beautiful canyon. Only two short swimmers - the wetsuits were overkill. The sneak exit seems sportier. The last gully to climb is very loose and sketchy.

Flintstone

The drive from our Insomnia camp to Flintstones was a bit long. First we were busy chattering and listening to ‘Canyon’ music which likely caused the first missed turn. Then it didn’t help that on my phone I had the original route and the sneak route and I for some reason keep looking at the original route waypoint for the parking. Anyway, we finally made it to our starting point.

The bushwhack down to the entrance rappel was almost not noticeable it was over so quickly! We then rappelled about 90 ft into the canyon proper.

From there we started out without our wetsuits. The first rappel in Flintstone took us into a swimmer but it was refreshing so we didn’t need our wetsuits.

We continued without wetsuits until we got to the narrows. We put them on but never really need them. The narrows were beautiful.

At the end was a big section of Poison ivy. I kept trying to point it out but sometimes the message didn’t always get to everyone.

When we were done we ate our very brown celebratory muffins and other snacks. It was nice to hang and relax.

As we exited the canyon we inadvertently went up a ridge line we should not have. I had checked my GPS at one point and we were on route but probably steps away got off route and I didn’t check it for several hundred feet. By then we were way off route and decided to continue in case would could make our own sneak route. The way was brushy and steep. At one point it probably had a class 5 move or two. Carl and Tim got to a saddle where they could see where we were. Tim ask if we wanted the good news or the bad. I asked for the bad. He said that we had cliffed out and that our best option was to retreat a ways before getting into the gully we should have been the whole time. I don’t recall ever asking for the good news but he really needed to tell us. The good news was that we were all still friends.

Our attempted sneak route made the real sneak route seem relatively easy. Ha! It was still a very steep scramble up lose materials including logs that had just enough features to climb. Thankfully our team are a bunch of bad asses and were able to do our cliff-out climb plus the actual climb out without a break.

Using the recently updated beta on ropewiki we drove to the end of FS536A, dropped down the north facing slope to a 100ft entrance rap at the start of the canyon narrows. we found the canyon to have a lot of debris from the Slide Fire of 2014. Huge blackened logs added obstacles. somewhere between 6-10 raps and a few swims, several downclimbs and a couple slides. Longest rap was about 180ft which we stopped at an intermediate anchor to rethread so to make rope pull easier (and successful). The midway anchor is an old rope on a pinch point and has a small core shot- should be replaced or backed up soon! Another anchor is off a burnt log which looks like it could shift down canyon, it was stable today but future canyoneers should use it with caution. Around one corner we found a large iceberg! The swims are short though and a farmer john wetty was sufficient on this sunny day. Toward the end of the technical section is a 40ft rap into an avoidable pothole, a couple hundred feet downstream the canyon widens. we didn't find the cairns described on ropewiki but headed up the right slope to the left of a 25ft dry fall. following this drainage for 20min then at an actual cairn we took the right of three gullies toward a small saddle. This gully was very loose with lots of ash. Once at the saddle head up and left of the cliff, more loose and bushy climbing. The good news is it only took an hour to reach the car! We made good time throughout as all 3 members (Scott B & Patrick M) were experienced and agile.

Had good weather for this pretty canyon, even though we got drenched the night before at camp. One really sweet narrow section with a rappell around 150 feet. A total of about 7 rappells and many nice down climbs.

Nice canyon, though nothing spectacular. My energy levels were yo-yo'ing all day.

West Fork was amazing as always. A few of the trees along 89A have turned yellow. Not sure what type they are, but it's probably still a month or so until prime time.

We had a very full (11 mile) day in this sweet Sedona Canyon & West Fork of Oak Creek. 11.75 hours of canyon time + 8 hours of driving time = worn out but happy! Had my alarm set for 3:00am and arrived back home in time to put my head on the pillow at 2:30am.

We did get a rope stuck in a lovely crack and had to ascend the rope to remedy the situation so that extended our canyon time a smidge. The amount of tree fall to contend with in this canyon was massive. Probably more combined tree fall in this one canyon than in all of the other hikes I have ever done put together. Hit the Call of the Canyon trail just a few minutes before dark (thankfully but according to plan) and stumbled out with headlamps.......extreme fatigue! We were so zapped that we had a little challenge locating our shuttle vehicle....LOL. Can't wait to go back :D

Thanks Cheryl and Ryan :)

We parked not too far from FR535 and just road walked a half mile down the road before heading west into the forrest aiming for a side canyon of Flintstone Canyon. Dropping alongside this side canyon was easy enough, but once in upper Flintstone Canyon we hit loads of rock hopping and treefall to negotiate. As the canyon slowly dropped, we eventually reached a cool slickrock section with some pools to avoid. About an hour into the hike, we hit the first major log downclimb of 12-15ft that wasn't too difficult followed soon by the first rappel and we quickly geared up. :GB: This first rap was a sloping 40-footer in a chilly wader/swimmer and the only mandatory swimmer of the day so we didn't even bring wetsuits today. The 2nd rappel was soon afterwards and was an easy 25-30ft drop down a terraced slope. The next drop we were able to balance down a huge log, followed by a short downclimb with a icky pool below that we tried our best to bypass, with yet another sloping downclimb alongside a log. :) Rappel #3 was a another 30ft drop over some huge chockstones with an awkward start with the next rappel just around the corner. From some big boulders as anchors, rappel #4 was a super sweet :D 60-70ft drop from a keyhole ledge with the canyon dramatical opening up above us. Now the canyon above us may have opened up, but down below in the drainage we head deeper and deeper into the rabbit hole... :GB: We soon hit a slick downclimb/slide and then the canyon takes a hard right with a 2-stage 150ft drop that opens up below us. :o We locate the bolt and break out the 2 200ft ropes and slowly take turns dropping thru this crack into a sweet grotto below. Once all down and the rope thankfully pulled without too much issue, we proceeded thru this sweet section of narrows that started with a tight drop under a wedged tree stump that we dubbed the birth canal. These narrows consisted of many awkward short rappels, tricky down climbs, and a swimmer to avoid by walking a log. For our group, rappel #5 was a awkward 12ft drop over a chockstone, #6 was a sloping 30-35ft drop into a pool that we avoided via that log, #7 was another awkward 8-10ft drop over a huge chockstone, and #8 was a 35-40ft sloper into a potential pool that was covered in logs. Some more down climbing, loads of rock hopping, and plenty of treefall to bypass and we eventually reached the amazingly beautiful West Fork. :D The 3 or so miles downstream to the Subway section were as scenic as ever, taking loads of pictures along the way, I made sure to quickly enjoy a couple pools on this warm sunny day, and two hours later we were strolling thru the Subway. The 3-mile West Fork trail was a nice break from all the creek hiking and we hammered it out in about an hour. It's always funny to walk by the tourists on this trail and see the their confusing looks as we go whizzing buy with big packs, helmets, ropes, neoprene socks, and my sexy shin guards.

Back at the TH, we rock hopped briefly up the other fork of Oak Creek to get to my car that I parked alongside 89A to avoid paying the ridiculous $10 parking fee. We made pretty good time today but we still had to go pick up the other vehicle up above on the rim, grab dinner in Flagstaff since we were so far north, and then make the drive home to be back for the holidays...

Did this canyon with my friends Andrew Greene and Jason Berry, we were searching for Illusions before any good beta was available. We called it Howard Pocket Slot since Howard Pocket is the USGS topo starting point. My plan was to drop down this drainage and eventually hit West Fork, head upstream then follow Casner Draw back up to the rim. We made 7 or so raps, 1 two stage rap as we had only 1 200ft rope. A few murky swims, many down climbs, and one slide into a black pool. We missed the fork for Casner and ended up hiking all the way up West Fork. By this time it was getting dark and starting to rain. We trudged on, eventually hitching a ride for a few miles then more muddy road hiking to our vehicle. It was a very long and cold day.
