I have been looking forward to seeing this tree, since I learned of it last year. I finally got my chance to see it this past Sunday. It was my first stop on a little three day trip to the southern reaches and lower elevations of the Blue Range.

The trail is in excellent shape and the half mile descent goes quick. A partial fence guards some of the tree, but the setting is pretty informal, with no plaques or other signs indicating the large trees rank or presence. I was impressed by the tree and it made the perfect leg stretcher for me and the pup after the long trip from the valley.

After spending half the day in Morenci taking care of some business, I had a few afternoon hours left for a short hike. Drove through the mine and up the Coronado Trail stopping at Sardine Saddle and first hiked the very short out-n-back Big Tree trail. Cool little trail that took me down to the enormious AZ Cypress tree that in 1988 was recognized as the largest reported of it's species growing in the US! I then crossed the highway and got on the H L Canyon trail with just enough time to take it down to the Frye trail junction before returning back. What a scenic trail just the first mile of this one is and I will be back in autumn (should look awesome) to complete the entire loop! Headed back home to Safford as big storm clouds developed all over the county and after returning home and unloading the truck of hiking gear, I packed it back up with storm chasing gear and headed out .....

I was in the area so I thought I'd check out this trail again. There were leaves on the maple trees and no snow this time. Quite a short hike, but very nice.

After missing out on a trip to the Sierra Ancha the day before due to vehicle problems, I just had to get out and do something. I had seen this trail on the Apache Sitgreaves website and thought it might be something interesting to see. So I headed up the Coronado Trail with the intention of hiking the Fry and Big Tree Trails, then biking back to my truck. The steep Fry Trail was covered in 8 inches of ice for what appeared to be several miles, so I chose the Big Tree Trail instead. It was an enjoyable little hike. The Big Tree is a BEAST! Nothing went as planned this weekend, but at least I got to do something fun.
