Same start as the day before, but we turned north up Salome Creek. The nice open slick rock (that area I first encountered it was just a nice spot) gave way to an overgrown (if gentle bashing) creekbed that opened up into a few nice spots.

While neither Cataract or Indian Camp Canyon have any bucket list features, I really enjoyed them both - ICC had a lot of nice pillars, and all the pines in Cataract gave it a nice vibe (mountain forest up high, SW slickrock down low). Both were easy to navigate which was appreciated. It'd be fun to come back when they were flowing as there would be a lot of charming cascades with little to no navigation issues.

Cows don't like rock, I imagine their hooves don't get great traction on it (I've seen a deer move well on talus, but it didn't seem like it was having a lot of fun). A lot more signs of them up near the top of cataract and on large raised benches near exits on the creeks than the visually nicer sections, though a dropping could be found nearly anywhere.

Scouted out a cut from ICC once it petered out and had a surprisingly pleasant wiggle of ledges, drainages, and open pasture up to FR 486. After some hemming and hawing we decided to wiggle over onto Redman Mesa, which had a nice very "western" vibe. After seeing some cows in the distance admiring the same tall flowering Yucca we had passed by earlier, we got some views down into Turkey Creek then went down a cairned trail. Well started going down it, then went on a cow track, and then just winged it. Turned out fine, and dropped out only a 7 minute walk to camp!

Not the earliest start as the lows in that drainage were well below forecasts (cold air sinks), which was expected, but not quite it being 24 instead of 37.

Dropped off of FR 2747 at 33.92018, -111.04061 and wiggled our way down to Salome Creek via hoof paths and open pasture to Salome Creek and proceeded downstream.

JR Canyon really caught my eye last year, but we didn't have time to poke up it before. The lower stretch was great, but odd to see it go from strong cascades to small pools - though the contrast was IMO more interesting than just going from really heavy flow to a less interesting one. :) It got a little less interesting after a bit, then picked up to nice slickrock again. Right around the private property boundary it got overgrown, so great timing! Got some nice reflections off of pools in here, and had fun sliding across one well frozen pool.

From here we went down Salome Creek - really nice open slickrock (similar to the confluence area around Little Turkey) extended on for a while, then we got down to some nice rolly granite. Shortly after turning the corner my Radiacode 103 started chirping - this continued on and off for most of this section. Mostly just count alarms (hey there's something to look at!), but it wasn't uncommon for the dose to be a few times higher than background radiation, and one (very visually striking section) it hit over 1µSv. Not terrible to pass by, but I'd not camp on granite in this area! In between the short rolly bits it was fairly overgrown and bouldery, but not too bad. More tedious than challenging. This was the only section the entire trip that triggered an alarm from it.

We were nearing the creek dropping from Thoroughbred and had to do a high bypass - the section looked fairly rough and given short days we just decided to do a more direct XC cut back to FR 7250 / the nearby tank. It was pretty smooth, mostly open pasture terrain and a few clumps of mostly open forest. We hit the old cleared / limbed trail (now cow maintained) below the tank and then road walked back to camp. Next year we could drop down thoroughbred and check out the rest of Salome until it hits the rapps, or poke up Park from there or something. :)

Sierra Ancha Creek Bagging Day 3 of 4 - Park Creek Canyon

We debated heading over to see more of Upper Salome & JR via Cataract, but figured we'd have enough near home to keep us occupied. After following the road back out for a few minutes there was an easy drop to the rolling bedrock above the upper falls of park canyon. We enjoyed this from above and on the side, then saw a likely place to bypass on the south which worked out fine ~33.90502, -111.01733. This was probably easier just plunge stepping into powder, but should be fine dry. Looking at Salome Creek - Upper Loop you can bypass on the north side as well. We explored this middle ground area and really wanted to get a look at the lower falls, but figured we could do that in the evening.

We exited then followed FR 2747 to the junction with FR 2750 to Thoroughbred tank. From the tank we found a cow path heading where we were interested in going, and were puzzled by limbed trees. These continued past the crossing of thoroughbred creek up to a pasture, where the cows went their own way but arrows carved into a tree pointed the way to what I had assumed was a drainage on topo. Following cut limbs we dropped down to Park Creek, marveling at the time someone put into this horse path many many decades ago. Shortly upstream was what we dubbed Crescent Falls (flowing more dramatically than in [ photo ] , it's odd seeing spots we named as went along either dry or trickles in previous trip reports). This area is ROUGH with high water. We wanted to stay dry and weren't geared for hiking up water, but with the current and lack of visibility that wouldn't be a great option. We went up to the next cascade, which was an interesting problem, then up into the brush - and came across what was well over a dozen old barrel hoops in an overgrown clearing. wtf? pushed on a bit further, and higher, then gave up. Another come back when it's drier thing perhaps. Took some cow paths down just above Crescent, poked our head into the salmon and grey colored side creek feeding into it, and dropped downstream to a nice grey cascade and called it a day. Had second lunch and exited back to camp with more than an hour before sunset and happened to find ourselves at exactly this spot and enjoyed the falls we saw from above that morning for quite a while before heading back to camp.

Did this as an overnight. an interesting trip. Somehow ended up with a newbie on this trip. Not just a canyoneering newbie, but a rock hopping newbie, a swimming with pack newbie, and perhaps a backpacking newbie as well. It felt like a guided trip at times with said person really having no clue about almost everything we did. I would think it would be pretty obvious from reading at least a basic description of this trip that this is a pretty burly trip.
Started at the Reynolds TH and decided to walk the loop instead of shuttle. after a couple of hours got to Park canyon and the first rap. Started to realize what we were in for when we realized that someone on the trip had almost no rapelling experience and had never rapped with a pack on. After a very long first rap(time wise) we continued rock hopping down stream, with me and a few other stopping and waiting for a while after getting pretty far ahead. Got to the beautiful arch rap in Park and suited up for the awesome sequence. Rapped 60ft or so into a pool and then rapped another feet to the floor and the junction with Salome. At this point it was 2:45 and the clock was ticking since we planned on camping above the climb in Workman. Did the 1+ mile slog down Salome to the narrows. Waited for what felt like an hour. Our passenger had rolled an ankle and needed help with the pack. So the swims, downclimbs etc became an extra challenge. The narrows were spectacular though with a fun simul-rap and a gorgeous waterfall rap and some loooong swims. I was hoping to do this section earlier in the day with maybe some sun, but alas. It also became clear that this person had no experience swimming with a pack. Luckily he was a good swimmer but he made the long swims look awkward and painful. Finally got to the Workman junction and it was 6:30. Had a discussion on whether to bivy there with some poor campsites or continue on. My friend who did it before thought there might be good campsites 10-15 min up workman before the climb. So we decided to continue. We had to get wet again with one short swim. I went ahead to scout the climb to see if we could get up it before dark since there were supposed to be good campsites above the falls. Once i got to the falls is was already pretty dark so I searched for the climb with my headlamp. We all decided to bivy there since we were all tired and it was hard to eval the climb in the dark. Camping was pretty bad. Very rocky and not flat. I actually managed to sleep fairly well. In the morning scouted the climb and it didn't look too bad. I led it and setup a top rope anchor - had two people who wanted a belay. The others just used the rope as a handline. Got everyone up and kept slogging up Workman creek. Finally hit the trail and Shelley and I took off - we had plans to do another canyon before driving home. Great canyon and fun trip - but I'm still a bit annoyed. Take away - don't assume that someone you think would have good judgement about who to bring on a trip will actually have good judgement.

Upper Salome has a bit of a reputation for having an unfavorable reward-to-effort ratio. Turns out that the rumors were true, but I'm still glad to have experienced this amazingly beautiful place. Our route was Park Creek > Salome Creek > Workman Creek, with dirtbag camping at Hell's Hole and a car shuttle to cut off a few miles on the approach. I give major props to anyone who does this in one day as it is a pretty tough hike!

By far the best part about this trip was the granite arch room and the grotto section, both of which included rappels, swimming, slides, jumps and more slides. Similar to the Jug (same creek, much higher up from the jug), but even more spectacular. The walls here were smooth and rounded with stripes of moss, algae and minerals running down them. Almost unreal how beautiful it is there, but the good stuff is over much too fast.

The beta described the rock-hopping as "obnoxious" for this canyon, but I think "hellish" is a more apt description. Especially the section up workman creek with the flowing water, slippery rocks, mud bogs and abundant poison ivy. We roped up for the waterfall bypass, it's got one semi-sketchy move that would end badly if you were to fall. The boulder hopping stretches on and on; jumping around between rocks for miles (in wetsuits) with wet heavy packs (canyoneering gear + overnight gear) really does a number on your legs and your morale. Eventually we made it to camp at Hell's Hole where were finally able to get some much-deserved relaxation in, and we were up early to continue the hike out the next morning.

Definitely an experience I'll never forget. Despite how astoundingly special that grotto section is, this is a solid one-and-done! I'm putting that in writing because I tend to get adventure amnesia about the unpleasant parts of a trip, especially when I look at photos and remember how amazing the good parts were. :D

Awesome canyoneeer route in the Sierra Anchas. The first half is just some normal hiking and the canyon is scenic, but nothing spetacular. Second half of the canyon is awesome. Some nice rappels and pools to swim through. Hike out was fun. Good mix of flowing creek, elevation and some trees.

With the Anchas flowing good and this weekend opening up, this seemed like the perfect canyon to hit this weekend. :y: My buddy worked the graveyard shift, hence the late start and camping just above the lower narrows of Park Creek. I was hurting also from a cold so a halfday that first day worked out good for both of us. The hike to upper Park Canyon isn't that bad and goes by fast plus it's so sweet to see the first waterfall section after all that work to reach it. :D We did a few of the rappels that Saturday afternoon before retiring for the night on some flat creekside red quartzite. Sunday was the bulk of the canyon loop for us and we were all suited up for the lower wet Park Canyon with it's pools and slickrock. I elected to do the 40ft slide while by buddies rappelled it. From that sweet pool room we did another 50ft rappel under the arch to reach the rocky creekbed of upper Salome Creek. Mucho rock hopping, creek wading, and light bushwhacking is required to reach the Grotto section but it is SO worth it. :y: The upper part of those narrows involved some small slides and sweet jumps into the Grotto Pool itself. More boulder climbing thru the narrows to reach the simul-rappel spot with a swim under a boulder bridge. :GB: We were kinna miffed to find some food trash down in this section??? Who hiked cans and large plastic bags in here? :x Careless hikers or hunters or maybe it washed down from above? I picked some of it up and moved it away from the pool, but it was too much trash and too far yet to go for us to haul it out... Another waterfall rappel, a few more pools, a nice jump, and a few more slides and we were at the confluence with Workman Creek and dropping gear. The hike up Workman is a bit of a challenge esp to get up out of the creek and bushwhack past that 50ft falls but it certainy is a sweet falls. Some more creek hiking and we're on the trail proper and hiking up the steep Hell's Hole trail. I was still dragging rear from my cold so it was SO nice to hit some flatish trail up on top yet we still had a few miles to go to reach the TH. Such an amAZing canyon loop but you def have to EARN this one. : rambo :

Woohoo! Finally was able to complete this amAZingly remote & rugged canyon loop in the Sierra Anchas. :y:

On Saturday afternoon, we started from the Reynolds TH and made our way northwest along the McFadden trail and old ranching roads to upper Park Creek Canyon. We slowly rock hopped our way down canyon and eventually hit some drops in middle Park Canyon. The first drop we bypassed on the right but the next we harnessed up and made a 40ft rappel from a tree on the leftside. As the sun was slowly setting, we found a flat section of red rock along the creek to setup our meager camp for the night. With minimal gear, I slept the night on a groundcover, my wetsuit as a bed pad, a blowup pillow, and a small summer bag that fits in my canyon dry keg. It was a warm day, but it still got rather cold at night and I was shivering fairly good the last few hours before sunrise. :o We built a fire the next morning to quickly warm us back up before hitting the canyon again bright & early at 7am... We passed some cool slickrock sections before hitting another 40ft rappel at a falls but we were still able to stay dry. Further down canyon, a hallway section is encountered but with some climbing skills we were still able to stay dry. :) Eventually we reached lower Park Canyon as it narrows up and drops quickly to Upper Salome Canyon with a quick two drops. We suited up, navigated thru some pools, and I volunteered to rappel 60ft down a chute into a deep punchbowl with a cool arch above it. :D The pool was plenty deep, so I yelled back to my partners and told them it was deep enough for them to waterslide it and they both were crazy enough to slide it. :o From this pool, there was an opening to rappel another 50ft waterfall down into a boulder field and finally reach the confluence...

So this is known as an Upper Salome Loop, but in reality we only hike about a mile in this canyon but it's all about hitting the amAZing Grotto Pool. We slowly rock hopped our way down canyon until it finally narrowed up into some of the sweetest narrows I've seen in central AZ. Falls after falls and pool after pool until we reach the magnificent Grotto Pool that was featured in AZ highways way back in August of 2001. We both jumped and slide into it and it was such a sweet warm pool to swim and briefly hang at before unfortunately having to move on. The narrows were only half over and the falls & slide just got bigger. On the first one, I performed my first simal-rappel as we counter weighted ourself around a mound of rock into the pool below, swam below a boulder bridge, and out of the long pool on the farside. Some down climbing and we reached the final 30ft falls that was rocking with water flow into another pool. :o Another jump into another pool and another slide into a final pool and we reached our exit canyon up lower Workman Creek. We dropped the wet gear and made our way out of paradise and towards Hell's Hole. ;) There's a 45ft falls down there required us to bushwhack up a chute on the leftside LUC and traverse above the creek to get passed the falls. After a mile or so of rock hopping and walking a side trail above Hell's Hole, I started to take what I though was the trail up and out of the canyon. Turns out that while I was very close to the trail, it was actually one more ridge over to the east as we slowly made our own bushwhacking route up game trails & clearings. After much energy expended and frustrations, the trail crossed back above us and we found ourselves on a great trail and only a half hour until sunset with about 5 trail miles left to hike out. Thankfully we made great time on the trail and arrived back at the TH around 8pm to finish up my longest canyon trip yet to date. :GB:
