Parked at Gaylor Trailhead, though I probably could have avoided the entrance fee by parking outside the park boundary.

This trail kicked my pumpkin! Some nice meadows at the beginning and then nothing but UP! The 360 views are so worth it. Absolutely gorgeous in every direction. Storm clouds were moving in so I didn't stay very long.

Made it to the car just in time for a solid rain shower. It started at Tioga Pass and didn't let up until I left Lee Vining. I also left my GPS on the roof of the car when I got back - it was waiting in the middle of the park road for me after a hasty u-turn. :D

yosemite national park has been high on my bucket list forever
denny proposed it for this year's trip and i was in
we had to carry on without johnlp, who is on the disabled list :(
left friday at 0200, taking the route through las vegas this time
we wanted to do something upon arrival, and denny asked if i thought it was crazy to hike mount dana
mt. dana is the second highest peak in yosemite at 13,057
this would be my second 13er
we set out from the tioga pass entry station at 1330 on an unofficial but well defined trail
the first half mile or so is relatively flat, winding through scenic dana lakes
the trail begins to gain elevation and we were soon above treeline
the rest of the hike is exposed, but we had light cloud buildup and cool temps for the ascent
one short snow field to cross
some of the info we found described the final push as scree covered, but it wasn't bad at all
footing was good the entire way, and only a couple spots where we had to search for the trail
no false summit; we could see the peak most of the way
topped out to wonderful 360 views, including all of mono lake to the east
spent about 15 minutes on the peak
a little chilly with a good breeze, so we headed back down
maybe 6-8 people on the trail total
a great summit and an excellent way to start our yosemite trip
not crazy at all :)

Our first trip to Yosemite and our pace setter Johnlp was out with an injury. Get well, my friend. As soon as we entered the park Kelly had us on one of our steepest climbs of the whole trip. You start off hiking among the Dana lakes. It is pretty but short lived as the climbing begins. There are a couple small flat spots but it sure doesn't feel like it. The climb seems to cut you no slack and had me close to crying uncle. we even got to cross a small snow field. No false summit was a welcome bonus to go along with the awesome views. Seeing Mono lake from high above is really cool. The rest of the views aren't to shabby either. We also saw our first of many Marmots we would see while on our trip. Kudo's to Kelly for setting a good pace and getting us up this awesome summit! :y:
