It had been over 12 years since this one had an HAZ triplog, so I decided to go out and show Mount Triplet some love!

Mount Triplet (elevation of 5,299 feet and prominence of 1,349 feet) is on the San Carlos Apache Reservation. I have done several San Carlos hikes, and this one is far and away the easiest to get to. I parked at a fairly large pullout on Road 8, which is a paved road. Road 8 isn't the greatest paved road in the world, but it's a lot better than, say, Highway 93 from Wickenburg to I-40.

From where I parked, I made my way cross country and ascended on a ridgeline north of the summit. Along the way I picked up the default GPX track for the hike, and followed it the rest of the way.

As I was ascending I saw a half dozen or more bighorn sheep, which was cool.

There was a good bit of light-to-moderate brush on the hike, but it wasn't bad. I had some knee high gaiters but I did not bother to put them on. There was a lot of rock of various sizes to deal with on the hike, which to me was more bothersome than the brush. It was a bit of a steep climb to the summit, but it wasn't too bad and the footing was pretty good.

I thought that the 360 degree views on the summit were outstanding. Someone had gotten a bit carried away with spray paint at the summit -- probably some kid on the reservation.

There was nothing really hard about the hike, but by the same token there weren't many easy steps. This made the going much slower than I anticipated. I did enjoy the views though -- both at the summit and along the way on the hike.

:D Bushwhack adventures with Eric & Hank

Mount Triplet is one of the most ominous and obscure peaks in Graham County. Oh, did I mention that it's also on the San Carlos Reservation. Even better! If you frequently drive between Globe and Safford, you have likely noticed it's towering slopes against the skyline. The front side of Mount Triplet is nearly impossible to hike unless you enjoy torture with a hint of death, however the backside has a very manageable ridgeline leading directly to the top. The only obstacles blocking your progress are moderate areas of shrub oak and loose rock.

I must put a disclaimer on this hike... The posted route is a means to an end. This hike is all about the summit. Don't come here expecting anything beautiful. Everything about this hike is stark and harsh. If you're still interested after reading that, lets continue. As I began ascending the final 200 vertical feet, it became increasingly obvious that this was not going to be any ordinary summit experience. The high-point summit of Mount Triplet is nothing more then an exposed pile of boulders with howling wind and dramatic 360-degree views. WOW!!! Looking across to the rugged secondary summit was soooo cool! I actually had visions of hiking that on this trip. Yeah right! A quick look through the binoculars reversed those plans. Every step around the summit had to be carefully chosen. Hank unknowingly stepped on a precariously loose boulder and almost fell off the top with camera in hand. I had a few close calls myself. Luckily the camera, I mean Hank, survived the tumble. Ha. Just kidding. Screw the camera. I didn't want to have to activate my Spot and possibly lose a good friend. That's one of those toys that you hope you never need to use. Places like this must be treated with respect.

Mount Triplet is a mountain that I have wanted to hike for many years. I just had to know what it would be like to stand up there. This was a memorable trip to say the least. Call it personal accomplishment and stubbornness. I don't regret it a bit and I'm so glad to have been able to share it with Hank.

It was a good day visiting and "off trail" hiking again with Eric. Originally, we had plans to hike Jerky Butte--> http://www.hikearizona.com/photo.php?ZIP=163680 , but due to this longer Sierra Ancha Mountains commute time and mileage, Eric came up with this other good choice which was just a few miles NE of Globe in the San Carlos Indian Reservation and would be a first time visit for me to the SCIR.

Along our rocky, low vegetation route, I really enjoyed the long distance mesa views north and east as we gained altitude to summit this dominant benchmark peak at 5299ft. The south, west, and 360 degree views from the summit top weren't bad either :D

After our hike finish, we took a drive further into the reservation lands to see the perennial "Warm Springs" area and then further in to view the TH Start area where Eric and Joe B. had previously hiked on May 1st- "San Carlos River at Warm Springs".

We finished up the day with another excellent stop at my now favorite dinner place to eat in Globe,AZ: Judy's Cook House.. http://hikearizona.com/dex2/igallery/im ... hp?id=4401 (Try it sometime and I bet you'll like it too!)
