Two 14er’s, one hike today. Met Jeff and Donna in Salida on Tuesday evening, we had a wonderful dinner at Ferraro’s Italian restaurant, then walked over to The Tres Litros Brewery a few blocks away for some local beers.
Returned to our rooms around 8, early start in the morning. Joel and Shelly drove in from Crestone to meet at the trail head for the predetermined 0600 start. Like Arizona it’s been hot and dry in Colorado, not a bad thing for doing high peaks. Summited Mt Shavano around 0900, then started (ugh) down the connector trail to Tabeguache, the up trail to the peak.
Returning the way we approached. So up down, up, down up, just to bag the second peak.

After returning to Shavano we did get some light hail, the winds were around 40 Mph when we were on the saddle; strong enough to move us around.
Everyone agreed this was a DNR.

It was a bit confusing to see groups on approach around noon and one PM.

Nice butt kicker of a hike to knock off these two 14ers. Great to have an AZ reunion in Colorado.

This was my last 14er I did along the Colorado Trail. After Mt. Yale, I covered just under 30 miles of backpacking to reach the turn-off trail for Mt. Shavano where I camped for an early morning summit the following day. The plan was to bag Shavano and then knock out its neighboring 14er Tabegauache Peak.

I got another very early start and woke up around 0330. I broke camp, hung my gear and then headed for the two 14ers. The trail through the treeline was a little more rugged than the other 14ers I had did and the first few miles were a bit of a slog with roots, ankle breaker rocks and low light to contend with. Nevertheless, I managed to reach the treeline around some of the best parts of the morning. I know I have gone on record in the past with this, but I will say it again, "there really is no better place to be in the world than a mountain side somewhere during first light." Naturally, I feel this experience is enhanced even more at the higher elevations. Its hard to explain, but this is really my zen moment. The eerie calm, watching the lower elevations wake-up, the birds chirping and the contrast the new day's lights and shadows cast over the mountain all contribute to an amazing experience and I would highly recommend it.

The trail up Shavano really becomes amazing after the treeline. One can immediately see the high saddle that marks the final push to Shavano and the surrounding high country views only get better as one makes their way to the flower dominated tundra and saddle area. Along the way, I ran into easily the largest herd of bighorns I had ever seen. They all seemed to be babies and maybe I misidentified them, but there were easily a couple dozen sheep, or goats grazing the tundra, as I made my way up.

After reaching the saddle, its a pretty good scramble up to the peak, but nothing unmanageable. As far as I know, I only shared the mountain with one other person that Monday morning and this only further enhanced my experience. Between the views and the stunning saddle area, I would have no problem placing this 14er above nearly all of the nine 14ers I completed while in Colorado. Immediately after reaching the summit, I started scouting my route to Tabegauche. However, something crossed my mind. Why not enjoy this summit a little? My legs and body were fatigued, the views were amazing and I still needed to finish the rest of the segment anyways. Therefore, instead of pushing ahead which is usually the case with me, I sat in one place and simply enjoyed perhaps the best conditions I have endured on a 14er, along with some of the best views. A Great choice! Tabegauche was not going anywhere and on this day discretion would be the better part of valor.

I ran into a few people coming down, but the hike was generally uneventful and fast, as is the case with most 14er descents. Upon reaching camp, it was a quick snack, a transition back to the heavy pack and back on the Colorado Trail, next stop U.S. 50.

Spent the night at the trailhead listening to elk(?) noises from multiple directions. Got up at 4 to beat the weather and ended up on the trail at 4:40. Initially it was dark, I was exhausted, and the Colorado trail was a swamp. The Shavano trail starts gaining ground quickly, and after sunrise I was going good (and hydrating a lot). Treeline was great- lots of clouds for 6 am, but nothing threatening. The final leg up to the shoulder of Shavano was quite steep, and I needed a big breather once I got there. The final push up to the summit was also steep, but not bad enough to necessitate any breaks.

The unexpected tricky part of the hike was the long bouldery ridge leading down from the top of Shavano to the Shav/Tab saddle. After a pretty easy boulder-hop around snowfields up to Tabeguache, I had to climb back up this ridge (contouring Shavano to get back to the original trail is reportedly a bad idea).

I left the Shavano summit for the second time just before 10am, just as there was graupel coming down and the clouds were getting big. I passed some people and told them I wasn't sure about the weather- no storms yet, but snowing and a little too cloudy. I made it down to treeline at 11, just in time for a pretty bad thunderstorm. Even after the storm had started there were still people going up... I don't know what they were thinking. I made it back to the trailhead a little after noon, drenched but feeling pretty good for that much gain at that altitude.

Very substantial 14ner. TH is several miles in from US 50 (6.5 mi on dirt), but I'll try to link a track for the was in. Not too difficult for vehicle with normal clearance and 2WD, but bumpy nearly all the way. Lot of time above the tree line so watch for storm clouds. Not a lot of scree or boulders but some near the top. Fantastic views from the tree line up.

Flowers are a few weeks behind last year in this part of Colorado. The late snow? Some very good fields between the tree line and the ridge.

Shavano and Tabeguache, great area! Racing the weather- got a few sprinkles, and light hail, but below treeline before lightning started.

This triplog links to the 8/22/12 Mount Shavano/Mount Shavano Lake loop hike for which I posted a gps track. The hike goes part way up the trail to Mt. Shavano but veers off to bushwhack to Shavano Lake and returns down the ravine to the Continental Divide trail. Good hike but be prepared for some major obstacles down the ravine in the form of downed trees. It seems that last winter, a stong wind gust from the west nearly flattened all the trees. The original trail and rock cairns can be seen along the way at a few points but it is impossible to follow the trail. Take your gps and just keep heading east down the ravine till you intersect the main trail.

Mount Shavano is 14,229 feet above sea level and this was the target today. Simple enough - just do 4.5 miles and 4,500 feet of elevation and you are there.

It was raining and foggy at the start and there were plenty of cars at the TH that got started before us. I have seen a lot of Colorado weather in July and August and in the 7 years I have visited there I have never seen an all day rain. Weather systems move through there fairly rapidly. So we ventured on in the early morning rain and fog. As the day went on several of the early starters passed us coming back without reaching the summit complaining about wind, rain, snow and hail at higher elevations. Did that deter us? Hell no, we are HAZ hikers after all.

Bottom line is we were rewarded greatly for our later start and our perseverance. The strange weather system eventually put us in clear weather at the summit about 1,000 feet or so above the clouds. Now that is a trip. We got to take pictures from above the clouds. I love it.
