#33 of 50 hikes. Frary Peak is the highest point on Antelope Island in the Great Salt Lake near Salt Lake City, Utah. I hiked this trail last year on July 4th and hope to keep this as a yearly tradition. This year, I had company. My son, and two co-workers David and Courmarane. We started early at 6:30am, but it was already pretty warm. The island is quite barren and offers zero shade. The trail leads to the west side which gave us a respite from the morning sun, but not for long. Still, it was a rewarding hike with great views at the top and we got to see a bison and antelope. :D At one point we could even hear a chorus of coyotes yipping far below.

Left SLC for Antelope Island Monday afternoon. Payed the $15 for my $10 entrance fee and a night at the campground (later on I'll find out why it's only $5 to stay here). I checked out the visitor center and stopped at the restaurant on the island for a BLT, then it was off to the trailhead.

I started up the trail with some really gray skies overhead. This would be another case of "let's head up until the weather says to go away." The grade on this one was a relief from the other hikes I had done so far. It was noticeably easier, but it still kept the heart rate up.

I reached a bump below the actual summit that had a relatively small antenna of sorts. The true peak had a bouldery ridge leading to the top that I didn't remember reading about. There was a trail heading off in a different direction, but it was descending, so I went against the logs/rocks blocking the spur trails and started up the ridgeline. There were some good drop-offs and a couple class 3/4 climbs along the way. Really fun stuff when the two don't occur simultaneously.

The views from Frary were spectacular - Great Salt Lake to the west, Wasatch Front to the east, and Antelope Island's backbone running north and south. I could see some people heading down near the hill with the antenna on it so I figured it to be the proper trail and I took it back instead of the ridge. Shortly before reaching the trailhead, I headed up Dooly Knob trail. The little outcrop at the end was swarming with gnats so I booked it.

Which brings me back to the cheap prices - don't wear shorts or short sleeves if you're going to visit the island. I wore shorts on this trip and the bites on my legs finally stopped itching a few days later. That goes double for the campground. I was swatting mosquitoes away every few seconds while I made dinner that night. Some of the swarms of insects looked like rain when my headlights shone on them the following morning. I've never seen anything like it.
