El Morro is a Very interesting National Monument. There’s natural beauty, historical and cultural things to see here.
After a visit to the Visitor Center, Rudy and I hiked up to the to of El Morro ( the nose) Mesa. It’s a quick hike to the top, after the heavy rains since las week in New Mexico, footing was a bit slick on the wet sandstone and polished rock at the summit. Recommend approach shoes for stability.

Upon reaching the top, there was a crew of Native NPS workers shoring up a wall that had collapsed from the recent rains. They were also adding more drainage for the ruins. They were happy to answer all of my questions about their work and the dwellings.

This is a dog friendly hike too.

Return visit, and hopefully many more to come. Just a really cool place.

It was a bit warm, but not bad. One of the volunteers suggested we do the hike clockwise, which is reverse of what the park brochures state. Much preferred this way; steps were a lot better to climb than the switchbacks. Not sure if this would be a good idea when the monument is busier, though.

Lots of reminiscing over getting caught in a thunderstorm while on the ridge two and a half years ago.

Spent a good amount of time talking to one of the rangers...not sure if I'd seen these before, but she pointed out the steps in the wall that went direct from the oasis up to the ruins.

It was the first day the WNPA bookstore was back open, and so we took the opportunity to splurge.

Hiking up onto the stone ridge surrounding the box canyon and then circled back to the Spanish inscriptions and oasis. Cool place!

Inscriptions are definitely a must-see. Beautiful hike interrupted by a cool, but intense, thunderstorm while we were on the ridge. I need to get better at reading the weather, especially while carrying the kid. We were over halfway done, so continued. Fortunately, the rock is still pretty grippy wet.

Driving through NM on a summer road trip to Red River, I stopped at El Morro. I arrived at 3pm, the park closes at 5. The woman at the table said I could start hiking, but had to be off the trail by 4:30 or else they'd be mad and I'd be fined if I got locked in the park.

Can do, I said. There's lots of steps she said. Can do, I said.

Wish I'd had more time to look at signatures, play around on the mesa top and enjoy the park. I ran into an Ancestral Lands Trail Crew working on taking out the asphalt on the trail and replacing it with natural surfacing. Would have liked more time to chat with them, too. This is definitely worth the stop!

Side trip on the way home from our Chaco/Bisti Wilderness Experience 2011 => http://hikearizona.com/TL.php?ID=63350

I became aware of this Inscription Rock when researching the Beale Wagon Road => http://hikearizona.com/decoder.php?ZTN=491 Found the Simpson and Kern 1849 inscriptions, but failed to locate Beale's 1857 inscription.

With Inscription Rock as a gauge for the number of travellers that passed this way, makes you wonder about the sequence of events that led to the railroad and I-40 route ending up about 25 miles north of this site...

Randy and I did a New Mexico roadtrip! The El Morro National Monument is an out-of-the-way destination that was just perfect to take in amongst a solid jam-packed travel day. The trail up at the top of this mesa is a playgound. I just wanted to run and jump and sing here all day long. Of course we didn't since there were other things to see and do. I'd definitely go back here.

A whirlwind road trip to northern New Mexico with Cindy to to show her some of my favorite places, all new to her. El Morro is one of those great "sleeper" monuments, along the path less traveled. The entire drive from Witch Well, Arizona to Grants, New Mexico is wonderful.
