I finally made it to Zion National Park. Katie and I had a relatively busy two days with Led by Sheep Saturday morning and some sight seeing the rest of the day. On Sunday we completed the Subway Route from the top down.

We really enjoyed Led by Sheep. The climbing was as advertised, easy, but run out. Ten alpine slings and two 60m ropes is all you need. The approach to the base in the morning was about as tranquil and perfect as you can get, to include a nice viewing of several bighorns making their way about the slab. We started with headlamps and were roping up to a rising sun.

I snagged the first pitch and then Katie and I swapped until we reached the summit. We took a quick break on the summit and then began our descent via rap. The heat did not take long to kick in, so we were happy to finish the four rap descent rather efficiently and without any real snags.

On our return to the car, we stopped at the petroglyphs, which were impressive, with some unique to us etchings.

A perfect first hike in Zion.

Led by Sheep is the name of the route we took on Aires Butte. The mountain is a 1050 ft hunk of sandstone just outside of the park.
It is rated a 5.7 climb of 600 ft, 4 pitches plus an unroped short scramble to the very top. We found one blown out bolt and one loose bolt.

The alarm was set for 3:30am so we could have a cup of coffee before beginning the day. Broke down camp, packed up the car, drove to the parking area, geared up and started moving by 5:30am. It was a very difficult route to locate. We probably spent 1.5 hours wandering the area trying to find any indication of a bolt or the start. I think we were on top by 11am. We did run into the herd of sheep that this route is named after. The last of our climb water was boiling by noon. Reaching our packs at the base of the climb was a good thing and my water there was still tolerable. The hike out was excessively hot but all downhill. The views were more amazing than promised, it was certainly a gift of a day!
