Original plan was get off work 7:30 drive to Antero camp at 11 pm sleep a couple hours and do it in the dark and then drive to Yale. Getting off work around 10 pm changed this plan. Slept at the quarters 3 hours and drove to Denny creek trailhead no 4x4 or camping necessary. Yesterday forecast changed from rain 10 am and tstorms at noon to storms 2 pm. Until I got out late I figured I had time to do both since Antero is basically a walk on a 4x4 trail. I hoped for 5 hours of sleep, but got all the way to getting ready for bed when I figured out I had the work truck and hangar Keys oops! Needless to say 3 am came quick. Drove 3.5 to trailhead and started up the trail. Passed 15 plus on the way to summit one guy was descending as I was finishing. Got a coffee break for 30 on the summit and trail ran the descent passing him about 2/3rds of the way to the bottom. Did take a fall and skinned my hand. Even had to deactivate my watch which wanted to tattle on me to my wife. At least the fall detection works! It took 3+42 total not including the time on the summit. I sweated my brains out because of the rain yesterday and nearly 100% humidity below the treeline. I had to pull a jacket and gloves out 3/4 way to summit which was being intermittently obscured by clouds and still had to find a wind break for coffee. Couldn’t see anything then it cleared up for a few and then became obscured. Started running into quite a few people on way down as all the people I saw earlier had kind of grouped together. Nice views glad I got to do this and beat the weather. The avalanche trail approach looks interesting as well as I caught a view driving out. Felt pretty good today for working 96 hours the last week and 3 hours of sleep even got home before kids got off school!

This was the first hike of a road trip in which I bagged 2 14ers in CO; added 2 state high points (NE and KS); and then on my way back to the Valley I bagged the Greenlee County high point, which is undoubtedly the pinnacle of my hiking career!

Mount Yale is about 10 miles west of Buena Vista; the road to the TH is paved, and the parking lot is even paved. Given the ease of getting to the TH I thought that finding parking might be an issue, but the lot was barely half full. I went on a Thursday, so it might be more crowded on the weekend.

The trail was good and easy to follow. For the first 3 miles of the hike you are in a forest, so views are limited in that stretch. Once you get above the treeline, the views get much better. The hike was tougher than I thought it would be: in the last 2 miles to the summit you gain about 2,200' in altitude. The trail is fairly rocky, and in you are basically doing some stair steps on rock in a few places. The last 1/4 mile to the summit involves some boulder hopping, but it isn't too bad. There are some 360 degree views at the summit, which is nice.

I enjoyed the hike, but it is not among my favorite 14ers in CO, so I doubt if I will do it again.

After a disappointing first day, this was a much needed success. Weather was perfect, trail is in lovely condition, and I felt much better with the altitude. I think this is one of the best 14ers in the Sawatch Range, but the teeming masses of weekday hikers I encountered on my way down the mountain suggest that this is no secret. Many of these people had very poor taste in music, and for some reason thought it was worth sharing with nearby hikers. :sk:

There are a number of good camping options on the road to the Denny Creek TH, but they were nearly full on a Monday night. I got a first-come-first-serve site in the very nice Collegiate Peaks Campground. There are also a few spots to camp along the trail.

This side trip off the Colorado Trail was an example of nearly perfect timing and the HAZ network at its best. Linda and I had talked about maybe meeting up at Mt. Elbert when she was in the area, but I was running a little ahead of schedule and was about 45 minutes down the road in Buena Vista when Linda reached Leadville for a couple of days of hiking and 14ers.

Not to be deterred and needing a little trail support anyways, I suggested Mt. Yale to Linda. She had already did Elbert, so any additional 14er would just be bonus for her and she could also give me a hand getting to the TH and grabbing a few supplies before I hit the trail. Sounded like a "win" "win" to me! We did have to get an early start, so I could get back on the CT that day, but Linda did not mind. Although, it was not as early a wake-up for me, as I was camped very close to the TH.

We made pretty good time up to the main saddle guarding Yale. You still have another 200 feet or so of elevation to gain after this and a little ridgeline scramble, but at 13,900 feet, making it to the saddle pretty much means you are there. Linda kept apologizing for being a little slow, but I assured her that we were probably among the fastest on the mountain that day and that I was running on the advantage of having spent the last two weeks living around 11,000 feet.

The summit was very cool, with some tremendous 360 degree views and a fun little ridgeline and final approach to contend with. Despite a pretty strong cold wind, we enjoyed the summit for a several minutes. We chatted it up with a few locals, snapped a bunch of pictures, tested the 3G and headed back down.

As one could expect when gaining over 4000 feet in four miles, the return trip was quick! I bummed a Gatorade from Linda's cooler, enjoyed a few snacks and had her drop me back off at the same place I had exited the CT the day before. A very cool 14er and near the top of my short list of favorites. Huge HAZ appreciation Linda's way for helping me resupply and sneaking in a "must do" 14er in my opinion!

Yale has the best trail I've seen on 6 14ners, although the 1st half mile is a little rubblely. Nice, but steep. Beautiful views. TH at Denny Creek was half full when we arrived at 7 am. Road is paved all the way out from Buena Vista. Our stats were 5.2 up and 4741 ascent.

I grew up in CT and my grandfather went to Yale. The first time I visited the campus was when I was 5 years old. Throughout the years, I visited many times but it wasn't until I showed my son in 2008 where his Dad and great-grandfather went that I realized life had become a full circle. My grandfather said if anyone asks if you went to Yale you always answer yes. But if they ask if you graduated from there you always tell the turth(as you can see I din't gradgate from Yale). But I did today. It was a great hike. The trail was very wet and I got snowed on a little and rained on a lot. But I had the summit to myself and the thunderstorms held off. One of the descendants of the founder of Yale, graduated from Yale and he also graduated from the same school I graduated from....riddle me that :wrt: s also related to a President and a signer of the Declaration Of Independance. He also founded Skull and Bones and founded a secret soceity at my school...blah...blah...blah.

How many errors can you find?

Denny played a big part in todays hike :? ;)
