| no partners | | I decided to go hike to the Eccentric Benchmark (elevation of 12,276 feet and prominence of 716 feet) in order to bag not one, but two, Utah County Highpoints.
The Eccentric Benchmark is sometimes also referred to as Eccentric Peak or Chepeta Peak.
It was a long drive to get to the Chepeta Lake Trailhead, which is 45 miles off of a main road. The first 20 miles are on a paved road, and the last 25 miles are on a well graded dirt road. I was in a rental 2WD SUV and had no issues on the drive.
In the early part of the hike you pass 3 man made lakes (Chepeta, Papoose, and Moccasin). Then there is a short, steep climb up a boulder field. After that you are hiking in high alpine meadows to the rounded summit. There is lots of talus and boulder fields along the way though -- much more than I thought there would be. All the rocks slowed me down quite a bit.
This is a very scenic area -- there are a number of 12,000+ foot peaks in the Uinta mountain range. The views along the way were better than those at the summit imho.
Given the long drive to the TH, this would be a good area to camp and do some exploring for a couple of days. |
