Took advantage of the last day of sunny weather before the winter storms arrive. Clear skies with temps in the 40s, the road to the trailhead had a good amount of frost on it. I was the only car at the trailhead and had the whole area to myself.

Beautiful trail. Starts out meandering gently through the forest and then gradually climbs to Pansy Lake. The whole lake was covered in a thin layer of ice. The trail itself was snow free except for a couple patches of needle ice and some very small patches of thin snow in the shade up by the lookout tower. Beautiful views from the top, well worth the effort. Really wasn't expecting much from this hike, but had a good time- definitely want to head back and explore some of the other trials in the area.

Did the loop from the Pansy Lake trailhead to the lookout tower and back. Were surprised to see 3 cars already there and two arriving as we set out. We did the loop counter clockwise, going to Pansy Lake first and then climbing up on trail #558 to its intersection with #554 which takes you to the lookout tower. After completing the hike, we agreed that clockwise is probably the easier hike. Cloudy at the start but we hoped the weather forecast would be correct and it would clear up. Got to the lookout tower at 1 PM but there was not much but clouds to see. We stayed about an hour at the top and got some OK views but nothing like the post from a week go from another member. A nice hike though so we'll have to do it again. Roads were in good condition. Trail was in decent shape but there there lots of blown downs on the first half of our hike (counter clockwise). Some small patches of snow but they were easily navigated. So peaceful and quiet out there, will have to do it again!
