This was perhaps the most scenic hike that I have ever been on. The views as we approached the summit were almost surreal, and pictures don't the views justice.

There was a bit of rock scrambling near the summit, but nothing too difficult.

You definitely need a 4WD vehicle to get to the TH. My buddy drove us to the TH in his Wrangler Unlimited. The only other vehicles at the TH were a Rubicon and a stock 4Runner Trail. The folks in the 4Runner were from Phoenix, oddly enough.

One nice thing about hiking in the San Juans is that there weren't many other people on the trails. I guess that the remoteness of the area and the rough roads keeps the riff-raff away!

We parked a little below the lower Matterhorn Creek TH in the afternoon and backpacked up to treeline where we set up camp. Aside from a few old fire rings, there is very little in the way of established sites, but there's plenty of space to pitch a tent. There's plenty of water, but many of the drainages are cloudy and discolored from minerals. The best one near our camp was the stream at the bottom of the basin that was running perpendicular to the Wetterhorn/Matterhorn ridge. Wetterhorn loomed over us the whole time :worthy:

The next morning we climbed the remaining distance to Broken Hill saddle, and then embarked on a long journey over to Uncompahgre's south ridge. There were quite a few false ridges on the way, and it took a while to get back into the basin below Wetterhorn that afternoon. There were a few butterfly researchers pacing around the tundra as we zigzagged up Uncompahgre. Aside from a brief rubbly slope, the climbing was very straightforward. There's a broad summit with amazing views and some nice shelters, but don't look over the north face unless you have a strong stomach :scared:

The following morning started out on a really nice trail through the rock-strewn tundra up to the shoulder of Wetterhorn. The remaining route required a little study and a lot of concentration, but there was always just enough stable rock to scramble along safely. The final class 3 scramble that I was worried about proved to be delightfully stable and fun. I found this hike to be much more manageable and fun than Longs, even though the technical ratings are the same. If you can't find a great handhold (or 3) within arm's reach - you're off-route.

HANG EVERYTHING THAT IS SWEATY/SALTY ENOUGH TO BE APPETIZING TO MARMOTS. My trekking poles and sandals took some serious damage (during a nap and a climb, respectively). I was lucky to not have my backpack destroyed.

Wonderful peak. The drive to the trailhead is probably harder than the hike. My Subaru Baja handled it just fine but it took a couple of hard hits - next time I would consider renting a Jeep in Lake City. Nice camping area about a half mile from the trailhead.

headed up the rough nellie creek road to the 4x4 trailhead. it started of cloudy and was soon drizzling on us, which it would do off and on, and with varying severity for much of the way up and partly on the way down. the rains brought warmer morning temps though.

quick stint through the trees and then you are above timber line, hiking above and next to beautiful nellie creek. big bad Uncy looms large for the whole hike. as we started switchbacking up to the ridge for the final approach to marmots started their war squeaks. as we hit the summit it kinda cleared up a bit and we were able to spend a good amount of time up there marveling at the tremendous views, especially of wetterhorn and matterhorn but really of the san juans in general. we got snow flurried on and eventually started getting chilly so we headed back down. the rain briefly picked up for a while but as we neared nellie creek again it got pretty darn nice out and we totally chilled it out on the way back.

this hike rocks...big time

Just wasn't feeling the best this weekend, and it showed. I enjoyed this trail more than the Handies one, mainly because the slope was softer, the trail itself was nicer (not too many loose stones on the trail), and it was more interesting near the top -- ah, scrambling and climbing!

The trail starts out below treeline, which is a nice change to most of the 14ers I've done. You're out pretty quickly though, and onto some nice views of Uncompahgre's pinnacle-like peak. Once up to the Matterhorn Creek trail junction, the views get even better. It's at this point also that the wind starts to get worse and worse. It was blowing so strongly out there that it took great effort just to be able to breathe. Got a real ab workout forcing the air in and out! Staying ON the trail (and avoiding being blown away) was also a lot of work, as I'd forgotten to pack a trekking pole. Really would have come in handy. Eventually made it up to the climbing portion of the trail near the top. There are a lot of routes up this section, so just look for cairns if the first route you see doesn't look pleasing. Everything here is loose and there's a good amount of exposure. Lots of scree, lots of dirt covering the rocks. But very doable! Once at the top, the wind was surprisingly calmer. Got into the peak log and saw/learned some interesting things:

- this peak was the first 14er for a five-year-old boy that day,
- as well as for a 56 year old woman.. good for her!
- the day before, a woman said "yes" to her new fiance
- a woman named Donna left an angel at the top for John Proctor, who had died just days before
- despite almost a full page of entries, the top was completely empty.. I guess that's what a late start gets me, but this early September weather was very cooperative!

Went down the loose bouldery/scree area a little more to the northwest (the righthand route) of the way I came up. Much better going down that than the other one. Ended up getting a good burst of energy coming down, which surprisingly hadn't happened the day before on Handies. Practically ran down the mountain and got back to the TH just a bit before sunset.

Oh yeah, and this is another one of those roads I'd suggest 4WD/high clearance. Really cuts off some good mileage on the hike. Without it, about 8 miles are added onto the trip. Save those miles for another mountain down the road, such as Wetterhorn. =)

Quite possibly the best day ever...

After receiving favorable reports, I decided to attempt Uncompahgre Peak the following day. It would be my first fourteener. I booked a hotel room in Silverton and went to bed early.

I left the in-laws house in Cortez at 5 am, and made good time through Durango, but ran into millions of bicyclists for Ride The Rockies when I reached Poncha Springs. Wolf Creek Pass was slow going with bikes everywhere, a rolled over semi, and cops. Turning off at South Fork, I drove through Creede, stopped at the Alferd Packer Massacre Site (Really, who builds a house at a spot like that? :o ), and rolled through Lake City.

Turning off from Henson Creek Road, I made the rough drive up Nellie Creek Road, giving the 4wd a good workout. My 12 pm start time would normally have been a very bad idea for Uncompahgre Peak, but the weather was on my side today. I passed 7 others hiking down as I was going up, then had the place to myself. Arriving at the south ridge, I surpassed my old high altitude record of 12,890 feet, and kept on going. The chute section near the top definitely grabbed my attention. I soon made the top, where I hung out with curious marmots for almost an hour, sending texts to family and friends, taking photos and video, and just enjoying every minute of it. No summit register to be found... :? I started down at 3:30 pm and made good time, even getting to try a short glissade for the first time.

I reached the Nellie Creek Trailhead a little after 5 pm, then drove back to Lake City. Wow, what a hike! I enjoyed a good burger at Southern Vittles restaurant before I began part 2 of my adventure...

I left Lake City at 8 pm, and began the backroad shortcut to Silverton along the Alpine Loop road. The canyon of the Lake Fork of the Gunnison River was mind blowingly beautiful. I passed the trailheads for Handies, Redcloud, and Sunshine Peaks (You drove a car up the shelf road, Jim?! you're crazy! ) and several old buildings.

Arriving at the turnoff for American Basin at dark, I shifted into 4wd again, and started up the nasty Cinnamon Pass Road. Crawling along at 5 to 10 mph in 4wd in the San Juan Mountains at night while squeezing past huge snowdrifts and negotiating hairpin switchbacks on the side of a mountain might seem crazy, but I had a blast!

I reached the end of the Cinnamon Pass Road at the Animas River, then proceeded to explore the ghost town of Animas Forks for a bit by moonlight. I tried to identify the long vanished route of the Silverton Northern Railroad along this last stretch. It amazed me that a railroad ever made it through that rough country to Animas Forks. I finally reached Silverton at 11:30 pm, and checked into the Triangle Motel. I reviewed my options for the next morning, then fell into a coma sleep.

What a great day it had been! :y: I think it is safe to say that Uncompahgre Peak was the most exciting hike I have ever been on. I can't wait to go back. :D :D :D

We hiked in from Matterhorn creek and set up a base camp at Nellie creek just below 12,000 feet. Uncompahgre was the last summit we hiked in the area. We tore down camp after coming down and returned back to Matterhorn Creek trail head. We than headed over to Sunshine and Redcloud.

This was my 3rd 14er. Of the eight I have done to date (2013), this was my favorite. Not just because I got to pull off a real good surprise appearance for some friends at the summit, but because it's just a super cool hike! :) Paul and Pam were headed up to do some peaks and friends from SAHC, the Caley's, were already up there. We drove up and camped not far from the trailhead on Nellie Creek Road. In the morning we drove up to the trailhead at the end of the road, and saw the Caley's vehicle, so we knew they were ahead of us. As we neared the peak, we could see David and Johanna up ahead. Knowing I wanted to surprise them, Pam and Paul went ahead and engaged them in conversation. I lowered my hiking hat and walked on up past them as they talked, trying to look as inconspicuous as possible. It worked; they didn't identify me! :y: I went up a short ways, and turned around. I could hear David say, "Hey, didn't that guy look a lot like Randy?" To which Paul and Pam replied, "Yeah he sure did." I stealthily moved in and said, "Hey, that's David and Johanna!" It was a perfect moment! :o :D

Following the hike we drove to Lake City, then over to camp at the Silver Creek/Grizzly Gulch Trailhead. The rest of the group was going to hike up Sunshine and Redcloud the next day, while I was going to head back to Tucson. This was a brief trip for me, just two nights camping and one peak. Certainly not the recommended way to spend some time in an area after such a long drive! But that was a decade ago; I don't have that kind of energy anymore. Still a wonderful memory though! :)
