I walked up the Manitou Incline, all 2,768 steps. Then took the Barr trail down roughly 3 miles to the bottom. I could not find any free parking anywhere near the incline so I just parked down by the Manitou Elementary school. Some locals told me that there are no restrictions on the alleyway behind the school, so I parked there, then walked West toward Ruxton Ave, and went up from there. When I got to the incline, I saw many people there, going up and others coming down. It was a relatively busy area that probably gets hikers all year round, even when it's near freezing. I started up the incline. Many of the stairs were railroad ties, sometimes stacked 2 high. Every time I passed an interval of 100, I saw a metal tag on the step that indicated the step count. The temps had to be around 32 degrees and I saw some crazy people wearing shorts and one guy without a shirt on. I don't know how they do it in that climate. I was wearing a T-shirt + a flannel shirt + a heavy leather jacket and jeans.

Anyway, I rested a few times along the way and made it to the top in about 1 hr 30 minutes if you take out breaks. At the top of the steps was a decorated tree and someone offered to take a few pics of me at the top. From here, I decided to take the Barr trail down. The Barr trail was very well maintained and not steep at all. The Barr trail had some nice shade in many places and some wooden fences/railings along the way.

Some people went down the stairs on the incline but it seemed very monotonous and probably hard on the knees. I saw a few people walking down the steps backwards, which looked strange and quite dangerous. They said it was better on the knees. But, if they tripped doing that it would be a bad fall, I'm sure. Anyway, I made pretty good time going down the Barr trail. Along the way there were a few signs. I can't imagine taking the Barr trail all the way to Pikes Peak. I believe it was 11.5 or 12 miles to the top and something like 7,200 feet AEG. A really difficult hike. I think if I try to hike to Pikes peak someday, I would attempt it from the West side which is only a round trip of something like 12 miles.

FYI - My Strava app took a dump and gave me scattered random points for the final 1/3 of the incline. When I got to the top I was able to start a new GPS track going down the Barr trail. Then, I joined the 2 tracks together and did some minor editing. I believe my stats are correct.

My Stats (based on my starting point):
---------
Distance (round trip) = 7.11 miles
AEG = 2,417 feet
Strava moving time = 1 hr 35 mins (up) + 1 hr 39 mins (down Barr trail)
Strava elapsed time = 2 hrs 24 mins (up) + 2 hrs 10 mins (down Barr trail)

This hike has been on my list for a while. The NO DOGS allowed rule, has prevented me from hiking this trail(and other cool trails in the area.)
It was a great morning hike. It really gets the blood flowing. Maybe it was a good thing my Miss Ellie wasn't here. She would have destroyed my time to the top.

Trying to find novel activities to occupy the 4 year old before his preschool reopens next week. I told him it would be tough he packed Pirates Booty and goldfish. He also offered to carry the pack since I’m not allowed any weight on the right side. This activity was probably not medically approved and I may have gotten a slight tongue lashing by my wife, but I needed to get out and with the promise of a thin mint girlscout avalanche from the Colorado custard company my boy was all in. We took breaks in the shade. He got encouragement and surprise from everyone we passed and at the top he threw his hands up in a V and when everyone cheered he threw a hilarious impromptu bow and ran off to climb a particularly enticing rock before running back for his summit photo. The trip down the Barr Trail was uneventful and we made it back in time to meet sister at the bus stop. When asked if he was ever interested in doing the hike again w/out hesitation he said he would like to do it anytime if we can have custard afterwards. The thin mint avalanche will remain a secret from his sister. :)

Dropped off M and N and headed to do Incline. Supposed to hit 90 today and it was already hot. Passed several Fireman and Military in full garb honoring 911 first responders. They had a large flag at the top. Ran down Barr trail.

Been digging this lately because it is convenient after dropping off my kid. I made it up in 37 min. Apparently, this was due to not having my 35 lb kid on my back which was an 8 min. Improvement. The incline is more of a breathing excercise than workout. It takes concentration on breathing to get enough oxygen to feed the muscles to go up the 2768 steps to the top. I tried unsuccessfully to break an hour up and down coming in at 1:02 total. I think it will be easier to cut two min. going up than two minutes running the 3.5 down. The Barr trail is really rocky and slick and I already fell once recently. Now I have something to shoot for next time.

Picked M from School dropped off her school bag at the truck and headed toward the Incline. Nice weather not busy. Micah did great! It took her 1:15 minutes not too bad for being 6 and her first time. We hiked down Barr Trail and had a frozen custard before meeting Sarrah and Noah for Dinner.

My wife’s first time, I carried my 35 lb. 3 year old all the way up and down and he napped most of the way. My time up with him on my back was the same as the first time I did it about five years ago. Great day and weather. Unfortunately on the way down my wife slipped on the Barr trail and Broke her wrist. I ran ahead to get vehicle which was parked on the other side of town and she had to hike about two miles down Barr trail. I picked her up and took her to ER. Surgery this week no bueno.

Extended my business trip to Colo. Springs through Saturday so I could get out and hit a bit of the trails in the area. Settled on the Incline as one of the iconic trails in the area. It's like a one mile stair-climber. Nearly 2,000 aeg in 1 mile. I would not have wanted to be the guy taking rail cars down the Incline back in the day--not sure I could have that much faith in the breaking system ....

Great work out, great views, and beautiful weather. At the top, we took the connector over to the Barr Trail for a more leisurely descent.

I'll be back next summer to continue on to Pike's Peak!

The gps track I just posted is for a loop up the very, very steep incline (an old Cog route) above Manitou Springs and down the Barr trail. There is an out to the Barr trail to return about 2/3 of the way up, if you don't feel like doing the entire 2000 feet climb. Great workout. The best thing I can add is to advise hikers to go to the upper Hiker Parking lot, which is past the Cog Railway complex. A lot of people, including me, will park below the complex at walk up to the trailhead. Go past the Railway Depot for the Cog, and turn right just past the Hydro Plant Building. The Cog trailhead is to the right and the Barr (if you're going to the top of Pikes Peak)to the left. You still have to pay but at least you start at the TH.

My brother in law has been bugging me to do the Incline. The gutter people postponing until yesterday to finish work the previous owner paid for thwarted my big plan and we have family visiting for the rest of the time. :y: Anyway, I agreed on the condition we added some side sightseeing to the hike. Finally found a free place to park on the other side of town, but it goes past several of the 11 public Springs for which Manitou got it's name. Manitou was basically a victorian spa in it's heyday. Some of the most notable springs pictured in the photoset have been restored. They all have different mineral content, but most are naturally carbonated and quite tasty. They are free to the public so I brought a couple gallon bottles and took some home. :D There is info. on Mineral content etc. at this link:
http://manitoumineralsprings.org/information/
So we sampled a few on the way up and caught a couple on the way back to the car. Didn't get up the incline any faster than last time so I punished myself by running the Barr Trail down.
It took me less time to run the 3 miles down than it did to do the mile up. :( Good day nice to get out with Kris and it was interesting to learn a little more history of the area.

All the springs were flowing except the Ute Chief Springs. :sl: I'm drinking some Stratton Springs right now! :sl:

:y: AWESOME DAY!
It started with my wife dropping me off on the highway 24 near the Manitou exit. I visited the Rainbow Falls picnic area on the way down. It would be very nice if it didn't seem to be a teenage hangout as evidenced by all the graffiti. :yuck: Then walked through Manitou and up Ruxton to do the Incline.
The plan was to do the incline to see what the hype was about and then find out where the Ring to Peak trail connects and follow it home. I was disappointed to find that it connects at the bottom of the incline and basically follows the 24 all the way to Cascade. Boo! So then I decided to connect to the Barr Trail up to the Barr Camp and find out if there was a trail leading to the Pikes Peak Toll road to connect up to the RTPT there. I packed everything I needed to Summit Pikes Peak if the need arose, but I'll get to that later.

The Incline:
I can't believe there is a club of people that do this thing everyday before work all year round. I'm sure they are in fantastic shape! 2100' AEG in 1 mile of railroad ties. With a false summit. My ego wouldn't let me be passed, but all I heard all the way up was negative exhausted people wondering why they were doing it and the occasional unprepared person puking on the side of the trail. All I could do was tell myself left right left right and look for footing because it is pretty rough in places. In fact, they don't really want people walking down it so the only bail out is .9 miles up where you can catch the Barr trail down. It made me question my fitness even though I have stayed in pretty good shape. I was told by a buddy whose brother got 4th place last year in the Pikes Peak Marathon that Apollo Ohno hopped it on one leg and ran down the Barr trail and then hopped it on the other leg during his training for the Olympics. :wlift: That's just Crazy! Even if I did this thing every day I could never find it fun.

Barr Trail to the Barr camp: I made pretty good time from the bottom of the incline to the Barr camp. It's roughly 4,000' elevation gain and the incline takes off about 1.5 miles of the 6 miles. I inquired about the conditions to the summit because there has been 3 rescues in 3 days and a lot of snow and I was supposed to do this on Saturday with a person who is fit, but lacks a lot of hiking experience and planned to take the Cog railway down. They said the trail is covered for the last 4 miles and knee to waist post holing in snow for those 4 miles. I had my spikes, but didn't bring the snowshoes, but I got to the camp so early I considered it. I asked them about trails to the toll road and they said the Elk run is 5 miles and gets close, but is post holing for the last mile. I decided to do this back home.

Barr camp provides bunks for $20 a night has food and water that can be filtered from a spring. FYI

The people manning the Barr camp do not know anything. FYI :o

Had I known on my way to my house that I would be post holing roughly 8 miles on and off during the trip home, I would have done the summit and gotten a ride from my wife from the same point she dropped me off when she got off work. :D But I would have missed out on the Views! Views! Views! and seeing a completely different side of the mountain in utter Solitude! :y:

I took the Elk Run trail to the 652 to the Oil creek Tunnel trail and from then on until I reached the RTPT to Mt. Esther I'd be lying if I gave you any names. :D In looking at my gps topo I passed most notably the Devil's Playground. I thought the oil creek Tunnel might get me to the toll road, but it dumped me into a trail that traversed albeit through snow a huge expanse of granite gravel slopes across several peaks. It was at this point that I decided to consult the gps. I looked at Poi's for reference. What I wanted was Crowe Gulch to find RTPT and the Pikes Peak highway. Unfortunately, I could not get the highway to populate. It was 4 miles away through trail less wilderness. Glen Cove picnic area was .68 of a mile away, but on the otherside of one of the Peaks I was looking at. Probably 1.5 miles and some elevation gain on this trail. I knew it had to be close to the toll road, but my fear was that it would be a 5-13 mile walk to Crowe Gulch on the toll road or a hitch hike. I opted for the 4 miles through trail less wilderness and on looking at the track when I loaded it for stats I made the right choice. :D I did have to navigate several drainages and peaks to finally get to the road. It rained for the last 3 miles, but I didn't mind. I got home at 5:15 for a nice day. Just short of 10 hrs. from the time I started the Incline. It does mean that a summit from my house would be about 30 miles so I think maybe i'll do the Barr trail the first time. About half of the day was spent above 10,000' and a portion of that was above 11,000'. I felt pretty good considering I've only been home for a few days and it takes awhile after spending two weeks at sea level. My elevation gain and miles were just short of what doing the Barr trail would be and I was happy with how early I got home considering how much un tracked knee deep snow traversing I had to do. :D

51 minutes to the top today. I could have done it in a few minutes less than that though. I stopped a couple times to let people catch up and once to give some water to a guy that I overheard saying that he didn't bring any! A girl got seriously hurt there today. she had sprained or broken her ankle. She had either hurt it on the incline trail or running down the Barr Trail (its popular for trail runners). She was on the Barr Trail near where the incline and Barr Trail meet up; a rescue team had to come get her and carry her down.
There was a bit of snow and ice in patches on some spots but overall the trail was pretty clean. I did it easily with fresh hiking boots and no crampons.

It took us 59 mins to the top. we went at a pretty slow pace which was nice because we didnt have to keep stopping like we did the first time. We took the long way down this time by catching up with the Barr trail at the top of the incline. Its safer that way. haha. It's gonna be interesting to attempt this one in the winter.
