Wednesday September 1st - This was a 26th Wedding Anniversary present to Lynn taking advantage of the Grande Colonial Hotel's (see => https://www.thegrandecolonial.com/ ) "3-for-2" offer. Booked a King Ocean View room for 3 nights, dogs booked into the kennels at Ahwatukee Commons Veterinarian Hospital and we were booked on the road by 8am heading towards the I-8 and San Diego! Gas and Burger King in Yuma was the only stop and we were soon greeted by Jeffery the Doorman at the Grande Colonial. Jeffery marshals our bags into Room 523, definitely a primo room with a view. An afternoon stroll along the La Jolla waterfront checking out the beaches and tide pools until the sun sank into the Pacific...
Thursday September 2nd - Dawn gives us a seaside foggy morning (so much for that room with a view). We have tea, coffee, and morning snacks at the Living Room Cafe which also seems to be an institution with the locals. Now having an adequate amount of caffeine pumping through my veins, a morning stroll with Lynn and the Rebel XT plus 10-22mm wide angle is in order. Prospect Street to the intersection with Park Street/Row (just before the traffic lights at Torrey Pines Road) and take the steps down towards La Jolla Bay and the Coastal Walkway. We are at the foot of the La Jolla Sea Caves as we head west along the Coastal Walkway towards the Cave Store (see => https://www.cavestore.com/ ) and La Jolla Cove. Seals and pelicans are occupying almost all available rocks. The first sea kayakers of the day are launching from the Cove. Lynn and I enter Ellen Browning Scripps Park where workers are disassembling the lighted stage, sound system, chairs, and tables from a large charity event held the night before. Waves are crashing over Alligator Head providing some photo ops. We move south along to Boomer Beach and up and over to the Children's Pool to check out the very entertaining harbour seals. Continue south to Coast Boulevard Park, Nicholson Point Park, Neptune Park, and La Jolla Strand Park at Neptune Place. When we reach Palomar Avenue at Neptune Place, we decide it's time to turn back towards the Grande Colonial Hotel. Lunch hour will be spent at MCASD, the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (see => https://www.mcasd.org/ ). I thought the most compelling exhibit was the landscape memories featuring photos from Sedona, Zion, Anza Borrego, White Sands, and Bonneville Salt flats. Back to the hotel where I assembled my "treat" I picked up at Tempe Camera; a Canon EOS 7D DSLR with EF70-200mm F/2.8L IS II USM lens while Lynn plotted a course north up the coast to investigate beaches and seaside towns. Soon departed for our Beach Drive with multiple stops; La Jolla Shores, Torrey Pines, Del Mar, Solana, Cardiff, Encinitas, Leucadia, Carlsbad, and Oceanside. With the sun sinking once again into the Pacific, it was time to make our way back on the South Coast Highway 101. Back in La Jolla, it's time to check out one of the new eateries in town; the Karl Strauss Brewing Company. Good eats, great beer, fantastic combo on par with Four Peaks Brewery or Beaver Street Brewery. Belgian Trippel and Padre Porter made my "fave" list...
Friday September 3rd - Room Service wake-up at 6:30am followed by a beach walk south to Neptune Park Beach (aka Marine Street Beach). We take the side streets back to the Grande Colonial where we grab the beach chairs and other supplies and head back to a choice beach site north of Nicholson Point. We set up the chairs planning to spend the rest of the day relaxing. I dive into one of the books on my reading list, "Switch" by the Heath brothers (see => https://heathbrothers.com/switch/ ). As the sun sets, Lynn and I agree that a "redux" at the Karl Strauss Brewing Company is in order...
Saturday September 4th - 4:30am wake-up call and we're on the road by 5am. Need to be at the kennels before noon or the dogs are in "lock-down" until Tuesday morning. No coffee available in La Jolla at this hour! Drive is uneventful and Skippy and Chrissy are more than happy to see us...
