Day 79. Camped at 1519.9 (18.7)
After 3 days rest in Dunsmuir, I got back on trail a bit past ten. I was really depressed with the thought of hiking 1150 miles in pain. After a couple miles the thought of packing it in was in my mind but I reasoned I could at least suffer through the rest of California, less than 200 miles. By the end of the day I was more optimistic with my progress. There was a lot of climbing today and the views changed from looking up at Castle Crags to looking across at Castle Crags. Saw a rattlesnake. It's tail was mangled and it had no rattle. It was very hot today, bearable in the shade but stifling when exposed, especially while climbing. Found a few geocaches along the trail. Finished the day at twilight with a beautiful view of Shasta and the Crags.

Day 80. Camped at 1543.1 (23.2)
Shin started out sore but improved as the day wore on. After about 5 miles, I geocached for awhile (found 8 of 10). That slowed me down a lot so got serious about walking in the afternoon. Day ended with hail and rain and a big deluge late at night; stormy evening. About midnight, heard mice gnawing on food bag so I got up and hung it.

Day 81. Camped at 1568.8 (25.7)
Started the day slowly, both breaking camp and my walking pace. At half past 11, I had a yardsale to dry everything out after last night. As yesterday,  I upped my pace in the afternoon to make the planned miles. Leg felt better as the day progressed and I'm happy for that.

Day 82. Camped near 1594.0 (25.2)
Shin is doing much better. I had essentially no pain all day though it certainly is far from 100% I'm confident it will heal fully soon. Lots of climbing today, some steep. Really enjoyed hiking through the Russian Wilderness. Camped at Paynes Lake. Finished earlier than I have in a long time.

Day 83. Hiked to 1599.7 (5.7), then hitched to Etna. Some climbing today. Hazy from smoke from forest fires so views not as good as they normally would be.

Went on the same hike as last weekend to Burstarse Falls...a lot has changed in one week! The falls were now partially frozen, which was pretty awesome to see. Glad I went back again. Also, someone I hiked with brought a dog who loved the hike as well. I hope to adopt a dog of my own that will enjoy hiking.

The rain stopped by noon today in Castella, so it was a great time to hike to Burstarse Falls. The parking lot at Dog trailhead is large, and unfortunately had some trash througout. But that's just the parking lot, where some people go to shoot. Dog Trail and the PCT was pristine. The PCT passed several creeks that had plenty of water flowing from recent precipitation. There were tiny patches of snow on the ground, but not many. I passed Popcorn Springs, and soon reached Burstarse Creek which had a small wooden sign attached to a tree marking the creek. There isn't much of a trail up the canyon along the creek, but there is a steep path on the east side of the creek to reach the lower falls. The lower falls are about 25 feet tall, with plenty of water flowing at this time. I was able to continue up past these falls before having to cross to the west side of the creek, and eventually had an obstructed view of the grand Burstarse Falls which are about two or three times taller than the lower falls. Falling right off the edge of a cliff down to the creek. Unfortunately I wasn't able to get much closer at the time, the rocks were slippery and I didn't want to risk falling in or getting hurt. Nature wins this time, so I'll have to go back again more prepared to get the full view of the upper falls.

Did this as an out and back day hike further exploring the Pacific Crest Trail. Encountered no one else on the trip.
