Hiked Taylor Creek to the Double Arch in Zion National Park (specifically Kolob Canyon) with Victoria.

We actually lucked out with this one. The trail has a huge number of water crossings (more even than I noted on my recorded route) but the water level was low enough that we could rock hop using regular hiking shoes. This was great because it was April and cold enough that you didn't want to be walking around in water shoes (wet or otherwise) and a winter storm rolled in later that day with sleet, snow, and rain which increased water flowrates throughout the park. So people hiking the next couple days probably didn't have such an easy time.

Aside from the rock hopping at each creak crossing the terrain was not technical and we quickly explored the route. The canyon gradually narrows as you ascend and the views become more scenic accordingly. It does not reach slot canyon levels but the walls do get close enough to dominate the skyline in both directions.

There are two historical cabins (Larson and Fife) along the route. Aside from a small plaque at each with a brief description, there is not much to see in or around them. The real treat comes at the end of the trail where a portion of the creek flow seeps from an alcove with two natural arches (on above the other). This is a beautiful spot with hanging-garden type vegetation and tricking water complementing the huge sandstone enclosure. The lower arch is so large it is difficult to photograph from a reasonable distance and is a great place to spend some time and take in the sight.

This was a great hike and a good alternative to the crowded Zion Canyon destinations. It was well worth the short detour away from the main park area and is a much lower barrier to entry/lower difficulty water hike than The Narrows.

road trip to utah with my nebraska friend sue
in 2009 we hit the north rim, zion and bryce
in 2016 we saw natural bridges, arches and canyonlands
this year the plan got revised a few times, and we decided on zion, bryce and capitol reef
hadn't been to the kolob canyons area of zion, so we got there late afternoon
hiked taylor creek to the double arch alcove
pleasant hike with about 40 easy creek crossings and a couple of cabins along the way
the alcove made for a good destination
had time to hike the short timber creek overlook
great views, very windy, finished in the dark
stayed in hurricane and had dinner at alberto's - good cheap mexican food
always a bonus to get in some new hikes on a travel day :)

Evening hike. The evening sun had the red mountains ablaze. Beautiful.

Got to the traihead about 30 minutes prior to sunrise and started in 10 minutes later. Trail was easy to follow and the water was low in the creek. You are either crossing the creek or in it all the way to Double Arch Alcove. On the way back I realized I had not seen another hiker all morning and I had been hiking for over two hours. About 30 minutes from the trailhead I came upon four rangers hiking in for trail maintenance. I was informed the trail had been closed this morning, just after I started in, because of hornet activity. I was told to hike in the creek bed back to the trailhead. Sure glad I had an early start.

Went to Zion to watch the Annular eclipse, and wanted to get a moderate hike in before staking out a spot to watch. The Kolob canyons are beautiful, though not nearly as remote as the park describes. Right off of I-15, haha. We went out on the quick little overlook trail (maybe ~1 mile), then headed to Taylor Creek. Nice weather and views, saw a couple little canyon tree frogs. Trail was nice and shady, and pretty busy.
