Happened upon these as we were looking for a place to eat lunch and let the dogs run after picking veggies at Apple Annies in Willcox. So unexpected that I didn't even bring a camera. Too bad, too, because the quarries are something of a site for sure!

The plan was to hike to Baylor Peak in the Organ Mountains near Las Cruces. But, due to a fire, the trail had been closed. When I saw the Dragoon exit from I-10 I thought there must be a place to hike nearby. After driving through the town of Dragoon, the only place that I could see that goes towards the mountains very far is Lizard Lane. I could only go up about a mile in my low clearance 2 wheel drive. I parked and started hiking up fr 4216 & 4212, which branch off south of Lizard Lane. Once the road ended, I decided to bushwack up to the ridgeline between the roads and follow it up. I made it up most of the way to the top of the small peak, but turned around at that point because I didn't want to take any more risk since nobody knew where I was. Saw different mining sites on the way up and down. Found out after I got home that Preston had written a hike description for the area.

Had a nice little hike and exploration at lunch. The marble quarries might be worth a visit if you are in the area...

As part of a meandering SE AZ drive, a buddy of mine suggested we check this place out as a way to strech our legs during a protracted tour of Cochise county backroads...
