Solo hike since everyone else wanted to sleep in. Got started a little before 0630 and headed east on the Virgin River Rim Trail on the west side of Navajo Lake. Gradual uphill through the trees on a nice trail, saw lots of deer and a family of turkeys.

Signage was odd at a jct about 1.50 miles in. I know I was on the VRR trail, but it sort of indicated Navajo Lake Loop as well. Not that it mattered to me, I knew where I was going, but it definitely makes the far west end of the Navajo Lake Loop confusing at best. Anyway, continuing east on the VRR trail, there was some deadfall to contend with, but overall a very nice trail. Views off the edge of the rim were limited, I wish the trail had stayed closer to the edge, but I walked over a few times to peer to the south. Deadfall obscured the trail for about a hundred feet above The Saddle, but it was pretty easy to pick it back up again.

Once at the east end of the lake (which was far below me), I headed north on Dike Trail and downhill towards the lake. Easy downhill. Once just above the southeast corner of the lake, my options were to take the south side of the Navajo Lake loop back west, or to curve around and take the north side of the loop west. Since I wanted to walk through the lava beds, I opted for the north side of the lake. The north side also has less people, since there’s no road or campgrounds on that side.

Fun walk through the lava beds, I wish that part had lasted longer, then an easy, mostly level walk just above the north shore of the lake. Lots of trees and lake views. Once again, the far west end of the loop was vague and poorly signed. The trail seemed to go to Te-ah Campground, right through one of the campsites, then sort of disappeared. I just followed the campground road out the entrance, then a few hundred feet of road walk back to my starting point. Good luck to anyone attempting that full loop without a map.

Rain started less than five minutes after I finished hiking. Nice loop, I would do more in this area. Only saw three bikers, nobody else.
