| no partners | | This was a long day that started with early morning in Butler Wash, moved to Hovenweep for much of the afternoon, and finished up back in Bluff. We started this leg with a visit to the Bluff cemetery, hoping to see some of the original settlers graves. They must have been buried elsewhere, or the markers are lost to the ages, since almost all the graves are from later generations. We made sad note of the incidence of child and infant deaths.
Anyway, the Bluff Great House was a good lesson to me of how well nature can disguise even a very large ruin in a short stretch of time. It shouldn't have surprised me, since the site is perfectly situated to collect windblown sand and dust. |
