Star Peak (elevation of 9,836 feet and prominence of 5,400 feet) is in a remote area in north-central Nevada. Star Peak is the highpoint of Pershing County and it is a typical Great Basin Peak with low growing vegetation and impressive vistas.

Even though Star Peak is in a remote area, it is easier to get to than some of the other Great Basin Peaks. We drove about 3 miles off of an I-80 frontage road into Eldorado Canyon to a dilapidated cabin at about 5,700 feet of elevation. Most SUV's could make it that far but I'd recommend a 4WD vehicle to go further. We drove almost 2 miles and parked at 7,100-7,200 of elevation. The road steepened from there, and I'm talking almost Thompson Peak steep in places. We came out there to hike, so we did not mind stopping where we did.

The hike is along a road that goes virtually all the way to the summit. There are nice views along the way, and I thought that this was an enjoyable hike. There is lots of sun exposure, so I would not want to do this one in the summertime, even starting early.

On the way down we met someone who was hiking up who said that he drove his CRV to about 7,000 feet, not too far below where we parked. He said that he scraped bottom a couple of times, and I imagine that he rode his brakes pretty hard on the drive down.
