finally got out to do this hike that has been on my list for years.

warm day so i started on the early side. went CCW and up KA Hill first. first few miles are just easy hiking through the woods.

right when i got to the beginning of rim country, i saw 2 bald eagles! both of them cheeped at me lol.

took the side trip out to the pomeroy tanks and saw some frogs and lily pads! really cool. also tookk the side trip out to the dry (but still worth seeing) sycamore falls. great views along the rim. as i started heading back west to close the loop there was running water which really surprised me. hot but tolerable at this point - thankful for a nice breeze.

great quick getaway to williams area and out of the tucson inferno

Road Trip Day 2

Second day in Flagstaff area. We hadn't done this hike yet. It was pretty enjoyable with a few good views. Saw a Gophersnake, Wild Turkey and Turkey Vulture. Hike was pretty much as described and easy to follow.

Great hike! Beautiful weather, though cold for camping in the evening/morning. This is a beautiful hike including a ponderosa pine forest and views into the Sycamore Canyon itself. I camped with a friend just north of Sycamore Falls Trailhead so we got an early start. We walked from our camp spot to the trail. The trail was generally easy to follow with a couple of exceptions for water crossings leading to and by Pomeroy Tanks. There was plenty of water except along the rim itself. There was scattered evidence of the 2021 fire, but damage was scattered and most of the pines survived. We did see a pack of coyotes and some elk in the distance. We didn't come across any other hikers. A good but somewhat tiring day.

We hiked Sycamore Rim Loop around this time last year and decided to come back and see if the falls were flowing after all the rain this summer. Our first stop of the morning was Keyhole Sink, then we drove over to Dow Spring Trailhead, our same starting point as last year. Even on the drive to the trailhead, the wildflowers were fantastic, and that continued throughout the hike. There was so much more color than our visit last September, when everything was dry and the sky was a hazy gray because of all the wildfire smoke...this time: a lot more green, more wildflowers, and a clear, blue sky.

We hiked the loop clockwise this time and did the lower/flatter part of the loop first, and there was a fair amount of water around Dow and L.O. Springs. I had a feeling Sycamore Falls wouldn't be flowing, though, when some of the areas of Sycamore Creek on the eastern part of the loop only had a trickle, not much different from last year. We took a short break at Sycamore Canyon Vista and enjoyed the overlook, and the trail was mostly empty to that point, with only two other groups of hikers.

We started to see more hikers and climbers near Sycamore Falls, which, as expected, was dry again this year. We did spend a little more time in that area and went over to the west side of the canyon and got some better views looking down into the canyon at the creek. The Pomeroy Tanks area had a lot of water and greenery, and there were some huge tad poles in the pools.

The mosquitoes were out of control on K.A. Hill, which was strange because that's one of the driest parts of the hike. We didn't take any time to enjoy the views up there since stopping meant getting immediately swarmed by mosquitoes...not that moving helped much anyway--I picked up a lot of bites along that part of the hike. The bug situation improved as we came down the other side of K.A. Hill, and the area around K.A. Trailhead was very green and beautiful--a lot more water and greenery there, too.

Even though Sycamore Falls wasn't flowing, this is always a really nice hike, and it was great to see all the flowers and bright colors. We'll have to come back during the snow melt sometime to see the falls. And we got lucky with the Labor Day traffic on I-17, with only a few slowdowns.

Hike w/ kiddos. Camped along FR 150 on Thursday evening, found a nice spot with a campfire ring so we could enjoy some s'mores before the fire restrictions take effect. Woke up the next morning, packed up, drove a short distance and started on the trail west of KA Hill, there's no trailhead here but I wanted to do the loop CCW and get the hill out of the way first thing, so just found a spot to pull off the road near the trail crossing. Climb up the hill was slow and steady, 5yo had big feelings, eventually we reached the summit and had our first of seven thousand breaks. Downhill went better and we reached the logging camp and creek without much hassle. Creek was very dry except for 2 or 3 ponds, which was a real bummer, because the kids really like playing with water, and I didn't want them tossing rocks into a small pond that a lot of animals were likely depending on. Anyways, they liked the big canyon views, especially Vista Point, and we saw some climbers at the fork, which is always cool. The heat and dryness were a lot and the last few miles through Pomeroy was a slog. There was much rejoicing when we got back to the Jeep with ice water and cool snacks. Trail is in great shape, area is pretty (if dry and hot), and we only saw two groups of hikers on the trail.

Wanted to check out the north part of Sycamore Canyon, and it felt like a 10 mile day, so this seemed like a good option. Started out by getting the climb up KA hill out of the way, which was a little steeper than I expected. From the summit, it was mostly running down to Pomeroy Tanks, which was a cool little spot. Then down to the falls, which was dry as expected. This mile or so might be really nice in the spring time when there's flow.

The canyon rim itself is kind of...meh. Not a bad little place for a jog, but not really a destination, either.

It gets a little more interesting when you get up into the eastern fork, which I didn't realize at the time was Sycamore Creek (the western fork where the falls are is actually Big Spring Canyon). There was actually some water flowing in this section, and once the trail goes down into the drainage, was nice and refreshing.

Started to feel heat and fatigue towards the end, but on balance, the last few miles of this loop was the highlight.

Not sure where the actual spring is in relation to the trail, but there's water in this section of the creek.

There's nothing quite like waking up to the cool air of the mountains, and strolling out of camp and right onto the trail. :y:

It is evident that there was an impressive flood on the west side of the loop a few weeks ago, with evidence of water flowing about four feet deep in Isham Spring Canyon ... despite being totally dry now. This is neither a narrow, nor steep drainage, so it would have been something to see that flow. I had seen photos of the falls flowing on the socials, so I knew it had happened, but despite seeing the results on roads and drainages all around the area, there was no lingering flow today.

Nonetheless, it was a nice hike with water in all the usual spots, and probably a few others. It got a little bit warm in the sun, and our early start kept us from seeing anybody else until about 8 miles in, except for the huge mob of sheep that grazes up here and their human shepherd.

I learned that lobster mushrooms are edible ... actually delicious and taste amazingly like seafood. I need to hike with people who eat healthy foods more often!

Traveled counterclockwise from the trailhead nearest KA Hill. It was 85F and 15% humidity, 15-30mph wind. Trail was in good shape. Flower observations minimal. No water over falls, and what water I did see was stagnant. Saw a herd of +50 sheep bedded down in the creek near old sawmill site -- could smell them from a mile away. Even though the forest had Stage II fire restrictions, saw people driving their quads off designated routes and heard firearms discharge several times. Overall, nice day for one of my favorite hikes in the area.

This trail really surprised me, what with all the ponds along the way. I lost count! The hike seemed longer than 12 miles, although it is probably because I was tired from a backpacking trip the day before. I didn't see much wildlife, just some birds, squirrels, and horned lizards. But at one point I really smelled elk, very strong and pungent, and I think they may have been bedded down close by.

I read a lot of the previous triplogs, most of which mentioned mud and mosquitoes! No mud, no mosquitoes today!

I enjoyed the little KA Hill. The Peaks had fresh snow from a little storm yesterday, which was all melted by the time I finished the hike. It was 27 degrees when I got up this morning, but it warmed up very quickly and I hiked in a skort, always looking for shade for my breaks.

The views of Sycamore Canyon are splendid. I brought only a little point-and-shoot camera that doesn't do it justice.

At one point, near the Vista, I could see the cliffs I had camped underneath a couple nights before. I had hiked down the Kelsey-Little Lookout Trail and camped there Thursday night.

I don't know why my GPS posted as slightly longer by a half mile or more than other people's logs, but I did walk out to a lot of viewpoints, and also maybe because of where I parked. There is a spur trail to the parking area that's close to 1/4 mile.

All the springs I saw are ponds, and I don't know how to estimate gallons per minute when it's a pond. They all had a lot of water.

This was a well-timed little Sunday stroll. We started from the falls and hiked CCW, the morning after good amount of rain fell on the area. The trail itself was essentially a small, muddy stream. Every drainage was flowing and feeding pools of chocolate yoo-hoo. Nice to see good flow at all of the falls. Skies were very clear, allowing for great views down canyon, to go with the sound of rushing water. A juvenile AZ black rattler gave us a buzz and hung out for a photo. I particularly enjoyed the climb up KA Hill and the change in scenery/footing. Pomeroy Tanks area was a waterworld. The trail was almost entirely under water, so we just took the path of least resistance, through clouds of mosquitoes. Weather stayed enjoyable all morning and we only saw one other hiker on the trails. This was a great first time visit to the area for me.

Before heading back to Phoenix, we decided to hike the Rim loop since we figured the falls would be flowing after all the rain the previous afternoon. We started at the falls, and they were definitely flowing. We continued on the loop counter-clockwise, through more mud than trail. Water everywhere, which was great to see, but the lack of a dry trail did slow us down. A few miles in, we saw a small AZ Black rattler hiding under a log, but that was pretty much it for the wildlife sightings. I always find the section between KA Hill and Pomeroy Tanks to be the most boring part of the loop, and it was again on Sunday. The abundance of mosquitoes added to the enjoyment too. Once at Pomeroy, it was impossible to get through some spots with dry shoes, so the last mile or so of the hike was crossing back and forth across the creek with no attempt to avoid the water. The entire loop was almost devoid of hikers all day--we only saw one other guy, and a few climbers near the falls.

As part of the HAZFest weekend we decided to hike the Sycamore Rim Loop with John and Kyle on Saturday. After enjoying a great fire and good company on Friday night we started somewhat late from Sycamore Falls TH. But the loop isn’t too long so we made our way along the rim and enjoyed some decent views into Sycamore Canyon. After about 4 miles along the main rim the trail moves away and follows one of the canyon arms. This section was actually surprising scenic especially around LO Spring and Dow Spring.

After the springs we climbed Ka Hill the only real elevation of the day. It was just enough AEG to get a workout but not too much as we continued down the other side to Pomeroy Tanks. The tanks is a very cool area but unfortunately storms moved in so we didn’t stick around very long. It started to rain in the last mile so we made quick time back to the TH.

Did the rim loop once more. Saw an osprey, hawks, and vultures. Then found a HAZ hiker and helped out with navigating through a spot that wasn't well marked. Got caught in heavy rains and some lightning nearby delayed crossing some open meadows, but I finished after having to cross rivers from nowhere that were flowing into Sycamore canyon. The trail itself had 3 inches of water in most spots and keeping dry was not an option.
