I don't usually put Yuma on my map -- at all. And certainly not in August.

But Hilary was moister than an oyster so I decided to take a dip.

This was slated to be an easy afternoon loop. It was 75 and raining. Quite a lovely August day actually. My first checkbox in this, the crown of America's wilderness system (tough to argue it's also the jewel. Without Klothos, it wouldn't be a crown either).

I was gonna go ccw, but the kiosk seemed to direct hikers cw, so that's what I did. I immediately got off track following a well-worn, and very-well-cairned route heading to the west. I fixed that quick enough!

This is desolate wilderness (but about 400 standard deviations below the beauty of Desolation Wilderness). The rock is black and would be hot even on a sunny day in December. A rainy day here is perfect.

Can't say I'll be back on the loop. But the peaks look worthwhile for another visit.

This is my backyard hike so to speak. This is the only official trail but this little wilderness area is riddled with old trails from Indians,Mexicans, prospectors, ranchers and so on.I spent a lot of time here last winter and rarely saw anyone.I have packed in overnight a few times but you can't go too far in any one direction because on the north of Klothos Temple is Gov.(I think you can get a permit) and to the east past Morgan wash are just low barren rolling hills. Still it has a lot to offer for this area. I've seen small bands of desert big horns three times, I jumped a fox out early one morning and got some fuzzy pics of him and you've always got to watch for snakes. Once I came upon the lower fore leg of a deer that wasn't that old (cougars are known to visit too). That picked up my heart rate a little. There's a water catchment way back up in a high place for the sheep someone built but basically there's no water. I took a half gallon for this little loop in decent temps but I often take gallon or more. it was like visiting a friend,a great day.

I love the paths on this trail, next time I go I have to climb something out there. I will be back to this place.

Nice loop with good views from the upper saddle. Evidence of old mining in the area.
