Camped at McHood and started from the reservoir. We explored maybe .75 - 1 mile further back on foot. There were few people when we started so thought maybe we hit an off weekend, but they were all coming in as we paddled out. It rained for about the last two miles with some strong headwinds. Had to power through to the end or get pushed back.

Spent the day up in Winslow and started the day with a Kayak on the Clear Creek Reservoir via McCloud Park.

Temps were perfect and very light breezes all day. There was a smattering other kayakers. I can see where this place could get quite busy on the weekends.

The first mile or so shows some scars of recent painted petroglyphs. After that you can see authentic petroglyph panels. We didn't make it to the end, but still had a great time. This seems to be popular with the Flagstaff crowd. Everyone I talked to was from there.

A stop at La Posada's Turquoise Room for one of the best Burgers I've had in awhile, and then we stood on the corner.

Starting to get used to this retirement thing.

Just short of 7 miles of paddling, the rest was hiking, swimming, and floating farther upstream. I made it much farther than I had previously been and continue to be intrigued by what lies beyond. It might require a packraft as there's a lot more water than dry ground and the $10 floatie isn't a really efficient canyon traveler.

Took the inflatable 2 person kayak out to Clear Creek and set out to paddle. One of the paddles was missing a piece so I mostly just got to sit in front while James steered us along... what a shame : wink : . It was quite busy in the beginning but the crowds did thin out as you went along. There were groups of rock climbers and even a slack line set up with some fabric pieces dangling down... kinda wish we would have seen some of the acrobatics! There was a pretty little waterfall spring, some remnants of ruins off to the side and even some petroglyphs on the walls. We went until the end and then got out to hike a bit further along the canyon. It was beautiful at the end and I wish we had more time to explore back there, especially since most people didn’t make it that far. For such a beautiful place, the motor boats passing through distracted from the experience and made the water choppy. Apparently there was a fishing contest that weekend, and they were all still out there even as it was approaching sunset. I’m glad we got to experience this place, but graffiti and rowdy crowds aren’t my favorite way to enjoy the outdoors, so I probably won’t be back here for a while.

Side note: loved the end of this canyon and if anyone knows any routes to hike down there without any paddling involved I’d love more info!

To cap off our Flagstaff/northern AZ 4th of July weekend, we decided to take a detour out to Winslow for our return trip to the Valley.

Having grown up in Flagstaff, my perceptions of Winslow were that it was a train stop where we went on a our 2nd grade field trip and where a few softball/baseball tournament were held--and not much else.

The second verse of a popular Eagles song notwithstanding, I'm pretty sure the most popular thing in Winslow is Clear Creek Reservoir.

To the non-locals, this is a bit of hidden gem. We arrived mid-afternoon, and locals were out in force, enjoying the best thing in town.

It was a good mile paddle upstream before we left the crowds behind. And at that point, the canyon is a real gem.

Thoroughly enjoyed the paddling. I, of course, wanted to go all the way to the climbing area and until the creek was too shallow to paddle, but my kiddos were ready to head back, so we turned around after a couple of miles.

I'll be back again to enjoy this one.

We drove back through Payson. Looking at the scarred landscape from the Bush fire was depressing. :( Among many others, Mt. Ord from Slate Creek will not be the same for a long time ....

This is always a nice paddle, but these days the place is so well-known, it's better to go on a weekday. I was surprised when I got there to find it now costs $7 for a day pass, ($15 for camping) and the parking lot is paved! I really didn't mind paying. If Winslow wants to take better care of their facilities, and needs extra funds for that, I'm all for it. It has always been kind of shabby at the parking lot and also at the campground. More about the grafitti later...

It wasn't one of those perfectly windless days, which lend themselves to mirror reflections of the cliffs in the water. There was a breeze, but not an onerous one.

I wasn't sure, with my new sea kayak, how it would be getting all the way to the bitter end of the floatable water, where you can start hiking. But I did. This boat is fiberglass, so you really don't want a lot of abrasion and scratches, but I delicately avoided (most of) the underwater rocks in the upper end. I didn't go hiking on up. As before, I just wasn't prepared for it, although this time I was wearing Chacos, which are not slippery. I walked up a short distance.

When I got back down to the parking area, I considered paddling past there, on down to the dam and back up again, but it had become hot, crowded and a bit windy, so I left that for another day. It's actually better to do that part first. Next time I plan on getting there at the crack of dawn. Better conditions and fewer people.

About the grafitti: If you've been here before, you've seen all the painted rocks, especially by where people swim. In the summer of 2018, at the AZT festival in Flagstaff, I talked to people from Natural Restorations, that nonprofit group dedicated to removing grafitti, about the problem at East Clear Creek reservoir. They seemed interested, and asked me to send photos. Well, I didn't get around to sending photos until the following March. They responded right away, and they were still interested. But I didn't hear from them again until January 17 of this year when I received the following email: "I just wanted to let you know that we have not forgotten about this project, it just took us a REALLY long time to find the property owner. I just got off the phone with the property owner and they are very excited about our help on the project and will give us permission. We need to get up there in the next month or two to measure the square footage of graffiti to start planning for the project and hopefully getting funding from REI again this year to tackle the project. Thanks again for reaching out to us about it and sending a picture!"

Well, we all know what happened to lots of projects after January of this year. The grafitti is still there. I may reach out to them, to let them know I'm paying attention. And as you have read, the property the grafitti is on does not belong to the city of Winslow, so they probably can't do much about the painting.

Beautiful warm day for some kayaking on Clear Creek. Unfortunately, the water looked more like mud. Hoped it would clear up as we approached the creek section, but of course, that is where all the murky brown water is coming from. Monsoon season just not the best time to visit this spot if you like crystal clear water. Still, always a joy to look up at the tall sheer cliffs and interesting geology. Quite a few people along the way. Plenty of rock climbers scouting deep water solo routes, boaters in various craft, cliff jumpers and sun soakers.

This was a particularly nice day for paddling East Clear Creek. Sunny, with a few puffy clouds, very little breeze, so that the reflections were at their best. And only a few people were there. I paddled up to the end, and once again thought I should consider bringing some kind of hiking shoes and a day pack, so that I could easily hike upstream for a bit. Slippery Tevas are not that much fun to hike in.

Next time.

Once again my old GPS has posted lower mileage than on a previous trip.

I'll list this as a hike though it involved kayaking, portaging, floating, swimming, paddleboarding, and probably a few other HAZ adventure modes.

I had never kayaked the reservoir, and recruited @Hikergirl81 to be my tour guide for the day. She convinced me to skip the lower miles of paddling and get right to the good stuff. Apparently this meant I missed out on the less scenic part of the reservoir, the garbage, crowds, graffiti, and noise. Does she know me, or what!? :)

The plan was to head south in the canyon and explore new terrain. She had been climbing at Winslow Wall a handful of times but wanted to explore more of the canyon. We ditched my kayak at the end of the reservoir, but portaged her SUP to the next pool. This was a great plan. There are numerous deep and very long pools for which swimming would be a bit chilly at this time of year (and tiring!). The option to stay on the surface when we reached the pools far outweighed the pita of carrying the SUP through the shallower parts. We chatted with a few climbers at Winslow Wall before continuing our trek upstream.

This area is amazing, and I want to come back! I'll have to check out the class 4 access in the book that @toddak referenced in his triplog because if I can get down here without paddling the lake or rappelling that would open a bunch of new possibililties for me.

With daylight waning, we turned back and made it to the truck just as it was getting dark. Alfonso's was closed, so we headed back to Flag for a late dinner that was well-earned!

We've been carrying kayaks around the state for 6 days. Today was the day we finally put them on the water. Arrived at the reservoir to an empty parking lot. Always good to have an experience like this all to yourself. Just me and my kids. We paddled in about 3 miles, sometimes walking the kayaks through shallow water. Most people turn around, but its worth it to get your feet wet and continue on.

I had been visiting with a friend in Holbrook, and brought my little inflatable kayak to use at East Clear Creek on the way home. I don't enjoy paddling it as much as my big sea kayak, but it's convenient to just stick it in the back of my Jeep, folded up in its duffel bag. (Also, I like to get some use out of it.) I bought it to be a "loaner" and also to use when I don't have room to pack the big boat.

It was really hot in Holbrook and Winslow. Felt good to be on the water. Lots of people swimming. The water temperature was pleasant.

The reservoir was beautiful, as always, and on this solstice day there were thunderstorms. Wonderful reflections. Warm rain fell on me from time to time as I paddled, and thunder rumbled. As usual in summer, there were some swimmers and cliff jumpers. Once you paddle on past the swimmers and graffiti there is a lot of canyon remaining where you'll have peace and quiet. The water was a couple of feet low, it appeared to me. This would mean you probably can't paddle up quite as far as usual.

Cliff swallows, feeding their young in their mud jug nests hung under ledges of the cliffs, "keer keered" at me as I took photos of their nests. But the thunderstorms were getting worse, so I turned around.

As for birds: during my stay in Holbrook, there was a mockingbird singing. I miss hearing them. They're not common in the high country where I summer. I love hearing their complex songs.

With my Jeep, I also checked out the largely-unknown lower Chevelon Creek reservoir. It's reachable via Territorial Road and McLaws Road, where there's a bridge across it. There's a 4WD road to the put-in, just north of the bridge, on the west side of the creek. This little reservoir is just a few miles east of Winslow. Not at all well-known, it's kind of a shallower and narrower version of East Clear Creek reservoir--in a canyon between cliffs. I plan to paddle there soon, but need to find someone to go with. It's very remote, there's usually no one else around. I know, that doesn't usually stop me, but still, I would prefer a companion for that mini-adventure.

I looked at the lower Chevelon Reservoir from McLaws Road bridge. Thought about paddling there. It's largely unknown except to locals. Just below the dam is the Little Colorado River, so it is NOT near Chevelon Lake, rather is at least 30 miles downstream from it. Similar to East Clear Creek, a long lake with cliffs on either side, etc. Maybe next time, after it's been raining a while.

This is always such a neat place to go kayaking. It never fails to amaze me it's in Winslow!

Also stayed at La Posada Hotel for the first time. Didn't take any photos of it, though.

Third trip to one of my favorite kayak destinations, East Clear Creek. Met some friends from Henderson, NV in Flagstaff. We rented a cabin there and drove to Winslow the next day. We brought the two hard shell boats and our inflatable two-man boat.

Started out paddling into the wind which wasn't all that pleasant. This being my friends first adventure in a kayak, I hoped the wind would subside once we got around the first bend and deeper into the canyon. The wind subsided and it was smooth paddling the rest of the way in.

Ate lunch about 2.5 miles in and then made our way out. Caught some more of that wind in our face on the way out. Why does it always seem that you get it going both ways? Caught a break just before the bridge and the wind shifted to our backs. By then, we were almost done though.

Drove back to Flag, cleaned up and enjoyed dinner at a Greek restaurant called Taverna, then it was off to downtown Flag and some drinks at Collins Irish Pub.

This is just about the most scenic place I've paddled in Arizona. However, it is significantly marred during the first mile or so by graffiti on the Coconino sandstone cliffs, and trash in the water. In my opinion the City of Winslow could be doing more to foster community service cleanups of the area, and to try to educate the public. They should come up with a way to remove the graffiti as quickly as it is painted, and to pick up the trash in the water, using volunteers. The city does not charge a fee to use the lake or to camp in the campground. Perhaps a fee to camp would help offset the cost of cleanup and education programs, and to train volunteers.

The other problem with kayaking up this otherwise sublime canyon is the fact that jetskis are allowed, creating a real danger for swimmers and kayakers alike. The canyon is very narrow and twisty. It is astonishing to me that the jetskis are allowed. I can see allowing fishermen with low-power motors, but not these things that can go over 60 mph. A tragedy waiting to happen. I did see a couple of these things, and thankfully their young operators were polite enough to slow down very significantly when they saw me. However, a swimmer in the water could be hidden from view and be run over.

Perhaps, if jetskis are going to be allowed, they could institute days on and days off, the way they do at many other lakes where non-motorized boats and electric trolling motorboats are used. Let's say Saturday for the jetskiers, and Sunday for quieter recreation, with weekdays divided up as well.

All that being said, I will go back again. Next time I'll be prepared to hike up the canyon after I get up to where the creek comes into it. I'll go early in the morning on a weekday, thereby avoiding some of the crowds. After school starts there should be an improvement on weekdays as well.

One of the best photos I've ever taken was here, but not in the canyon area, but down in the lake area near the dam. I call it "Floating on the Clouds." Check it out! It's the last photo.

My second visit to Clear Creek Reservoir. Unique kayaking and climbing destination. The views are truly special and on this day the water was like glass. The low sun and stillness in the air created the most mirror-like reflections I've ever photographed.

There are some challenging climbing routes about 3 miles upstream. I have a lot of respect for the abilities of the experienced climbers who really know what they are doing. After an evening and morning of working on a tough sport route we were able to make our way only about 2/3's up the wall before moving on.

We found another big wall where we used ascenders to climb a rope someone had left behind. I'm less trusting of other people's gear than Dean, so he volunteered to take the lead. With Dean safely up on a small ledge 75 feet above, I made my ascent. Once atop the ledge we scrambled up to the top of the canyon for a look around. After a few pics, we went back to the anchor point and set up the 75 foot rappel.

Once back on the water, a mild tailwind provided some assistance for the kayak out.

No climbing, kayaking or fishing for me. I bookended a backpacking trip into the Painted Desert by car camping at McHood Park for two nights. It's free to camp here, as opposed to $18 at nearby Homolovi State Park. Don't get me wrong, Homolovi is a great cultural park and I've camped there before, but $18 to pitch a tent is a bit much. Besides, dusk at McHood is a great time of day, especially when the purple sky reflects off the water.

As a side note, I had lunch at The Turquoise Room while in Winslow. Lamb posole and prickly pear bread pudding served by a sweet Native American girl with feathers in her hair. It's the best Southwest-influenced meal I've had in a long time. I'm already looking for excuses to return to that part of the state.

After two consecutive days of hiking the Salome Jug, followed by the epic "Mother Lode" trek across the 4 Peaks, Dean and I were ready for something a bit more relaxing. Exhausted from the day before, we weren't looking to get on the water too early. We drove up to Winslow from Pine and ended up launching the boats after 9am. We shared the area with other kayakers, fisherman from boats and shore, rafters, climbers and others just out enjoying a day on the cool water.

Right away the walls of ECC begin to rise over the water and we began searching for dws (deep water solo) climbing routes and high places to jump. Our muscles were still sore from yesterday's adventure, but not so much that we couldn't enjoy a little bit of pocket-pulling fun.

We came to a couple of areas that required portage of the boats. Most paddlers don't seem to make it this far in. This made the trip all the more interesting as we now only shared this deeper south section with a few rock climbers. The creek also became more interesting with cool waterfalls and lush green plants and trees, and taller, narrower canyon walls. We spent a full day on the water, returning to the boat launch at McHood Park around 7pm.

Afterwards, we carelessly stumbled into Alfonso's Mexican food restaurant in Winslow. The way I inhaled my food would make an onlooker think the meal was fantastic, but it was really just "okay."

Summer Kayaking At It's Best...

This was my first trip to Clear Creek Reservoir and most certainly not my last. Wow! It almost has a Lake Powell feel to it. I had so much fun on this trip. I wish it wasn't so far away from my house. Basically everyone on the lake was in either a canoe or kayak. I have never been around such a large community of fellow paddlers. Everyone was so friendly. I was the obvious outsider in what appeared to be a weekly event of paddling, swimming, and cliff diving for locals throughout the area. I don't think the air temperature broke 95 all day and the water felt like about 75. Those two numbers equate to perfect summer kayaking for me.

As described in Tyler Williams Canyoneering Arizona book, there is a 4th class, no-rope-required entry/exit point about a half mile downstream of the rappel entry point given in the route description. At the current water levels, this actually drops you into the canyon in Clear Creek Reservoir, with a few hundred yards to swim upstream before you reach walkable ground, but its well worth the extra effort. Paddling up from the reservoir is also a nice option. In either case, head upstream as far as you wish, swimming, wading and hiking along this exquisite corridor. The hardest part will be deciding when you finally have to turn around.
