Haven't been up Panther Peak in a while. I enjoy this peak and it's solitude. Nice route up and good views. Did the longer wash loop back to take in some more trails I have not seen in years

Decided to add this to my summer fitness hike rotation. The entire gully climb was shaded! The trail is in excellent condition and very thoughtfully cairned. Only in the gully for very short stretches mostly at the beginning of the climb. Most of the routing is to the right.

It’s a pleasant climb, wish it were a tad shorter on the wash to get to the climb. A very nice morning!

Not enough time to do Wasson so I hiked Panther from the picnic area and the Roadrunner Trail to see if Panther could be a suitable replacement for Sombrero. Panther is pretty overgrown and eroded, with the last storm being yesterday and pretty substantial judging by the roads over here. Panther has a fraction of the Sombrero Logs, and maybe the trail conditions are why.

Mike was kind enough to pick me up, and we hiked Sex Panther with his friend from Sahuarita. I was able to summit, Mike made the saddle, and Loni got about 1/3 of the way to the saddle from the wash. Great views from the summit, and only a mild raw gasoline smell.

Spotted someone on the summit of Sombrero, which was fun. I waved and yelled, they didn't wave back.

It had been 7 years since I was last here, but I remembered a lot of it once out hiking. Seemed easier than I believed it was.

Well I made it to the saddle and planned on going to the peak, but then received a confusing text message about a 911 call. Needed to hike down the mountain to rescue a confused friend, and his dog, who consumed a bit too much wine that day (the friend, not the dog). The lesson to be learned here is always bring water, never drink before a hike, and stay calm at all times. Don't dial 911 unless it's truly an emergency. Sorry to Jim for having to put with this. The friend did apologize and we thank him for his service in Iraq!!

Since I didn't get to Panther Peak on my Safford Peak hike the other week I decided to do that today. I started out at the scenic road trail head and took the Pack Rat, Passe Trail and Scenic trail to the Safford Peak Trail because I've never been on them and I was trying to make this hike in the 10 mile range. Took the Safford Peak Trail to the saddle where I continued north on a trail that would lead to the north approach to Panther Peak. Once on Panther Peak I descended down the south side to Panther Wash and returned making a loop to the west and north of Panther Peak. Once at the junction with the north approach route to Panther peak I returned kind of the same route I took in.

The Pack Rat and Passe Trails are not trails you would put on your list of trails to do, these are more of walks for people who live in the area that do a daily routine of walking. The Scenic Trail is the trail used if you are heading to Safford Peak. Took the Safford Peak Trail up to a saddle where I continued north on the trail while the Safford Peak Trail continues west going up. I'm not sure what this north bound trail is called but it follows along a ridge that overlooks Sanctuary Cove to the northeast. From the saddle the trail becomes a route down the west side of the ridge to the Saguaro National Park fence and gate. At this point there is a well defined trail, North (private Property) leads to the white stallion Ranch (I believe) and to the west along the Park boundary. This route down the west side of the ridge looks like it use to be a trail but has since been decommissioned, watch closely and you can follow the old trail, very faint and occasionally marked by cairns. Once at the gate, follow the well defined trail to the junction with the North approach route to Panther Peak. There is a Rock Cairn at this location but having a GPS route will aid in locating this junction.

The hike up the north approach to Panther was easier than I thought though it is steep and involves hand and foot climbing in a few places. The route was well marked with cairns and easy to follow, I'm sure that is what made the difference between this being a very difficult route to just a really good workout. Once at the saddle the climb to Panther peak is along a well defined route, still steep but no scrambling is required. Great views from the peak, I think better than Safford Peak. The recent storm left the air clean and made for great views.

On the return I headed down the south slope to Panther Wash, This route is not as steep as the north approach but it is not as clearly marked. A GPS route is handy. Lots of loose rock so the going was slow. Really can't decide weather I would prefer the north or south approach to Panther Peak, I keep vacillating as to which I would rather do. Once in Panther Wash I headed up stream to make the loop around Panther Peak and back to the where the north approach route heads up to Panther Peak. Can't find a name for this trail so I just called it the Panther Peak Loop. About a third of this trail is in Panther Wash and about a third along what looks like it use to be a road but is now just a wide trail. The last third where the trail heads east is along a well defined trail eventually ending up at the gate to White Stallion Ranch where I was earlier in the day.

Great hike with some Ho Hum parts, some really great sections with either a good work out or exceptional views and a section of just walking to get you from point A to Point B. This hike turned out to be 10.1 miles but probably would have only been 9.9 had I not forgot my cover (hat for you civilians) about .1 miles in and returned to get it.

First trip up Panther. The trail from the wash must have received some maintenance, as it is pretty well defined all the way up. If you follow my GPS track, do it as a backtrack as we got a little off on the ascent, but followed the cairned path all the way down. Great view from the top. Wish I had brought binoculars to inspect the ridge during the ascent.

Got in a good after work Birthday hike, thought I would nail two peaks! Got an early start about 2:45 or so with fantastic cloud cover, could not have had much better weather for this one. I parked well north of Sanctuary Cove, they have some new nasty no parking signs just south of the little asphalt roundabout, so I parked up there and walked down the road. Made my way clockwise since I did CCW last time. The trail-ish up to Safford was better than I remember, made pretty good time. The wind kicked into gale force just as I was coming to the top of the peak to make the rock hop a little more interesting, but nothing too serious. Picked my way across to Panther Peak, I stayed with the over the top route for the most part just to add in some more climbing/ bouldering fun. I avoided taking any harm until I was climbing down the drainage from Pather and I got hooked on a Catclaw, but that one got me good. Tore up my leg and arm a bit, just flesh wounds...somehow doesn't seem right to do this one without donating back to the desert. Picked up a ton of Bursage in my boots going across the flat area just for added enjoyment. I though I would be able to do this one a little quicker since it was much cooler than my July hike last year, but it ended up making no difference. Good times again!

Chosen for it's location at the north end of the range and my need to use my Parks Pass, this did not disappoint for views or being warm, relative to cold north aspects. A cairned trail has emerged for the entire route to the peak from the wash, about 100 feet shy of the wire fence across the wash.

Winter continental air clarity and distance views were out today, with even the Valley appearing to be clean, as the Supes and the Flatiron were clear. A really great afternoon.

Great hike! We have not hiked in this area before and I was glad that I had my GPS out when finding the parking pull off for this trail, we did not notice any signs... There may have been some trail work in this area since the description was written? (I noticed that a proposed Panther Peak Trail is in the information here http://www.nps.gov/sagu/parkmgmt/upload/FONSI.pdf - but no idea if this is related in any way, the trail we took up just seems much more established than the description here?) In sight of a fence that comes into Panther Wash a large cairn and easy to follow trail leaves the wash on the right and heads towards the gully - this is likely further up the wash than you would go if just taking a bushwhack direct route - the trail has a good number of cairns, is easy to follow and the walking is very pleasant (quite beautiful - green desert with small flowers growing is spots). The trail gets a slightly more vague as you enter the gully but there was a very clean route marked by cairns up to the saddle and an easy to follow trail up from the saddle. Great views!! It was stormy the day we went up and watching the clouds and rain in the distance was great. Pictures: http://www.flickr.com/photos/cmiles/sets/72157632957086911/

Fantastic bushwhack up to Panther. On my desert ramble to the base of the gulley I passes through a meadow of lupine, thousands of them....awesome!

Met a fellow HAZ member, Aaron on the summit. May have found a new partner for some local death marches. That was cool.
