This was the last hike on my list in the Queen Valley area. I walked in from the golf course up Elephant Butte Road. Looking at the map I thought for certain I could access the butte from the east and stay off private property. My misunderstanding; the butte actually is private property. Bummer! There's no way around it. Mining equipment and evidence of digging can clearly be seen at the base of the poor elephant's head. I hate to be negative, but it looks like we've lost this area. :(
