This is a spot along the highway that was mentioned in some of the area guidebooks, so thought I would check it out. Hiked about quarter mile up Powder Dump Wash (named in the 1930s due to explosives being stored there during road construction). There is some interesting geology there (**an interpretive brochure is available at the visitor Center in Borrego Springs or at Tamarisk Grove Campground). I didn't wander too far as there were other places on my to do list for the day. The wash I hiked in is minor, with a larger one just to the east (Quartz Vein).

Since this was New Year's Eve, there was a steady stream of RVs coming from coastal areas dropping down Banner Grade along Highway 78, heading for Ocotillo Wells and other desert places to camp and play. I was glad I was staying at Borrego Springs, where things were pretty tame by comparison.

1st trip
Spent the three days after Christmas hiking in this winter wonderland. Not the most scenic desert I've hiked in, but alluring nonetheless. While there I hiked the Mountain Palm Springs Loop, around Agua Caliente CG, Tamarisk Grove CG, and Borrego Springs CG.
