| no partners | | I was in the Great Basin National Park with the intention of hiking up to Wheeler Peak. The day before the hike I drove to the park to check out the trailhead; however, to my dismay the road to the TH was closed due to a paving project that week.
Instead of hiking from the Wheeler Peak TH, I went up the Lehman Creek Trail, which starts at the Upper Lehman Campground. Once I got up to the Wheeler Peak CG I continued on some campground roads and then the Bristlecone-Glacier Trail and the Alpine Lakes Loop Trail until I got to the Wheeler Peak Trail. I continued on the Wheeler Peak Trail up to about 11,000 feet; by that time it was 11:00 AM and there were some dark clouds forming overhead. The forecast was for a decent chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon, so I decided to abort the climb to Wheeler Peak and instead reversed course and went back to the TH. On the way back I stopped off at Stella Lake, which was an enjoyable diversion.
It was a bummer not to have hiked up to Wheeler, but I will get back up there again sometime. I liked the area, and the Lehman Creek Trail was an enjoyable hike. |
