Day trip up to Clifton/Morenci where I had some business at the mine.
After the mine, spent several hours touring Clifton with visits to -
The historic train station (visitor center)
Clifton cliff jail
Chase Creek historic business district
Several antique shops
Museum
San Francisco river/bridge
I then headed back up to Morenci and a drive through the 2nd largest hole in AZ aka the Freeport-McMoran open pit copper mine ..... always quite a sight to behold!
Total overcast with rain fell on me the entire day, but I wanted to get some kind of a hike in and drove up the Coronado Trail (in the clouds) to Chase Creek Gorge for a quickie. Only made it a bit up before the rain became too much, but got to see the lower portion of the gorge ..... Awesome!
Then made the cloudy, gloomy, rainy, foggy drive back to Safford.
Fun day in copper country!

Start of a long 5 day road trip in search of autumn scenes. Day one was from Tucson to Springerville via the venerable Coronado Trail (US191/666..your choice). Got treated to a fair number of bighorn around the huge Morenci mine and noticed for the first time the grave sites of the Old Morenci Mexican Cemetery on the hillside as I wound my way up to Granville.
Beautiful and powerful area.

This was a waterfall hunting trip into a very rugged little spot. I had previously explored the upper end of the Gorge in January 2008. Chase Creek was flowing nicely today, and the air was warm. No huge waterfalls in here, just short and pretty ones.
