| no partners | | I took a trip up to Mammoth Lakes to get some hiking in and to photograph autumn leaves. I have heard for years that Lundy Canyon is the place to go. Lundy Canyon is over 45 minutes north of Mammoth Lakes and with so much good hiking right in Mammoth Lakes, it’s hard to justify a trip to Lundy Canyon. I decided to do it anyway and am glad I did.
I had a choice between two hikes. The first was a hike up Lundy Canyon. You can take the trail all the way up to 20 Lakes Basin, but the steep section at the end that head up to the basin is no longer maintained do to frequent landslides. That means it’s also not safe. The other choice was to head up to Lakes Canyon. What sold me on Lakes Canyon was a photo of Oneida Lake.
I knew I would see some autumn leaves early in the hike, but wasn’t sure about the rest of the hike. I saw plenty of autumn leaves on the hike, so no worries. My trip up the canyon was very slow, not because it was strenuous, but because I shot so many photos.
The highlights of the hike were obviously the autumn leaves, but also the May Lundy Mine and Oneida Lake. However, having seen all of the great autumn leaves down in Lundy Canyon while I was climbing and descending the canyon wall to and from Lakes Canyon, I decided to drive up the canyon to see it up close. A lot of the photos at the end of my photoset are from the drive up Lundy Canyon. |
