Got to the West Wing parking lot just after 7am. There’s parking for about 20 vehicles, which would seem like enough, but with the added trails at Sunrise, the fact that this is the parking lot for West Wing trails and that this is the parking area for park users, this lot can fill up fast on the weekends. (There is additional parking around the building to the west). Sunrise has never been one of my favorite trails. Primarily because there is only one entry point and you have to go through homes and schools to get “into” the trail. There have been several new builds that hug the trail since my last visit. At the rate they are going, you’ll be hiking through someone’s kitchen before you know it.
I did my usual hike, hitting the two high points before seeing what was new with the trail system. After hitting what has been dubbed East Vista Summit….these’s a flag hanging forlornly on top, I wrapped around the east side is this peak and then took a new trail called Miner’s Shaft Pass down to to the lower valley. At the bottom I hopped on another trail called Miner’s Ruin and took that around the south and west side side of one of the mountains. This eventually tied into the old trail system which I used to get back to the TH. Overall it was a nice hike, but it was frustrating for a couple of reasons.
First of all, let me say, that the trail designs that have been added to this system have been done very nicely. I enjoyed all the new builds. The elevation change on all the new trails that I did are ideal for bikers and runners and are practically rock free. However, the signage that has been added for these new trails is about as poor a job as I ever seen. A few posts were place in odd spots and the the signs on almost all of the posts had me scratching my head. Many times I was honestly left wondering what trail I was on immediately after passing a signed post. Very frustrating. Also, as a side note, the trail board at the TH has not been updated and does not show any of the new trails or new trail names. I pity the person who tries to do trail descriptions for these trails with the provided signage. |
