I went out with a couple friends on a night 4x4 run. We took Table Mesa Road from I-17 to Seven Springs Road. Somehow I convinced them to do a night hike, through a cholla field, up to the New River ruins. We hung out at the top for over an hour, then headed back to the 4x4 trail.

This was a fun short hike. The road to the trailhead was in good condition, and you definitely need a high clearance vehicle. There are many ruts in the road, some moderate sized rocks to dodge. I had no problems in my Escape. I parked at N33 57.777 W112 03.593, a small lot off the side of the road. The ruins are at N33 57.877 W112 03.907.

You will be bushwhacking to achieve this peak. So prepare clothing and tools as appropriate. I would recommend leather boots and a pliers as your gear. In my attempt up, I picked a line of ascent on the South ridge as it looked less steep. This turned out to be a mistake due to the preponderance of cholla. Ouch. Ouch.

As you reach the peak, there is an easy way to the summit at N33 57.874 W112 03.888. This will become easy to spot as you get higher. Once there, enjoy the ruins and great views. On the way down, my route was more to the west and south and gingerly picked my way down a trail that was almost social. I avoided most of the cholla.

I was reading something when I got back from this trip, that stated you need a permit for Table Mesa RD. Im not sure if this was true, or where you need the permit. If I go back to this area, I will research more information.

I started the trip at the New River Ruins site. It was very windy today. This wind helped fuel the surprise attacks from the jumping Cholla. They came out of nowhere. Luckily the Cholla are only near the bottom. A few minutes into the hike, I realized I didnt change into my hiking boots. This did cause some problems on the way up. Needles go right through tennis shoes. Near the top it becomes slightly more difficult. You have to do some rock climbing. I stayed at the top 40+ minutes. Looking for pottery, sitting on the edge admiring the view, and taking shelter in one of the ruins to get out of the wind. From the top, looking East, I noticed a rock pile that might be more ruins. I had another site I wanted to go visit today, since I was here, I decided to check out this possible ruin site. I got back into my truck and drove about 1/2 to the next "trailhead". This hike is a similar climb. There are some parts near the top where you have to climb up. I then hiked toward the rock pile. No ruins here.... Just a natural pile of rocks on top of a small mesa. I then looked at my GPS, to see if the next mesa to the East was worth taking a look. I guess it was. I did a 5 mile loop at the top of the New River Mesa. No real elevation gain or obstacles. Walking through tall grass. I was watching for snakes during this loop. A squirrel did scare me when I startled it and it ran away. Not planning on this portion of the trip, I didnt put enough sunscreen on. I did get a bit toasted.
After that I got back in my truck and explored some of the 4x4 roads on both sides of I-17.

I hiked up to the New River ruins with two friends using the directions from Dave Wilson's book, "Hiking Ruins Seldom Seen, 2nd ed". We drove east on the dirt road (Table Mesa rd) from exit 236 on I-17 for 0.9 mi and then turned left through a gate. There was some confusion at this point because Dave Wilson's book says there is a sign at this gate marking the entrance to state trust land and that you are supposed to have written permission from the State Land Department to enter. There was no sign and we thus assumed no permission was required, just close the gate after you pass through. The road was in good condition through the New River bed upto a rock quarry. From that point on it started getting progressively worse with a deeply rutted section and some very rocky sections. High ground clearance and possible 4 wheel drive are required from this point on. We parked at a parking area on the southeast side of the ruin mountain approximately 5 road miles from I-17 where there is a Tonto National Forest information kiosk. GPS N33.96282/W112.05980. I posted a GPS track for the drive from I-17 to this location which may reduce some confusion at road intersections.

There is no trail to the hilltop so you must pick your own route up the hill through a dense thicket of the dreaded Teddy Bear Cholla. There were thousands of Cholla puff balls littering the ground which would get stuck to the side of your boot and then get transferred to the calf of your opposite leg as you step forward. If the barbs make it through your pant leg into your skin they can be very painful to remove. Long pants are a must. However, if you take your time and are careful at picking your path you can avoid direct contact with these spined monsters. The Cholla thins out as you get nearer the top.

The flat hill top is surrounded by a cliff which can look somewhat insurmountable if your not in to rock climbing. However there is a notch in the cliff on the south west side visible from the parking area which can be climbed with careful selection of hand and foot holds by those of us who are unskilled in rock climbing. There are supposed to be some petroglyphs on the rock walls along this notch but we were running short of time so I only glanced at the rock walls and all I saw were modern petroglyphs/graffiti. The ruins have a number of rock walled rooms. The walls have mostly grumbled down to a height of a couple of feet. There is one complete four walled room with doorway approximately 3 to 4 feet high but the top 1 to 2 feet appears to have been from a restoration. The views were fantastic as they usually are from these Hohokum fortified hilltop sites. I was surprised at how close we were to the northern Phoenix - Cave Creek area.

Was not sure how to post this hike as it was in the New River area, but does not sound like some of the other posts. There are numerous ruins sites in this general area. I joined 8 others from the Desert Awareness Committee. We turned North off of Carefree Hwy on to New River Rd and then right on Circle Mountain Rd and finally a left or N on 12th St. At dead end of the road we followed a jeep road to 20th Street dead end and followed the road as it turned N/E toward a small hill. No housing ruins at the top of this hill but loads of Petroglyph's. Thinking now that I should have noted the GPS coordinates for others....next time. Interesting for me to see Elephant Butte in the Spur Cross area from the North or backside.

Thought this was going to be a short quick trip. With our recent rains the New River is actually a river so a short trip turned into eight miles.

Had a 6 mile loop planned, but iffy road conditions made it closer to 9.
Hiked up to the ruins from the South, and then down the north side of the peak. From there we walked the road a short distance then climbed up to West Point. From West Point we hiked East accross the saddle, up to New River Mesa, then NE accross the corner of the mesa to an old jeep track. We followed the jeep track back down to Table Mesa rd, and then followed Table Mesa rd down to New River. From There we followed a pack trail downstream along the river a couple miles and then back out onto Table Mesa rd and back to the car.

My Murano wasn't doing so well on this road, so I parked about 2.5 miles in and added some milage to the hike. The trip is decribed very well in Dave Wilson's, "Hiking Ruins Seldom Seen" book. Following the road to the cattle guard and corral, it's basically a free bushwack up the side of the prominant rocky hill on the side of the trail. DEFINITELY wear pants for this one. I actually tried to continue on FR 41 to the southeast side of the hill a few days ago- not recommended, the bushwack is much worse (the Teddy Bear Cholla is very thick). The best route is following the barbed wire fence (start on the left of the corral) to the top. The footing is a bit sketchy at times, be especially careful on the way down! I have a good-sized bruise on my rear to prove it. There is a neat spiral petroglyph about 15 feet to the left at the end of the first barbed wire fence. There are a few more petroglyphs on the north side of the base of the rock, and a couple that I saw on the south side near the top. The easiest rock scramble to the top is probably on the south side of the rock, but you will need to do more bushwacking to get there. I didn't have any trouble climbing up the north side, but think the south side is probably the easiest way down. On top there are multiple obvious rooms, 1 especially well preserved. There are mutiple piles of potsherds at the top, and I saw quite a few around the base as well. A word of caution, there is a sign that warns that ATV's and sport shooting is prohibited, but I saw several groups of both this weekend, and there are spent shells everywhere along the road.

Barb and I hiked this. This was our first ruins hike. This was worth the short drive from Phoenix.
