It's probably starting to look like I'm on a volcano quest this month. That actually wasn't planned. It's just ended up that way. May as well go with it! I must give credit where credit is due in regards to this destination. I found out about Cerro Hueco from a very old forum post that Elizabeth (azbackpackr) made a couple of years back. I starting doing my typical digging and was immediately enticed. It ended up being much more rewarding then I ever expected. This is a cool place! Cerro Hueco sits out in the middle of nowhere, basically forgotten and unknown to anyone other then locals. Very untouched and unspoiled. I'm a sucker for high plains grasslands so this was an easy sell. I love the wide-open views from a towering grassy knoll. For some added fitness and variety I rode my mountain in from the highway. After reaching the crater I first worked my way around the southern rim up onto the 7,358 high-point summit and then finished up with some exploration within the crater itself. The intricate rock formations and various overhanging outcroppings were well worth the added effort. Little things like those must be seen in person to really appreciate.
If you're ever up in the area, you just may want to add this hidden treasure to your list of things to do. I doubt you'll be disappointed.
