Full day in Escalante area - originally had Coyote Gulch pegged, but figured it would be a far less than idea time of year to do a water hike, so I decided to hit the Dry Fork slots and start working my way back towards town. Started at the upper trailhead, jogged down to Dry Fork. The main Dry Fork slot was OK-ish. Originally planned on starting up Peek-a-boo, but after a couple of annoyingly difficult scrambles, I decided it would be better done top-to-bottom, so I decided to start heading down towards Brimstone.

There was another short slot in Dry Fork past the turnoff to Spooky, which I thought looked more impressive than the main Dry Fork narrows. Shortly before the turn up Brimstone Gulch, I encountered an older Japanese guy just wandering around, I told him I was heading to Brimstone and he said he wanted to come along. OK, this would probably slow me down a bit, but it's fine. After what seemed like a mile, got to the Brimstone slot, which was actually quite tall and narrow, and IMO the prettiest of the slots in the Dry Fork area. Eventually it was just a few inches wall-to-wall, preventing further travel (and it was getting hard to see).

So, turned around and started heading back up to Spooky, which was next. Spooky also got super narrow, and I had to take off my hydration pack and go sideways for some stretches. This one was just really fun to go through.

Then, over to Peek-a-boo, which was pretty short in comparison, and the most interesting part was the lower stretch that I had already seen. Somewhere in here I dropped the Japanese dude, who I think hung back with the couple I had seen in the parking lot. Then hiked back out, for a total of 10 miles or so, which was more than anticipated.

Headed back up the road and stopped at Devil's Garden, which I had to myself, for a quick beverage and walkabout.

Then found the TH for Zebra and Tunnel, which is obvious but unmarked. After the first mile or so, Halfway Hollow started getting pretty scenic. Then on the way up the Zebra wash, I picked up my second hanger-on of the day. Got to a point in Zebra where I'd have to get a little creative to make further progress, so turned around (I think one could go 50-100 feet farther though). Headed up the crossover to Tunnel, and hanger-on was still following. He didn't seem to have any clue where he was going, so I had to keep him in sight. Really liked the traverse over the slickrock and down into the canyon. The slot itself is very short, but unique. And there was knee-deep frigid water, fun.

On the way back, made sure the hanger-on made it as far as Halfway Hollow, and figured my responsibility ended at that point, so was able to jog a little of the way back up.

Overall, really fun day, and a good introduction to the area, which I definitely now have near the top of my list of places to return to soon.

This starts off as a sandy, exposed trail that leads to a wash type area (dry). The geology on the approach to the slot was super unique and interesting. Upon arrival at the slot, we met a couple who were leaving and told us we’d need to remove packs to fit through the slot. They also let us know it was very tight in several places.

Becky and I started off prior to the rest of the group and pretty much immediately realized we definitely needed to remove and stow away our packs. There is an extremely narrow area right in the beginning that requires you to step sideways with your feet bent outwards and just shimmy your way through. FYI - It was tight so anyone that’s larger build (especially if not tall) may not fit though.

We continued on in the slot and were just completely blown away by the striped canyon walls. They were absolutely stunning. A small group of 3 entered just behind us and someone from that group gave me a slight boost up one tricky section. We continued through the canyon until a final tricky scramble that had a gorgeous view back down the slot canyon. We could not continue after that point as there was a keeper pothole too dangerous to maneuver around without rope.

The rest of our group joined us then Becky and I headed back to get our packs and rest/snack up for the hike out. The hike out was hot, exposed and sandy. We were thankful for an earlier start time this day as we were able to get finished, back to camp to pack up and on the road back to phx by noon!

Zebra was a stunner! Loved it!

Nice hike out to Zebra & Tunnel Slot canyons. Despite the trail being unmarked and unsigned, it is very well traveled and easy to follow. The trailhead (also unmarked) is 12 miles from UT-12. You pass a cattle guard, park in a large gravel lot on the right, and cross the street to hike. There is a sign that collecting is not allowed and a warning sign about extreme temperatures and needing at least 4L of water per person. The trail is usually next to the wash, though you could walk in the wash itself if you desire, but the wash is sandier and harder to walk in. There is a movable gate that that you pass. You can go around it or through it. I'm not sure what its purpose is. At about the 2 mile point, you return to the wash and make your way into the canyon. After a short distance you come upon zebra Slot. Unfortunately, it was full of water today. About waist deep for someone 5'10". A number of people turned around and some went in. The water was numbingly cold. Anymore, I prefer to wear a wetsuit to take on water that cold. Otherwise, I shiver severely and don't enjoy myself. :( my oldest son did go in. After zebra, we headed over to tunnel. You head out the way you came in, and then once in the wash, you bear left and follow the canyon wall for about a half mile or so. You can walk in the wash (Harris wash) or take a well-worn trail near it. It's all desert hiking with pretty views of multicolored moonscape rocks. There are a few cairns marking the left turn into tunnel slot. Otherwise, it would be easy to miss. There is lots of vegetation, and the slot itself is set a little ways back. You walk a bit in the wash, and then the tunnel slot appears as a dark hole in the wall at the end of the canyon. This, too, was full of water, and it looked deep! None of us went in. We didn't see anyone at tunnel slot, whereas there were quite a few people at zebra Slot. Probably less people because you are taking a 5 mile hike to zebra and adding on tunnel slot makes it almost 8 miles. Which can be a long time in the hot sun. It is full exposure with little to no shade the entire hike. Despite this, we had a lot of fun. From tunnel, we retraced our steps back to car.

One cool thing we saw was a plethora of moqui marbles, both whole and in halves. So neat! We left everything for the next folks to enjoy! :)

The trailhead for the Zebra and Tunnel slots is just off the Hole in the Rock road, roughly 8 miles from UT 12, making it closer and easier to drive to than Peekaboo and Spooky. If you're driving a low clearance passenger car and have doubts about being able to make it to Peekaboo and Spooky, then these are the slots for you.

The trail out to the slots isn't especially scenic in the first quarter mile, but quickly improves as you go. The trail is easy to follow and crosses a wash multiple times. On the way out, I switched off between following the trail and walking in the wash. As I got further out, I found myself preferring the wash to the the trail. My wife and daughter stuck to the trail and I eventually became separated from them. Even so, we both hit Harris Wash at about the same time. I found them by walking west in Harris Wash.

Harris Wash seemed to have some firm sections, but once we entered the drainage that led to Zebra, we found it to be very sandy. My wife found the sand to be most enervating.

Zebra is cool, though after her experience with Spooky on the day before, my wife decided not to go very far into the slot. This time, I left my pack near the entrance and, for some sections of the slot, I used my teeth to hold onto my camera strap.

My daughter got ahead of me and did the climb leading to the keeper pothole. She looked at the pothole, but did not go into it. She climbed back down and spotted me as I did the climb to look at the pothole. It appeared to me that two people might be able to escape it together (especially if they also have a length of webbing or rope available), but we didn't put my theory to the test.

After Zebra, my wife headed back to the truck, but my daughter and I went on to take a look at Tunnel. I found that the GPS track that I had loaded led us on trails through the sand. We found it easier to stay on some relatively firm terrain in the wash. We followed some of these trails on the way to Tunnel, but stayed in the wash on the way back. Staying in the wash - which winds a bit - adds some distance, but the hiking was easier due to the firmer terrain.

Anyway... Tunnel was wet right from the start. I didn't wear my water shoes that day, but my daughter had, so she went in. It was a warm day, but the water was cold. She practiced her stemming technique to avoid being in the water for very long.

We stayed in the wash, first Harris Wash, and then whatever drainage it is that feeds into Harris Wash which led back to the trailhead. Eventually it made more sense to hike the trail, so we did that.

I found this to be a very pleasant hike. I enjoyed the hike to/from the slots as much as the slots themselves. The striations in Zebra are impressive and is well worth the trip.

This will be the last hike of our trip. We started with two days backpacking in Coyote Gulch and then a day hike into Neon Canyon. We car camped the night before roughly a mile SW of Zebra. This gave us plenty of time to check out Zebra and Tunnel before making the drive back to Phoenix.

We packed up camp and made the drive over to the TH and were surprised to find the area vacant at roughly 8:45am. We geared up and started our hike. The going in is very easy as the trail is mostly hard packed dirt that makes for fast travel. We cruised in and slowly dropped into Harris Wash. Once there the next half mile was a pain as we hiked in deep sand that was annoying and slow. We finally reached Zebra Slot and headed in. We were the only ones back here so we took our time and savored this slot canyon. The walls narrow as you hike back and get very tight near the back. We had to shimmy through some stretches and this took a lot of work. After a few minutes we hit our turnaround point. There is a shelf to climb and it’s difficult & awkward with all the sandstone. We had our fill so we made our way back. It was still early so we decided to hike over to Tunnel Slot.

We returned to Harris Wash and got to enjoy more sand. The good thing is it doesn’t last long and the mile over to Tunnel goes by quick. Karl said the last time he was here the slot was mostly under water that ranged from knee to thigh deep. We were both happy to see a small pool that will not be an issue. We headed through and took a variety of pics. From there we turned around and started the hike out. We pretty much flew out of there and were back to the TH around 11:30am. We then packed up and started the long drive back to Phoenix.

Our four days were complete. We had an amazing trip and barely scratched the surface of all the hiking options off Hole in the Rock Rd. This is a hiking mecca with lots to explore. I will return someday!

Last hike of the weekend a quick out and back to Zebra and Tunnel slot canyons. Hike is relatively short and the trail head is right on Hole in the Rock road. But for such a short hike there is great scenery and two short slot canyons. Getting an early start we didn't see anyone in either canyon. Zebra was first up and my favorite of the two because of the zebra strip striations on the rock. Being short canyon it doesn't take long to reach the end at a climb where we turned around. You can go past the six foot climb but the slot only goes for another 50 feet or so.

After leaving Zebra it's about a mile over to Tunnel Slot which is even shorter. The slot is a true tunnel as the water has bored through the rock creating it's namesake. The canyon continues past the tunnel for a few hundred feet and we turned around there. There was one small pool in the tunnel but we were able to easily stem over it. Once back through the tunnel we hiked out the same way to the trail head. Great weekend topper in this cool area of Utah and so much more explore for sure!

Our final hike in the area was on Joel's birthday. We visited Tunnel and Zebra. We hiked in quickly because we all knew we had the big drive home to contend with. We visited Tunnel first. Even though I had seen cross section drawings of this slot in the Kelsey book I was still amazed to see it with my own eyes. The tunnel had water in it. The first few feet were hard to avoid the water. I went in until I was about thigh deep and then I decided to do a bit of stemming. The water was cold since it doesn't really see any sun. The ceiling has about 4 inch gap which doesn't allow any light in. All the light is from the entrances on either side. The Tunnel itself isn't that long. But it is spectacular!!!

From there we retraced our steps to Zebra. Unfortunately, the tourists were now out and so we had to share our Zebra experience with them. I feel like I didn't get to take the photos I would have otherwise. But even so it was great! We went as far as we could to a climb. Josh went up the climb and scoped it out for us. It didn't seem worth struggling up the climb so we went ahead and turned around. The sandstone stripes in this canyon and unlike the ones in the others. We also saw many of the Iron oxide concretions AKA Moqui marbles. Well worth the hike!

We made quick work of the hike out and then drove the 10 hours home...

Overall visiting Escalante National Monument meant a Happy Birthday for Joel!

Before heading back to Arizona we had two more slot canyons to explore on the way out. Still on the Hole in Rock road we parked at the TH for Tunnel and Zebra slot canyons. It's about 2.5 miles into Harris Wash and the entrance to Tunnel which was first up. Tunnel is extremely short but high in fun factor. The slot was filled with water but still able to wade while others practiced their stemming skills to stay out of the deepest part. We explored the area and eventually made our way back out to Harris Wash. From there it's over to Zebra and this very short cool slot. As the name implies the slot has Zebra strips along the walls in the middle part. There was an up climb which only one of our group navigated and informed us that a keeper hole just beyond would not be passable without some gear. So we decided to turn around at this point having seen most of the slot. Once out we had some lunch and then headed back to the TH. There were two small groups in the area but we had most of this hike to ourselves. Once back at the TH we had the dreaded drive back. Thanks to Belinda and Joel Norby for setting this trip up and working out all the logistics!

Tunnel was immediately water to wade through, but seeing everyone else go for it, I couldn't sit it out.

Zebra was tight and a bit more challenging.

Slot #4 on my Trip...Should have been #4 and #5 but that's for later... ;) Somehow when I was Researching Areas before I left, I overlooked this Hike...I found out about it from the Ranger in Escalante...She gave me a Generic Looking Map of the Area, the Mileage to the "TH" and marked a couple of Hashes on the Map. On my way to Peek-a-boo the Day before, I found the TH for it and saw a distinct Trail going East, so I knew that had to be it.

Parked at the "TH" which is right on Hole In the Rock Road. It's just a Pull Off the Road, Dirt Area. It can handle maybe 10 Cars and there is no indication that there is a TH there, except you could see the Trail across the Road...No Signs...

Started Hiking and I must say, what an awesome Trail this was, all the way to Harris Wash and even beyond (I'll get to that later) The Trail is hardpacked Sand or Dirt with no Rocks...There were a few spots that had a short stretch of loose Sand, but that was it. You could really cruise on this Trail and even run it if you wanted. It was Sweet...

The Trail parallels and eventually ends up down in Halfway Hollow...The Geology in Halfway Hollow is Amazing...You pass Formations that have "The Wave" Characteristics and then near Harris Wash, it changes and it almost has a "White Pocket" Appearance in places...When you hit the Bottom of Halfway Hollow, the Trail continues even though you're in a Wash...In a few Spots you cross the Wash and in a few other Spots you walk the Wash for a bit, but if you keep looking, you'll pick up the Trail again out of the Wash. At one point, you walk under a Fence... Eventually the Wash bends right, but you keep on the Trail going straight and you leave the Wash for awhile. You do a Roller Coaster over a few Hills and then the Trail dumps you into Harris Wash which is good sized. Now you turn Left and start walking in Sand...A little more Effort here...After about 1/4 Mile, you see another large Wash coming in from the Left...Don't go Left, stay straight and continue to follow the Wash that you're in, curving right and then left and then you will see the Entrance to the Zebra Slot straight ahead...It's Easy to Spot.

If you expect to be able to go quite a ways in this Slot, you may be disappointed depending on how Agile you are. But you won't be disappointed in the little bit you do get to see...There were two Pools of Water but they were shallow and short so I just waded on in...Calf Deep is all. I guess at certain Times though, this Slot can be a Swimmer...There was an Obstacle past the Pools where I Chimneyed up and around...This Slot was also hard in Spots because there was no "Floor". You were walking in a Crevice and you had to watch to make sure your Feet didn't get stuck...If you can make it to what I would call the "Hallway" you will be in Awe and understand how this Slot got it's name...Once you negotiate the "Hallway" you will run into another Obstacle. I couldn't Chimney this one and getting up and over it was going to take some moves that I wasn't sure I wanted to try since I was alone. Unlike the Peek-a-boo Area, I only saw 6 people all day on this Hike...So that was my Turn-around Point.

On the way back to where the Trail came in, I started looking for the Tunnel Slot. The Ranger had said that it was about 1/2 Mile from Zebra which would put it right about where the Trail came into the Wash...I didn't see anything so I walked down the Wash past the Trail. Then a Trail appeared on the far side of the Wash and it looked like a continuation of the same Trail I followed to get down here. There was even a Cairn. So I took it. It didn't follow the Wash, but the Wash took a Turn and you crossed it to where the Wash was now on your Left. But the Trail continued up out of the Wash, and paralleled it about 30 Feet over, so I stayed on the Trail. I went over a 1/2 Mile or so on the Trail and it just kept going. I was hoping it would lead me to the Slot, but I never saw any kind of an Opening in the Wall to the Left. I just didn't get it and couldn't find it...I finally turned around and headed back, content with what I had done and deciding I would try it again another Time...

Just before ascending out of Halfway Hollow for good, I stopped for a Break and had Lunch. As I was putting on my Pack to get going again, an older Man was Hiking up and getting ready to ascend as well. I found it interesting that I hadn't run into him before this and it turns out, he had done a Loop using Harris Wash, so he had come down a different way...He was a Local and had been Hiking this Area for Years. We ended up Hiking out together, had some nice Conversation and I got to pick his Brain a little bit about the Area. He told me that the Upper Zebra Slot was Technical and that I would have had to turn around anyway. There are two big Pour Offs that will keep you from going any further...Sounds like it might be fun to go from the Top, down... :D

It also turns out, it took him 3 Tries to find the Entrance to the Tunnel Slot. He was not surprised that I couldn't find it. Apparently it is hard to spot unless you are right up against that Left Wall and it wasn't 1/2 Mile from Zebra, it was 1/2 Mile from where the Trail hits Harris Wash. Instead of staying on the Trail, I should have gotten off and hugged that Left Wall to see it...I may have walked right by it and didn't know it...He also stated that Tunnel is definitely a Swimmer and very Dark...It is literally a Tunnel with no Sky in places...I'm betting that that Water would be pretty Cold...

The Conversation continued until we got back to the Vehicles and parted ways...Really a nice guy and very helpful...Also found out about a Road I can take before Boulder that would have some Dispersed Camping. I will log that Information away for the next Trip, as I was done in this Area and was going to Hike up in the San Rafael Swell the next day. I wanted to get some of that Driving out of the Way before this Day ended. I ended up spending the Night at Capitol Reef National Park.

Nice Hike and especially since I didn't get to do Tunnel, I will do this again...But even without Tunnel, it's a Sweet Area and rates a Return...And guess what? Another large Photoset.... :o ;)

A hot hike, little shade, very short slot. Nice but I liked others in the area much more.
