This hike was to the summit of Granite Peak (elevation of 9,732 feet and prominence of 4,397 feet), the highpoint of Humboldt County. Humboldt County is in northern Nevada; Winnemucca is the county seat.

I drove in on a well-graded dirt road and parked at Hinkey Pass. My rental 2WD Rav4 made the drive easily. A 4WD vehicle could drive as much as a couple of miles further.

The hike was a mixture of road walking, hiking off-trail up some steep slopes, and rock scrambling.

The first couple of miles were hiking on a spur road from Hinkey Summit. It was an enjoyable road walk though -- most of it was on a ridge that had great views all around. There was hardly any vegetation more than knee high, so there was nothing obstructing the views.

I walked on the road until I came to a crumple gate, and then made a left turn going up a steep slope. About the only vegetation was sage brush, but I had to weave around some of it. This section was too steep to be enjoyable, but I managed to get to the top of the slope. Then I had to give up a bit of elevation to get to the base of the peak.

The final push to the summit involved some fun rock scrambling. It was mostly class 2, but there was one class 3 slab just below the summit. I started to go up the slab, but instead went up an easier route to the left of the slab. There was one short section that might have been class 2+, but it was very short. There was no exposure on the scramble, and the rock was solid and grippy.

There were great views at the summit, so I hung out there for a bit.

Synopsis
This was another enjoyable Great Basin peak, and I am glad that I did this one.
