Bit of an odd day, but good! Started out with the slower hikers... Yubao headed out with the faster hikers. Our group of nine dropped to eight with one turned back with at the challenging lower tilted ledges. We enjoyed an easy pace, soaking in the moments of towering cliffs. Dendretic rock... tree canopy... big bouldering. Very nice.

For once, I convinced some of the hikers to stay far left, avoiding the dirt trail up to the saddle. They enjoyed an all climbing rock ascent! I always have to lead the slower hikers up the overly steep trail; have never been able to check out the far left all the way to the top. Turns out it is good! Next time, I'll take everyone up that route.

Checked out a new descent from the saddle: far right chute. It is the best of the four routes! Descended the west side ridge above the mine... I enjoyed it... everyone else... not so much?

A variety of falls and tumbles did some minor damage... but all in all... good. Five hours of hiking... Seven hours total. Fast group was back in four hours! Too fast!

We intend to check out a spur canyon and a possible steep exit on our next outing up... few months away? Also spotted an interesting route up out of Big Ice...

First hike wherein I did not take pictures, save for a few shots at the lunchbreak up at the saddle.

Wow... after enjoying a couple hikes up Little Ice Canyon, I thought we'e found what might be the best little canyon in Southern New Mexico. Little did I know that the adjacent cut, Big Ice Canyon, would blow Little Ice away in many respects! More Scrambling, Bigger Scrambles. More water falls. More Bedrock. Exceptional Moments of Rock. And, given that there is not the ridgeline exit, the tendency will be to descend the way you came... doubling all the good stuff!

Maybe the pictures will begin to tell the story. I need to return for a longer, bigger hit. Effectively, Big Ice is used as the approach to Baldy Peak. Today I was leading a couple of hikers (Jason and Luster) checking out whether they might enjoy that hike with an upcoming group. They seemed to enjoy the cut, as did Josephine (may have been her biggest canyon effort to date?)

Demanding and fun routing... scenic beyond measure. Like Little Ice, if someone lives in the Cruces area... hike twice monthly! If you live 12 hours away... worth the drive over. Everyone drives over to hike Organ Needle... great for Peak Baggers... but if you want canyon joy... get cold... do the Ice.

While rarely hiked, this Canyon is likely the best of the best in the Las Cruces area. The drama of the towering granite cliffs, combined with running water and a lushness rare to most of our hikes... well, just too nice. Add to that, moderately challenging scrambles, exceptional Vistas, and shade! This is a pleasure of a day hike.

The trail leading into the old improvements does not really enter Ice Canyon, but leads to the beginnings of both Little Ice and Big Ice Canyons. Little Ice is accessed from the higher trail... wind your way up and around to the small pond... then take off up canyon from there.

The steeply sloped bedrock base, common to the lower sections, tends to turn hikers back early on. If care is taken, the footing is good... anyone moving with caution can navigate these challenges. There is no exposure...

The canyon has a great sense of moment. Go slow and enjoy.

Well up the canyon you will be confronted with an option: go left up a huge cut... go right up what appears to be a side canyon... or go straight, hoping for the towering walls to open up. Go right... that is your route. Left would carry you up and over into Big Ice Canyon. Straight cliffs out.

The next hyper steep section of canyon offers fun and challenging scrambles on the left side... and a very rough dirt "trail" on the right. Both carry you to the top.

Once up, there are a variety of choices to move down and around. You want to access the ridge on the north, overlooking the Basin. I opted to move around to the East, winding down and around, then connecting with that Ridge eventually. Not the best option. I'll look for the proper route next time!

Moving down the ridge is fairly easy along a sort of trail. It winds around, at one point turning sharp left as it descends a bit of a cliffed out section. You might be able to work your way down the cliffs, but better to avoid and look for the worn route. Once below those cliffs, the route tends to hold to the top of the ridge, providing views both North and South. Bar Canyon to the south has some interesting falls as you look over and down.

The exit ridge to the north is fairly obvious... although it is probably possible to head on down any of the side ridges. I plan to explore a good looking one taking off from the aforementioned cliffs...?

Need to write a description of this great route, including GPS to firm up the routing for those wishing to venture up and in! Good excuse for heading back over for a re-hike!

This one is a must do!

I first visited this area in the fall of 2006 in conjunction with camping and hiking at Aguirre Springs. I had been interested in the story of the Hermit (Giovanni María Agostino-Justiniani) since I became aware of it in the early 1990's while sightseeing around Las Vegas, New Mexico. When I finally hiked up to Hermit's Peak for the first time in 2003, I became even more interested in this individual. A visit to La Cueva in 2006 (where he was murdered in 1869 and just a short ways down from the visitor center) was followed by a failed initial attempt to find his grave site in the fairly large cemetery in Mesilla.

But, what I didn't discover until January 2011, was this beautiful little stroll to some great historical artifacts up in Ice Canyon! :D

This is a nice easy road walk to enjoy if you are in the Las Cruces area. Be sure to check in at the visitor center and view the historical displays.

These are rugged mountains where most of the hikes are not this mellow. ;)

rode the $2 bus over to check out the potentials... that's one cheap 90 mile ride! Once over in Cruces, can hop on the bike and ride out for the hiking. Today I met up with Yubao for a ride up to hike Yellow Rocks and a variety of other trails in the area... once they close down the Lincoln National Forest (three weeks away?) this may become my twice weekly hike pattern! This is one nice looking area!!

Met up with Terri and her 11 hikers... they were enjoying their Friday outing.

Nice day.
