then I noticed a muddy trail going along side the marsh that led further back into the interior. Little bit later (with muddy shoes) I arrived at Crater Lake. It was small, but very picturesque. Only saw 3 hikers, all as I was heading out. Wildlife minimal. I saw a couple of land birds, which I believe were grouses... but I'm not sure. Great climate! Great weather!! Great Hike!!!

I was originally thinking Highland Mary Lakes for this weekend, but the more I thought about it (esp recently coming back from Glacier) the more I wanted to do an alpine lake below treeline since it'd be much more scenic and this lake made a great backup plan. Not the same Crater lake that AHOTE, Tewa, and company recently did but their triplogs did help me decide in switching locations. :)

Such an amazingly beautiful hike that starts at 10,700ft alongside an alpine lake that's popular with families & fishermen. It quickly starts climbing up to a ridge as we start gasping for oxygen though are rewarded with sweeping views of jagged peaks, thru thick sections of firs, past meadows & marshes, and eventually leading you to an even sweeter view of another alpine lake up at 11,500ft. :y: The lake was a tad popular this weekend, so before finding a spot we climbed further up to the upper lake & pass to see the view down into the canyon of the Animus River. On the way back down, we found an awesome spot and setup my new sweet BPing tent before heating up dinner and calling it a night. It was a little windy at night but surprisingly it wasn't too cold that morning as we broke down camp and had to eventually leave that amazing alpine lake and sweet views... ;) We made fairly short work of the hike back now that we were more acclimated to the altitude and it was mostly downhill.
