Great post-Christmas hike with some of my kids and a grandson. This is a popular hike in the area--perhaps moreso in the summer, but still there were a fair number of folks on the trail. On the way to the falls, the trail passes by a sledding area, and there were lots of family out partaking.

The trail was snow covered all the way, but it was packed well. Traction devices were very helpful but only semi-required spots are a 12 foot downclimb that was ice covered but had a rope to assist, and then the final climb up to the falls, which was also icy and provided a rope for an assist.

On the way, we crossed a frozen stream with some amazing ice-crystals "growing" on the surface.

The falls themselves were a little tricky to locate, if you didn't know where they were. The entry to the falls requires a stooped scoot. Pretty cool to see the falls inside the little "cave."

#24 of 50 hikes. Nice, easy hike with family to celebrate the end of the school year. Donut Falls is located in Big Cottonwood Canyon near Salt Lake City, Utah. It's very popular, so we saw plenty of people. Once at the waterfall you can take a rough climbing trail to view the hole from above. Pretty spectacular. I enjoyed the time in the pine trees, the fresh air, and being with my family.

Decided after a week of wanting to hike out to Donut Falls and not ever being motivated to leave the house after dark, we finally set out around 8PM to hike up to Donut Falls. Since the gate is closed from Big Cottonwood Canyon Road, we had to start our hike there, after .8 miles of hiking we finally got to the trailhead. We stopped for a second to look at the TH sign and then continued on, shortly encountering a group of 5 snowshoers which told us the trail was beautiful. We hiked up to the falls, much faster than the first time I'd traveled up there with the U.T.E. members, walked right on up to the falls, only encountering a little bit of ice that proved slightly challenging to cross, and then made it to the cave opening. We went inside and sat where it was VERY warm, man the air was chilly that night, a whopping 8 degrees! After chilling and taking a couple pictures we trekked back down the trail and ran from the TH to where we had parked the car along BCC Road. All in all a fun trip.
