Got to the ranch shortly before a dozen other people (including small children) pulled in to partake of the tour. I approached Brantley and asked if we could forego the official tour and proceed by ourselves to the rock art. He understood, gave us directions, and left it to us. Good decision as the canyon isn't that big. But the rock art is very impressive.

Finally made it out to this truly incredible ranch and hunk of land!
It was an absolute honor to be led by the legendary Brantley Baird around his property listening to his stories and wisdom.
The petroglyphs in this segment of Chevelon are truly by far the most elaborate and incredible display I have and probably will ever witness in my life.
It’s stimulation overload!
I spent a considerable amount of time admiring and enjoying them but there is still so many markings to see, older, newer, overlapped and underneath one another, they are truly everywhere along those sacred walls.
I already want to return to the general area as the archeological significance around there is truly special and still would love to walk, float and swim the entirety of Clear Creek and Chevelon down to the desert region terminus.

Had a chance to visit this place with a woman who has spent a lot of time recording the petroglyphs here. This was by invitation only, for members of the Arizona Archaeological Society. Very interesting day. I also got to go swimming!

Hard to believe no one has logged a trip here since 2007. It has been on my bucket list for a while. It is special now that all petroglyphs in Petrified National Monument can only be viewed from quite a distance(binoculars). Sure you pay, but it is worth it. The museums are a view, not only into native Indian history but real Arizona cowboy history. The owner is a living legend and he has been collecting artifacts for seventy years. His personal collection will leave you in awe. By the way, hikearizona.com gets a plug in his literature.
Today we had the place to ourselves and opted to browse without a guide. Not a problem, the owner gave us a key and asked that we lock up. Good old Arizona hospitality.

A pristine set of petroglyphs on multiple panels in a peaceful canyon with running water. What's not to like?

Very reminiscent of V-Bar-V http://hikearizona.com/decoder.php?ZTN=135, only way more rock art examples!

Minor faux pau on way home. Hwy 99 sign indicated Payson 48 miles and we took this southerly route in to what is for us, uncharted territory. Came to a Forest Road closure due to snow near the rim and had to back track. Frustration was muted by 4 separate bands of wild turkeys we saw along the way...

Not the traditional Chevelon Crossing trail head, but explored from the Territorial Road (McLaws Road on some maps) bridge spanning the canyon near the confluence with the Little Colorado River. Should note that Chevelon Canyon is 40+ miles long, so I'm sure there are plenty of other interesting sections to explore. Did this after visiting Rock Art Ranch...
